Almost a decade ago, Fairy Tail, by Hiro Mashima, was one of the most prominent shonen series around. This hit series by the famed mangaka is still incredibly popular today and has done more than well to stand the test of time, largely thanks to incredible writing and a loyal fanbase. The world of Fairy Tail is filled with fantasy to the brim, but what makes it so endearing is its cast of exciting characters. Among these characters, the two most important ones are Natsu and Lucy, who could be considered the leads around whom the story revolves.
Natsu and Lucy have fought together under the Fairy Tail Guild for a while now. While fans always believed them to be romantically into each other since the conclusion of the original manga 9 years ago, Hiro Mashima has now officially confirmed that their relationship goes beyond being simply friends in Fairy Tail.
New Hiro Mashima Comments Confirm That Natsu And Lucy Have Feelings For Each Other
In northern France, the Amiens Comics Festival is a massive event that is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. This year’s event, which is taking place between June 6 and June 21, 2026, is especially exciting as it features one of the biggest faces of 2000s Shonen manga, Hiro Mashima. As many of us know, Hiro Mashima is the creator of Fairy Tail, the manga for which ran from August 2006 to July 2017 in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine. Despite the series having ended years ago, the hype is still there, and as such, an interview with this iconic Mangaka was highly anticipated at this event.
In this convention, Hiro Mashima was asked a question that many fans of Fairy Tail have been wondering about for years: Are Natsu and Lucy more than just friends, and do they have actual romantic feelings for each other?
Hiro Mashima didn’t avoid the question, unlike most authors, and he quite clearly stated that the two are definitely more than just friends. This answer might feel lackluster, but with everything else revealed by the mangaka and all extra content that points to them being a canon couple, it feels like a no-brainer at this point.
Q: Do Natsu & Lucy have feelings for each other?
Hiro Mashima (Author): Though it is not directly said in the manga, Natsu and Lucy have feelings that are more than just friends.

Why Natsu and Lucy Could Finally End Up Together In The New Fairy Tail Serialization
When Fairy Tail was in its final arc, many fans anticipated that the story would finally set up the endgame couples, which would include Natsu and Lucy, ending up together. Sadly, that never happened, and at the time, it was quite a surprising move by the author. That said, this decision didn't mean that Hiro Mashima would never make them canon in Fairy Tail. Currently, Fairy Tail: 100 Year Quest is still actively ongoing, and in it, the relationship between Natsu and Lucy could be further developed later down the line. By the end of the 100 Year Quest, the two could finally be a canon couple, and maybe even end up married.
In the past, Hiro Mashima has even illustrated what the possible children of the two would look like. It’s unlikely to see him end the sequel in a vague manner when it comes to this couple. With the new information at hand, it is more than likely for them to officially end up together at some point later down the line. Furthermore, with newer projects on the way, more is expected from this couple later this year.

Fairy Tail is Returning With Re:Fantasia and Continuing with 100 Year Quest
Fairy Tail: 100 Year Quest has been in serialization for years now, but this franchise is expanding things even further later this year. For the 20th anniversary of the series, it was revealed that the Fairy Tail manga will make a comeback, illustrated and written by Hiro Mashima. This new manga serialization is titled “Fairy Tail Re:Fantasia,” and it will be released on July 29, 2026, in Issue #35 of Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine. This is exciting, and while we still don’t know what this new manga could be covering, hints imply that it’s about Laxus. Fans are still hoping to see Natsu and Lucy together in the short serialization, and Hiro Mashima could potentially build towards that in this story.
Of course, other characters will be featured as well, but it’s unlikely for it to be solely a romance-based spin-off. Nevertheless, the return of Fairy Tail is highly anticipated and could lead to more projects in the future, including more spin-offs, as Hiro Mashima is always excited to return to his first hit work.
