PlayStation Plus Extra is designed to be an all-encompassing subscription service that can satisfy pretty much any sort of need. Obviously, that includes humanity's natural instinct to connect with others; basically, there are plenty of PS Plus games with online co-op. These titles aren't particularly easy to find by just browsing the PS Store, and it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what options exist. Consequently, let's try to simplify that.

While covering the best co-op games on PS Plus, the article is intended to provide an overview of the service's library. Every group has its preference in genre, playstyle, or challenge, and each one of them should be able to find something for them on PS Plus.

Last Update: May 20, 2026

  • Added Granblue Fantasy: Relink and Risk of Rain 2
  • Removed The Dark Pictures as the games were removed.

Quick Picks: Best PS Plus Online Co-Op Games To Play Right Now

While we will dive into the individual games in a moment, let's first take some time to put together a selection of quick recommendations.

Category

Top Pick

Why?

Best Overall Online Co-Op

Abiotic Factor

An all-around addictive game that is tailor-made for co-op. It balances action, survival, and relaxing moments incredibly well, creating a complete experience with very few peers.

Best for Casual Co-Op (Low Stress, Easy to Jump Into)

Cat Quest 2 (& 3)

A short but purrfect action RPG that is simple but not too easy.

Best for Hardcore / Long-Term Co-Op

Insurgency: Sandstorm

Tactical shooters always come with a learning curve, especially when they revolve around PvP. Insurgency: Sandstorm is no exception, but it also has co-op modes that pit your team against AI enemies.

Best Co-Op for Two Players

Returnal

Another pretty tough game, Returnal is a fairly difficult roguelite and third-person shooter. Co-op works surprisingly well, and it is nice to have a partner along for the ride.

Best Co-Op with Friends (3 Players)

Space Marine 2

3 players can either serve the Emperor in an awesome campaign or jump into Operations and Siege.

Games that only support online co-op will be prioritized since local co-op titles are highlighted in a separate article. That said, a few exceptions that support both local and online co-op will be included.

Also, while quality matters, games are ranked by other factors as well. For instance, recent additions to PS Plus will be highlighted first.

The big new PS Plus Extra game of March 2026, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, is a huge addition in various ways, but it is a particularly exciting arrival for the online co-op scene. Putting aside the other modes for the moment, Saber's gore-tastic third-person shooter features a campaign that allows for 3 players, although it only supports online co-op. At roughly 10 hours, the story mode isn't extremely long by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a reasonable length that can keep a group of players entertained for a couple of days. Epic in scale and vicious in combat, the campaign is (mostly) everything it needs to be, and the gameplay is fun enough to perhaps justify more than one playthrough.

Warhammer 40K: Strongest Space Marine Chapters

Warhammer 40K has featured a number of space marine chapters, but among them, which are the most powerful?

Space Marine 2's real longevity comes from its online options, including two modes that are largely designed around co-op: Operations and Siege. These are both PvE and are designed for repeat playthroughs, with Operations coming with a progression system that allows you to develop your Marine. While Siege is a basic-ish horde mode that simply pushes the gameplay to the forefront (a wise decision), Operations is a touch more story-driven, although it still takes a combat-first approach. Heck, even the PvP Eternal War mode has an element of co-op since teamwork is required and not just recommended.

The Lord of the Rings is one of the most storied franchises of all time, and its gaming chapter is far from an exception. Over the last three decades, roughly a billion games have been set in Middle-earth, most of which fall under the action RPG or adventure genres. Return to Moria opts for a different angle, shifting towards survival and crafting. Considering the story revolves around dwarves, the gameplay style makes complete sense for the characters, and it is also interesting to visit this world after Sauron's demise.

Return to Moria is somewhat forgotten nowadays, partially thanks to an uneven launch and an overabundance of survival games; however, if you are into LOTR and don't mind this genre, this title is arguably one of the best of the last decade. The single-player is solid, but co-op is (unsurprisingly) more fun. Although the scaling of resources for multiplayer could be better optimized, co-op captures that "fellowship" element synonymous with LOTR, all the while making the grind a bit more manageable. Return to Moria is quite long, and it helps to have dwarves with specialized roles.

Return to Moria is still quite active, too, with the "Durin's Folk" expansion dropping on November 18, 2025. This isn't part of the base game on PS Plus, though.

Coming and going as it pleases, Grand Theft Auto 5 returned to PS Plus Extra just a few months after it was removed. On the one hand, this makes it slightly difficult to get into the game's online portion, out of fear that it might leave quicker than other PS Plus games. Conversely, GTA is always a big deal, and repeat arrivals do not dull its appeal.

Best-4-Player-Co-Op-Games
24 Best 4-Player Co-Op Games

There are countless 4-player co-op games available for gamers to check out. These, however, are easily among the best.

If you are solely into the single-player side of things, GTA Online might be, in your own opinion, the worst thing to happen to the franchise; however, if you are part of the ecosystem that makes up Rockstar's eternal sandbox, then you have a game that has been going strong for more than a decade. Even with GTA 6 on the horizon, it does not seem like GTA Online will be going away anytime soon.

You can mostly play this mode in whatever way you prefer, and it is up to you whether you engage actively with other players. If you do go down that route, GTA Online has a plethora of co-op missions and heists that will keep you busy and make you rich in the process. It goes without saying, but GTA Online is more fun with a crew.

A Great Single-Player Campaign Followed By An Even Better Endgame

I love Granblue Fantasy: Relink. Seriously, it is one of my favorite JRPGs of the 2020s, and I would recommend it to anybody who is looking for a game with fantastic hack-and-slash combat. Think Tales, but somehow better. Now, the main story has to be completed solo, so you will only be able to use online co-op to do side quests for the first 15 hours you spend with the game; however, after that, the endgame content fully supports 4-player online co-op. On the highest difficulties, barreling forward with AI partners who only periodically help out can be frustrating, and replacing them with humans makes a massive difference.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink's brilliance lies in its massive roster of playable characters who need to be unlocked, all of whom are unique enough to require learning them individually. You have ranged fighters, slow tanks, and characters with really absurd movesets. All of it is great, and creating a complementary party is satisfying. The endgame is definitely a grind, but that's part of the fun, similar to the Monster Hunter games.

Tactical shooters live and die on the success of their competitive modes, which usually involve a degree of cooperation since they often divide players into teams. However, Insurgency: Sandstorm goes the extra mile by having multiple modes dedicated to PvE co-op, and they are not an afterthought. Not only are the modes fairly diverse from each other, but they are arguably more popular than their PvP counterparts, although you should be able to find matches in the latter without too much issue.

Compared to a few other co-op FPS games, Insurgency: Sandstorm is slightly more niche and challenging, which extends to the AI enemies faced in the PvE modes. Consequently, it might take you a couple of hours to really come to grips with the gameplay's flow, but once you and your friends grow comfortable, modes like Checkpoint and Survival can be incredibly addictive.

PS Plus Extra's April 2026 lineup is well-rounded, but maybe not the most exciting of the year so far. Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is arguably the month's biggest game, even if the excitement of its arrival was somewhat dampened by the knowledge that the older version used to be on PS Plus but was removed. In terms of completely new games, The Crew Motorfest is the standout arrival, particularly for online co-op (I mean, it is the only option).

Racing games don't tend to get too much of a reaction, as you either enjoy them or find them boring. Ubisoft's The Crew series has led a weird life, with all the games earning fairly strong communities despite none of them garnering extreme acclaim. These are simply fun open-world racers that have decent implementation of multiplayer, although Motorfest doesn't focus on this element quite as much as you would think. Still, co-op lets up to 4 players jump into the same world, allowing them to free roam or engage in playlist events. I enjoyed Motorfest in single-player, but co-op definitely makes it easier to stick around for more than a couple of hours.

PS Plus Extra has received a couple of great Day One games in 2025, including August's fantastic Sword of the Sea. However, if we are talking exclusively about titles that support online co-op, Abiotic Factor is in a league of its own. After a spell in early access, Deep Field Games' masterclass made its full debut on PC and consoles, and it is about as close to a perfect cooperative experience as PS Plus subscribers are likely to get. Set in an underground facility that is way weirder and bigger than it initially seems, Abiotic Factor is about surviving and thriving with your mates, exploring the ever-expanding universe while also creating a home that you call your own.

Played from a first-person perspective, you will spend your time preparing for expeditions/missions, investigating cool areas filled with alien monsters, satisfying basic needs like hunger and exhaustion, and just chilling with your mates. Abiotic Factor especially nails the latter, as the game does a stellar job of blending action with downtime where you can just exist as part of your group.

Ghost of Tsushima is a fantastic action-adventure game with a robust single-player campaign. A few months following the base title's debut, Sucker Punch dropped Legends, a co-op side experience deep enough to justify a standalone release. Along with common modes like Survival, Legends also comes with a Story that guides two players through roughly 6 hours of content.

The 60 Best Local Co-Op & Split-Screen Games You Can Play on the PS5 (2025)

Although couch co-op isn't as common as it once was, there are still plenty of great local co-op and split-screen games for the PlayStation 5.

Legends has four classes: Samurai, Ronin, Assassin, and Hunter. Each one fits an archetype and has a specific role they should be fulfilling in combat scenarios. While some options, like the Samurai, are viable for solo or two-player runs, classes like the Ronin are designed with support in mind. Legends might just be the best PS Plus online co-op game.

  • 1-4 Online Co-Op

EDF has never wavered in its desire to provide shlock-style action, and Earth Defense Force 6 is one of the best entries in the franchise. Now, to set expectations for newcomers, these games are silly camp, along with being low-budget compared to most established series. However, EDF's brilliance lies in its simplicity, as you just spend all your time shooting at insects and aliens.

Solo runs are possible, but co-op is the best way to experience these campaigns, which are long and repetitive. With four classes and a plethora of powerful weapons and mecha, EDF 6 is an absolute blast with friends, as you can enjoy each other's company while destroying armies and cities.

As Dusk Falls shines the brightest in local co-op, where players use their mobiles or tablets to vote on decisions. However, the game also supports online co-op, allowing up to 8 players to join in. Considering everyone needs to have a copy for this to work, As Dusk Falls being on PS Plus Extra makes it a far more realistic option for large groups, as it is hard to imagine that every person would be interested in purchasing a story-driven adventure game that is well-regarded but not out of this world beloved.

8 Player co-op games feature
8 Best Co-Op Games That Support 8 Players, Ranked

These engaging indie games support up to 8-player co-op sessions, ensuring players can craft timeless memories with friends.

Revolving around two families in Arizona, As Dusk Falls explores multi-generational trauma, all the while telling a story that leans into crime and melodrama. The storytelling is quite good and regularly intense, and the choices presented to players are plentiful and significant. The art style can be a bit of a sticking point at first, but it will probably grow on you as time passes. The co-op is implemented pretty well, and it is always interesting to see how your friend group votes. Admittedly, this is one of those games that requires everyone to really participate and not just pick the "wrong" answer for the fun of it.
