PlayStation Plus is a fixture of the gaming world. Twice a month, PS5 owners hotly anticipate Sony's announcement of the new PS Plus games that will be coming to either the Essential, Extra, or Premium tiers. What are the differences between PS Plus Extra and Premium? This article will ensure you have all the information to make an informed decision.
This article lists all the games available as part of each tier, and it is updated bi-monthly to take into account the latest additions. All The PlayStation Plus Tiers
An Overview Covering All Three PS Plus Subscriptions
Rather than present a one-size-fits-all subscription, PS Plus lets users have their pick from three tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium. Here is a summary of each level's offerings:
- Essential – The core PS Plus benefits as they were before the 2022 relaunch. Subscribers gain access to online multiplayer, monthly games, exclusive discounts, and a few other benefits.
- Extra – Essential tier benefits + a catalog of downloadable PS5 and PS4 games.
- Premium – Essential & Extra tiers benefits + a catalog of classic PS3, PS2, PS1, and PSP games.
Ultimately, picking a PS Plus tier comes down to someone's needs. If a player will only use the online multiplayer feature, Essential will suffice, and there is little to gain from subscribing to one of the higher tiers.
Premium's central selling point is its Classics Catalog, which adds hundreds of titles on top of the PS5 and PS4 games that are also available in the Extra tier. While this collection is grand, please note that PS3 games are played through Cloud Streaming and cannot be downloaded. Consequently, their performance is dependent on the user's internet connection.
Which PS Plus Tier Should You Buy?
As there is quite a jump in price from one level to the next, a full breakdown of each tier's features and benefits might help someone decide whether they should go for Essential, Extra, or Premium.

Please note that you will need to log in to your PlayStation account on the browser before you can see your membership options (and subscribe). Occasionally, there might be an offer for new members, so it can be useful. The process is pretty straightforward.

What Is PS Plus On PC?
PS Plus Premium subscribers also have the option to stream games via the service's PC app. The library includes titles from both the Games and Classics Catalog, although it is not the full selection. Here are some things interested parties should know about this option:
- The DualShock 4 is the only confirmed compatible controller. That does not mean other controllers will not work, just that they are not guaranteed by Sony.
- PS Plus On PC is not currently available in every country that has the main streaming service.
- PS5 games cannot be streamed.
- A PS5 or PS4 is not needed to subscribe to PS Plus on PC.
- Sony recommends a Broadband wired internet connection of a minimum of 5 Mbps.
Your mileage will vary greatly with PS Plus' streaming service, and the quality can even vary between PS5 and PC. Personally, games stream really well on the PS5, but I notice a slightly bigger delay on PC.

The PS Plus Essential Free Games For April 2026
Sword Art Online Fractured Daydream (PS5), Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered (PS5/PS4), Lords of the Fallen (PS5)
These PS Plus Essential games will be available to add to your library until May 4, 2026.
With each passing month, PS Plus Essential becomes more of an afterthought, with its lineup being largely overshadowed by the Extra tier. Sony still hands out a couple of PS5 games per month, but they tend to be a couple of years old and not that exciting. So far, 2026 has been particularly underwhelming, and April is a step back from its predecessor's lineup. That said, the chosen games aren't bad by any stretch of the imagination, and they are exactly those types of releases that are perfect for a subscription service.
Lords of the Fallen is the headline act, even though it is technically not the biggest name. The 2023 Soulslike came out to a relatively mixed reception, garnering praise for its graphics and scale, along with criticism for its boss fights, combat, and performance. In 2023, Lords of the Fallen was a middle-of-the-road entry in a genre that had become oversaturated, making it difficult to recommend to anybody but completionists. However, since then, Hexworks has put in the time and effort to improve things, culminating in a far superior 2.0 version. At this point, LOTF is a genuinely very solid action RPG that still sticks closely to the Souls formula, albeit doing it well enough to not feel like a poor man's clone. LOTF 2 should be coming in the near future, so this is a good time to try the original.
Although not the headline act, the month's biggest name is Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered, which brings the original trilogy to PS Plus. Considering the importance of these games to the PS1's legacy, it feels right that Lara Croft's initial adventures are available to subscribers, even if only temporarily. The first Tomb Raider is a masterclass in atmosphere, puzzle-platforming, and style. Yes, it is a product of its time to an extent, but the remaster modernizes enough elements to make it playable in 2026. The sequels don't reach the same heights, but they are still very good in their own right.
Finally, we have Sword Art Online Fractured Daydream, which is the most expensive game on the PS Store at a full $59.99. SAO games have a long and polarizing history, with many of them struggling to offer anything worthwhile to anybody but the biggest fans. Fractured Daydream takes things a step further by focusing more on multiplayer, although it has single-player content as well.

What Games Are On PlayStation Plus Extra & Premium?
Most subscribers will likely invest in PS Plus Extra, as that tier contains more than enough PS5 and PS4 games to keep someone busy for a long time. Unless specifically interested in classic PS games or Cloud Streaming, there is not much reason to pick Premium over Extra. Still, subscribers of both tiers can download and install the following titles.

A new month, new PS Plus Extra games are now available. The April 2026 lineup is probably not the most exciting of the year, but it is still a well-rounded roster of games that should be able to keep most people entertained in one form or another, even if there might not be too many "oh, heck yeah!" additions. The biggest arrival is Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, which is one of the best open-world games of the last decade. The PS4 HZD already looks fantastic, and the remaster brings it to the level of Horizon Forbidden West. The sequel is no longer on the subscription service, so we at least have Aloy's first (and arguably best) adventure to revisit.
Speaking of open-world games debuting on PS Plus, The Crew Motorfest is here and waiting. Racing games are simultaneously eternally popular and also incredibly niche. You either love or don't care about these titles, with the only in-between being folks who will jump in for a couple of hours before moving on to something else. An open-world game might seem like a poor fit for the latter group, but The Crew Motorfest fits that vibe pretty well.
Now let's get to the more linear games, which there really aren't many in April 2026. The Casting of Frank Stone drops players into the Dead by Daylight universe, and it follows the typical Supermassive Games formula. That is not a bad thing if you are craving an interactive drama where your choices matter, along with a couple of decent scares. Squirrel with a Gun is stupid fun that delivers exactly what its title promises.
The rest of the lineup consists of Warriors Abyss, Monster Train, and Football Manager 26. Monster Train is one of the best deckbuilders of the last few years, and it is a pretty easy recommendation for any strategy fans. Warriors Abyss combines roguelite elements with musou combat to mostly decent effect. Finally, FM 26 has a bit too many issues to justify a purchase, but you might as well try it while it is on PS Plus.

A little-known feature available to Premium subscribers, Sony Pictures Core is a streaming service that contains over 2000 movies that can be rented or bought. Anyone can create an account, but people who have a Premium subscription have access to a range of movies.
Most of the biggest recent titles will need to be purchased, but the selection has a couple of older titles that can keep someone entertained for a few hours when they do not feel like playing a game. The Sony Pictures Catalog also includes anime content from Crunchyroll.

How PS Plus Works
PlayStation Plus is an ever-evolving service. While this guide covers everything that most people need to know about Sony's platform, the below articles expand on a few points.
FAQ
Q: What are the differences between PS Plus Extra and Premium?
The main difference is that PS Plus Premium has the classic collection, which includes PS3, PS2, PS1, and PSP games. PS VR2 titles are exclusive to the Premium tier as well, as are game trials and cloud streaming.
Q: Which PS Plus subscription should I get?
Only you can answer that, as it depends on what you want or are looking for. If you only want to have multiplayer access, then just stick to Essential. If you will likely only play PS5 or PS4 games, the Extra tier is all you need.
Q: Can PS Plus benefits be shared?
While limited to one PS5 or PS4 console, certain PS Plus benefits are shared among the different accounts on the system. These include online multiplayer, access to Premium & Extra's libraries, downloaded monthly games, and games purchased using a PS Plus discount.
Q: I made a mistake, can I change my PS Plus tier?
Yes. If someone wants to move up to a higher PS Plus tier, they only need to purchase a new membership at their desired level. This upgrade will happen instantly, and the customer will be charged a prorated fee for the rest of the current month.
If a member wishes to downgrade their tier, they would need to visit their Sony account's "Subscription" tab to perform the change. This alteration will come into effect once the next payment is made.
Q: When are new PS Plus Extra games added?
The announcement typically happens on the third Wednesday of a month, with the games arriving the following week.
