Magic: The Gathering’s upcoming crossover with Marvel Super Heroes is primed to be one of the most ambitious collaborations in the history of the trading card game. The set brings together some of the greatest superheroes from throughout Marvel’s history with the Avengers, The Fantastic Four, and a whole assortment of iconic Villains. Converting such iconic superheroes into a format that both stays true to their superhero roots while not being completely alien to longtime Magic fans was a major challenge for Wizards of the Coast. However, Wizards of the Coast already had a solid foundation to build on for Marvel Super Heroes.

Magic’s crossover with Spider-Man in 2025 laid the groundwork for much of the conceptual framework for Marvel Super Heroes. Combining iconic superheroes with fitting Magic mechanics like Connive, and creating new concepts for gameplay abilities make Marvel Super Heroes a unique set in more ways than one.

Make Marvel’s Heroes Super with Power-Up

One of the biggest new mechanics being added with the Marvel Super Heroes expansion is Power-Up. Power-Up provides a one-time buff, similar to the Exhaust abilities introduced in Aetherdrift, giving the creature a boost in the form of +1/+1 counters alongside other bonus effects. Power-Up also includes the ability for Heroes to boost their battle prowess right away, reducing Power-Up costs by the Creature’s mana cost during the turn it is cast.

Power-Up doesn’t just provide boosts to raw power and toughness; it also grants special bonuses attached to the abilities as well. Thanos, the Mad Titan provides a powerful board wipe alongside the counters, allowing Thanos to “snap” away Creatures, choosing either odd or even mana values to destroy. Captain Marvel similarly gains indestructible when he powers up, fitting with the card’s flavor as “Earth’s Protector.”

Build the Ultimate Group of Heroes with Teamwork

Given the heavy focus on superhero teams like The Avengers and The Fantastic Four, one of the new mechanics puts the focus on making creatures work together. The new Teamwork keyword functions as an additional cost for some spells in Marvel Super Heroes, working similarly to the Convoke mechanic. Players can tap creatures with total power equal to or greater than the cost specified by the ability in order to gain additional Teamwork effects on cards, often used to achieve both effects of modal cards that require the player to choose.

Teamwork encourages players to use their creatures towards a greater goal, achieving stronger effects on their Instants and Sorceries by working together. Hulk Smash can allow players to both destroy noncreature Artifacts and potentially other Creatures by using Teamwork, while Murdock’s Crusade offers both Creature and Enchantment removal.

Concoct a Villainous Plan with New Enchantments

Magic: The Gathering is bringing one new subtype to the game as part of Marvel Super Heroes with the debut of Plan Enchantment cards. Plans make use of a new type of counter, fittingly named plan counters, to build up towards a big payoff. The first Plan card revealed by Wizards of the Coast, Doom Reigns Supreme, tasks the player with assembling a group of 5 Villains, draining the opponent for 1 Life each time a Villain they control enters the battlefield. Reaching the fifth Plan counter then causes the player to enact their villainous plot, with Doom Reigns Supreme exiling cards from an opponent’s library and playing them for free.

Plans represent the more villainous side of the Marvel Super Heroes expansion, with the player enacting a grand plot to take down their opponent. Plans will also get some non-Enchantment support within the set, including The Masters of Evil allowing players to search for Plan cards in their deck.

Combat Marvel’s Greatest Villains with Stronger Heroes

While the Hero Creature subtype was present in the Spider-Man crossover, and even in the Final Fantasy set, Marvel Super Heroes gives players plenty of tools to build their own Hero teams. Wizards of the Coast stresses that, while Spider-Man included support for Villain-themed decks, Hero-themed decks will be receiving more tools in Marvel Super Heroes. One card revealed for the set, Agent Phil Coulson, puts +1/+1 counters on each Hero Creature the player controls. The expansion will also include even more support for players looking to build their own ideal Hero team.

Equipment Worthy of an Avenger

What is a Hero without their weapon of choice? Marvel features plenty of heroes with iconic weapons, like Captain America’s shield and Thor’s Mjolnir hammer. Magic: The Gathering’s Marvel Super Heroes set includes its own special variant of the Equip ability, geared towards giving the hero their weapons. The new Worthy keyword allows players to equip iconic weapons to creatures for a low cost, though their use is more restricted than normal Equipment cards. Mjolnir, Hammer of Thor can only be equipped to worthy creatures, defined on the card as a Legendary non-Villain Creature that has red or white in its color identity.

The conditions on the Equipment don’t apply to just Marvel heroes, however. Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that any Creature from throughout Magic’s history can wield the Marvel weapons if they fall under the worthy categories. Nahiri or Cloud Strife will be able to wield Mjolnir’s power just as easily as Thor himself.

Connive Returns With Even More Support

Connive was one of the major mechanics featured in Magic’s Spider-Man crossover, and the mechanic is making a return in Marvel Super Heroes. Connive was mainly used on Villains in Spider-Man, allowing players to cycle through their decks and power up their creatures, and it occupies a similar space in Marvel Super Heroes. Wizards of the Coast is also giving Villains a powerful new tool to boost Connive effects, with Leader, Super-Genius giving players an extra card before they Connive.

More Old Mechanics Return in a New Way

Alongside the wealth of new mechanics, Wizards of the Coast is using some of Marvel’s most beloved Heroes to implement older mechanics in an interesting way. Improvise will be making a return in the set with Iron Man’s Arc Reactor, allowing players to use their Artifacts to pay for the card’s cost. Elektra will make use of the Sneak ability introduced in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set, slipping onto the battlefield for a cheaper alternate cost by returning an attacking creature. Saga cards will be a major focus of the set, being used to recreate some of Marvel’s most iconic stories like World War Hulk and The Coming of Galactus.

Marvel Super Heroes will also take another note from Magic’s Spider-Man crossover by introducing new double-faced cards of some of its most iconic Heroes. Much like Peter Parker transforming into The Amazing Spider-Man, characters like Bruce Banner, Tony Stark, and Monica Rambeau will feature double-faced cards with their real-world alias on one half and their superhero persona on the back. The cards also feature the same unique quirk as the Spider-Man cards, with the human side able to transform into the superhero while on the battlefield.
