Elden Ring: Limgrave Complete Walkthrough

All Tarnished begin their journey in Limgrave, Elden Ring's starting region. Whether you're a newcomer or a Soulsborne veteran, this region is packed with secrets to uncover, dungeons to clear, and bosses to slay. Today, we'll be walking you through the most important areas of this region.

This walkthrough will act as a sort of mini-hub for all of our Limgrave guides, containing all of our in-depth dungeon, boss, and collectible guides to help you start off on the right foot. An in-depth breakdown of how to navigate this zone can also be found below. Use the table of contents above to jump to any section that interests you.

Limgrave Walkthrough

Grabbing The Essentials (Minor Spoilers)

You'll start your adventure at The First Step. Speak to the NPC there, activate the Shrine of Grace, and then make your way to the Church of Elleh north of your location. A Tree Sentinelwill be patrolling the road, so sneak around him if you don't wish to fight a boss this early.

At the Church of Elleh, you'll find a wandering merchant who will sell you a Crafting Kit, a core item needed to access Elden Ring's crafting system. Grab the Golden Runes just outside the church's entrance, break them, and purchase the kit.

Continue up the road until you find a massive enemy encampment. Hang left of the camp to find a Shrine of Grace just outside a gate. Rest at the shrine to speak with Melina. Accept her request to unlock the ability to level up. She'll also give you an item to summon a mount, Torrent. Hop on your mount, walk towards the stone slab inside the camp to find a map of West Limgrave, and then leave. Fast travel back to the Church of Elleh (don't walk there) to spawn Renna the Witch. She'll give you a bell needed to summon spirits alongside the Lone Wolf Ashes, one of the best early-game summons.

Should you miss Renna at the Church of Elleh, you can purchase the bell and spirits she gives you from the Twin Maiden NPC at Roundtable Hold.

Now, fast travel back to the Gatefront. We recommend clearing out the Gatefront Ruins at this point, utilizing your new spirits and horse to turn the tide. Use stealth to kill the enemies patrolling the perimeter, then sneak towards the main road. Backstab the soldier with a horn on its hip to avoid alerting the camp of your presence. Once he's dead, summon your spirits and clear the encampment out.

With the base cleared, open the chests in the parked wagons to get yourself some new gear (a greatsword and flail). The center of the base will have a staircase that will lead to your first Ash of War and a whetblade, allowing you to alter your weapon arts and infusions. Head back to the Church of Elleh and purchase a Torch from the merchant; you'll need one for most dungeons in this area. Cracked Pots are also worth purchasing, as you'll need them to craft Fire Pots. Any leftover runes should be spent on character levels.

Make your way back to Gatefront, due west of the camp. Get on your horse, then run through the gate, hugging the left wall when going through the path. At the end of the narrow passage will be a golden tree with a Golden Seed. Be sure to take it; it will increase your flask charges by one. Continue following the road until you see a shack and Site of Grace on your right. Speak to the NPC inside the shack to get another Spirit Ash.

You now have the essentials to start your journey. If you wish to explore at your own pace, we highly encourage you to do so. However, if you'd rather have some guidance as to where you should go, consult the section below. Whenever you're ready, follow the golden trail emitting from the Shrine of Grace to find the first major boss of this region: Margit, the Fell Omen. Defeat him to unlock the Stormveil Castle legacy dungeon that leads to Godrick.

Gearing Up (Progression Spoilers)

Before you continue, we highly recommend that you grab the Godrick Spirit Ashes in the graveyard southwest of Stormhill Shack. Hop on Torrent and follow the cliffside until you reach a graveyard patrolled by passive jellyfish. Make a right U-turn when you reach the area and follow the path to another set of tombstones. One of these tombstones will have the ashes. These knights are absurdly tanky and stay useful for your entire playthrough.

From there, we recommend you clear the first three dungeons in the game: Coastal Cave, Groveside Cave, and Stormfoot Catacombs. All of these dungeons can be found west of the Church of Elleh. Stormfoot is quite difficult, so if you're struggling to clear that one, you can always come back to it later. These dungeons will give you a nice chunk of runes, a talisman, and the ability to tailor your armor. Use those runes to level your character.

Now is a good time to head to the eastern section of Limgrave. Fast travel to Stormgate and follow the road east. After you cross a bridge, head south until you find a small ruin. This ruin houses a miniboss and a sorceress NPC that can sell sorceries to Intelligence builds. Faith builds that need some new tools should unlock Roundtable Hold at this point to access a Faith merchant.

There's a small caravan just outside of the Waypoint Ruins Cellar. Clearing the caravan grants a greataxe. We recommend taking on the caravan if possible, as the number of enemies you'll kill will grant a nice chunk of runes.

You should now follow the road outside the cellar to the north. It will turn into a dirt road and eventually lead you to an abandoned church. Ignore the Troll guarding it and head inside to find the Flask of Wondrous Physick and a Sacred Tear, increasing the amount of HP or FP your flasks grant. An NPC named Kenneth Haight can be found atop the overpass you just went through. Speak with him, then clear out the fort at the south-most part of the area. To get a map of the region, continue to follow the road south until you find an ethereal candle stand. It will lead you to a map of this part of the map.

Just south of the map's location is a Minor Erdtree. They'll be an item resting near the base of the tree that will grant the Greenspill and Spiked Cracked Crystal Tears, items you can mix into your Wondrous Phsyick potion. Continue to follow the road south to find the fort. Grab the Golden Seed resting under a golden tree, then clear out the fort. Talk to the NPC that gave you the quest when finished to obtain the Erdsteel Dagger.

Minor Erdtrees will be your main source of Crystal Tears in Elden Ring. Keep an eye out for massive trees while out exploring.

At this point, you should be ready to fight the horrors of Limgrave's lake. Head to the northern end of the lake to start the Flying Dragon Agheel boss fight. You can kill the dragon or ignore it; it's up to you. Enter the Limgrave Tunnels dungeon it's guarding to get yourself some much-needed Smithing Shards. If you have the runes, fast travel back to the Church of Elleh (or Roundtable Hold if you've unlocked it) to upgrade your weapon.

With a stronger weapon in hand, follow the river on the northeast corner of the lake. You'll be invaded partway down the river, but you can wait for an NPC to spawn and assist you. With the invader down, clear the three dungeons along the lake: Murkwater Cave, Murkwater Catacombs, and Highroad Cave. Purchase some cookbooks from wandering merchants, then spend the rest on levels.

You'll find a Spirit spring (a sort of wind trampoline) near the river that will take you to Saintsbridge. Activate the Shrine of Grace, then head west to find the Deathtouched Catacombs dungeon. Clear the dungeon and save your runes. Continue heading west to find the Warmaster's Shack. Inside is a vendor who sells some useful early-game Ashes of War. Warcry and Storm Blade are good options. When ready, climb up the cliffside north of your location. You'll find an empty stone bowl with the Strength-Knot Crystal Tear, increasing your Strength by ten points for three minutes while active.

With all of this gear and runes, you should be more than ready to take on Margit and Stormveil Castle. However, if you're still having a tough time or need some new weapons, feel free to head south towards the Weeping Peninsula. This remote area has fairly weak enemies, quite a few weapons to find, and even more flask upgrades. Veteran Soulslike players should also give the Tree Sentinel and Crucible Knight bosses a try.
