Local linear programmatic advertising is already active and thriving, says ITN Networks's Craig Sulema in a TVNewsCheck op-ed today. Responding to columnist Tom Sly's piece on Monday, Craig maintains that local linear programmatic doesn't have to be targeted exactly as digital programmatic advertising is and that different media target differently on DSPs. #media #advertising #programmatic https://lnkd.in/eBTPwyKc ry-workflow-supply-access-are-what-matter/

Should the courts have the final say after the FCC gives the green light? ⚖️ The broadcast industry is at a crossroads. While the FCC has approved the landmark Nexstar-Tegna merger, legal challenges are now threatening to derail the deal. In his latest piece, Harry Jessell makes a compelling case: Courts shouldn't meddle in what the FCC has already duly reviewed and approved. Why this matters: 🔹 Regulatory Certainty: Constant judicial second-guessing creates a volatile environment for media investment. 🔹 Industry Evolution: Mergers are a key component of how the broadcast sector scales to compete with digital giants. 🔹 The FCC’s Role: Is judicial overreach undermining the authority of the industry's primary regulator? This isn't just about two companies—it’s about the future of broadcast consolidation and the rules of the game. What’s your take? Should the courts step back once the FCC has spoken, or is judicial oversight necessary to protect the public interest? Is reality TV’s golden era officially over? And if so, what does the industry lose in its wake? In Stuart N. Brotman's debut column for TVNewsCheck, Brotman—a distinguished professor and seasoned media analyst—dives deep into the shifting tides of unscripted programming. "The Real Loss in Reality TV’s Decline" isn't just about ratings or production costs; it’s an insightful look at the structural and cultural impact this shift has on the entire broadcast ecosystem. For years, reality TV served as the industry’s "utility player"—cost-effective, high-engagement, and infinitely adaptable. As the landscape changes, the void it leaves behind presents both a challenge and an opportunity for media executives and creators. Is local TV news facing an existential crisis of trust? 📺 In her debut column for TVNewsCheck, Jill Manuel dives deep into the two pillars that will determine whether local news survives or fades: Trust and Visibility. Jill argues that rebuilding authentic community connections is the only path forward for broadcast professionals and newsroom leaders. The programmatic puzzle for linear TV is far from solved. 🧩 Is "linear programmatic" finally here, or are we just digitizing old habits? Tom Sly argues the industry is currently caught in a Taxonomy Trap. Without a unified definition of what "programmatic" actually means for linear broadcasting, we risk stalling the very progress we’re trying to achieve. Key distinctions that matter: 🔹 Automatic vs. Programmatic: Automating a workflow simply digitizes manual tasks. True programmatic is about data-driven, real-time decisioning and audience-based buying. 🔹 The Trust Factor: This linguistic confusion creates a "black box" for buyers. When definitions are murky, transparency suffers, and advertiser trust erodes—slowing down adoption across the board. For broadcast executives and media buyers, clearing the air on these definitions isn't just about semantics; it’s about building the foundation for a reliable, scalable future. NBCUniversal Local saw its social media engagement jump 80% after talent took a page out of the creator economy, posting vertical videos using their personal handles on Instagram and TikTok accounts. The company established a structure to train its journalists in the approach, including adherence to established standards and ethics, and the program has expanded, in some cases leading stations to deepen reporting and broadcast stories about issues raised first on social. AI bots are devouring news content — without paying a dime. 📰⚠️ Now those bots may outnumber humans on internet traffic next year according to the latest column from Jon Accarrino. News organizations are inadvertently funding their own disruption by providing free training data to AI companies scraping their work. This unchecked extraction threatens the value and control of journalistic IP. It's time for broadcasters, digital publishers, and media leaders to reclaim ownership. Tactical moves like technical blocks and licensing agreements aren’t optional—they’re essential to protect our industry’s future. How is your newsroom guarding against this flood of AI-driven content scraping? Read more: https://lnkd.in/effUgMc4 #MediaStrategy #AI #Journalism #DigitalMedia #TVNewsCheck
