Speaking at the Coal Innovation Market Strategies Conference in Park City, Utah, Deputy Secretary James P. Danly of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) discussed his vision for expanding American coal exports. "I would love to see the United States over the next 10 years increase the total amount of coal export by an order of magnitude," Danly said. "The demand is real because we're not the only ones experiencing electric demand. The rest of the world is too." Danly also highlighted why reliable baseload generation matters at home, describing coal assets as fundamental to keeping electricity prices low. "You're blessed here with a lot of coal, a lot of mining and a lot of possibilities for rare earths and critical minerals." HGEO Acting Assistant Secretary Curt Coccodrilli visited Utah, touring the FORGE geothermal site in Milford, the Fossil Rock Mine in Emery County, and the Savage Energy Terminal in Price, and he came away impressed by more than the geology. Coccodrilli pointed to Utah's supportive governor, its congressional delegation, and what he called "a very willing workforce that is just phenomenal." He was equally direct about coal's global role. "Coal is still the number one generator of electricity around the world. And coal can be done well, done right and done effectively." The United States leads the world in oil and natural gas production. We hit record-high oil output of 13.6 million barrels per day in 2025 and are now producing 24 million barrels per day of oil and other liquid fuels, more than Russia and Saudi Arabia combined. In natural gas, America is producing nearly as much as Russia, Iran, and China combined, with 2026 projected to break last year's record. More power on the grid, lower costs for American families. HGEO Acting Assistant Secretary Curt Coccodrilli laid out the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s priorities during his visit to Utah, describing an agenda hyper-focused on adding electrons to the grid rather than subtracting them. "There are only a handful of ways to get to baseload power," Coccodrilli said. "It's oil, gas, coal, nuclear, geothermal." He also underscored President Trump's top priority: "Affordability is probably our number one issue that the president has us focused on." New U.S. Energy Information Administration analysis shows that combined oil and natural gas production in the Permian rose sharply between 2015 and 2025 without a significant increase in annual well completions. A major reason is reach! The average lateral length of a new horizontal Permian well grew 77% over the decade, increasing from 6,149 feet in 2015 to 10,867 feet in 2025. Wells with laterals longer than 15,000 feet, or nearly three miles, were virtually nonexistent before 2020. By 2025, they accounted for 15% of new Permian completions. 🛢️ Combined Permian production across western Texas and eastern New Mexico climbed from 2.9 million barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2015 to 11.2 million in 2025, nearly quadrupling, while new well completions consistently hovered around 6,000 per year since 2022. https://lnkd.in/gd8mHNyz
