Last week, Colorado School of Mines students and leaders joined top government officials in Washington, D.C. for a roundtable on the future of the mining and minerals workforce. Hosted by Assistant Secretary of Energy Audrey Robertson and U.S. Department of Energy Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation in partnership with the National Energy Dominance Council, the discussion highlighted the crucial role our students play in shaping the sector for economic and national security. Following the meeting, DOE announced a $100M investment in mining education to promote the growth of America’s critical minerals workforce. Proud to see Mines leading the way! The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and TechWerx - a DOE innovation hub just announced the Space Photovoltaics (PV) Research and Development Partnership Intermediary Agreement (PIA) opportunity which will award $12 million to R&D projects that address key challenges in durability, performance, cost, and manufacturing throughput in space PV technologies. The PIA aims to advance mission-critical space PV capabilities within the United States. "The next frontier for solar PV power generation is in space,” said Assistant Secretary of Energy Audrey Robertson. “As demand for space-grade PV skyrockets, this investment will establish American leadership in next-generation, space-based PV, bolster our national security, and enhance our economic competitiveness.” The Integrated Energy Systems Office (IESO) will host an informational webinar on September 15, 2026, from 3–4 p.m. ET to discuss the PIA opportunity and the areas of focus. University and industry research laboratory teams are encouraged to apply by October 8, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET. In partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the ANSI - American National Standards Institute will host a Critical Minerals Standards Coordination (CMSC) hybrid workshop in Washington, D.C., September 23–24. Attendees will explore the framework needed to develop a vital U.S. standards strategy for critical minerals. Standards are a critical enabler of secure, competitive, transparent, resilient, and innovative critical mineral supply chains. Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Alternative Fuels and Feedstocks Office (AFFO) announced its recipients for the FY26 Waste to Energy and Materials Technical Assistance program. Through this program, the National Laboratory of the Rockies provides free help to state, local, and tribal governments to use new technologies that turn waste into energy or recover materials like critical minerals. The program aims to help local officials create sensible solutions for their waste management issues, fill knowledge gaps, and plan and carry out implementation approaches that fit their communities. Assistant Secretary of Energy Audrey Robertson traveled to Penn State University for a tour of the facilities and a roundtable discussion with students about issues facing our nation’s energy workforce. This trip comes on the heels of the launch of PROSPECT, a program dedicated to funding new curricula, teaching tools, financial-aid programs, and other incentives that promote continued growth in these fields. By investing in the next generation workforce, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is investing in the domestic production, processing, recovery, and recycling of critical minerals, which can revitalize American mining and secure domestic supply chains for the materials that underpin the modern economy. We’re celebrating the success of hydropower and its continued evolution in the 21st century. In the nearly 150 years since Niagara Falls became the first hydroelectric generation facility in the U.S., hydropower has worked to meet American electricity needs and grown into a reliable, domestic source of energy nationwide.
