ALL ABOARD 🚢: In 1959, the U.S. launched the NS Savannah — the world’s first merchant ship powered by nuclear energy. But the technology never caught on for commercial shipping. Today, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is launching a new initiative to bring nuclear power for peaceful maritime uses into the 21st century. Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea (ATLAS) will explore applications such as floating nuclear power plants and civilian ships powered by small modular reactors. These technologies could enable ships to travel farther and faster while reducing reliance on frequent refueling.
