Investors don’t care about your TAM. They care if you’ve found a small group of people who will actually pay. I wasted months building slides on massive markets. Then I raised my round after showing a simple chart: 12 customers, $8,500 MRR, and a 3-week sales cycle. Stop selling the ocean. Sell the puddle you can stand in. How do you know early if an investor is the wrong fit? Often, the meeting feels good. The investor is engaged, asks thoughtful questions, and sounds encouraging. On the surface, everything seems positive. The signals show up in what they optimise for. If the conversation keeps drifting toward later rounds, cheque sizes they typically write, or metrics that only make sense at a much later stage, the fit is likely off. Not because they dislike the business, but because your stage does not match their deployment model. Early-stage alignment is about expectations. When an investor is right for your stage, questions focus on learning speed, early signals, and near-term milestones.
