Tanveer I. Kathawalla shared thisThere are few blessings in my life that I cherish more than being an American. As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday today, I’m reminded that while we rightly honor figures like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin, many of the lesser known founders have stories just as extraordinary. Take Robert Morris. One of the most successful entrepreneurs in the colonies, he understood exactly what independence would cost. Yet after deciding the cause was just, he risked his fortune and even his personal credit to help finance the Revolution when the new nation had little more than determination. Or George Taylor. He arrived in America as an indentured servant with virtually nothing. Through hard work and perseverance, he rose to own an ironworks before signing the Declaration of Independence a powerful reminder that the promise of America has always been rooted in opportunity and upward mobility. One was a wealthy merchant. The other began with almost nothing. Both chose to risk everything for an idea that had never before existed: a free and independent republic founded on the belief that all are created equal. As America turns 250, these stories remind us that our nation’s history wasn’t built by a handful of famous names alone. It was shaped by entrepreneurs, immigrants, craftsmen, doctors, farmers, and ordinary citizens who summoned extraordinary courage when history called. Happy 250th, America!

Tanveer I. Kathawalla shared thisI spent part of my childhood in Europe. Near our home outside Paris, I often ran past the Lafayette Escadrille Memorial, which honors the Americans who volunteered to fly for the French Foreign Legion before the United States entered World War I. At the time, I never thought much about it. Looking back, what strikes me is who those volunteers were: entrepreneurs, athletes, writers, and diplomats who believed that events beyond America’s borders mattered long before our country officially entered the conflict. As I’ve gotten older and as my career in entrepreneurship and national security has exposed me to questions of foreign policy and statecraft, I’ve come to appreciate how each generation wrestles with America’s role in the world, and how those decisions can reverberate far beyond their own time. In the years following World War I, Americans from similarly diverse backgrounds came together to think more seriously about those questions, ultimately leading to the founding of the Council on Foreign Relations. That history makes it especially meaningful to have been accepted into the Council on Foreign Relations Term Member Program. I am deeply grateful to Frank Finelli, Rob Quartel, Nilmini Rubin, Kahlil (KB) Byrd , and General Joseph Votel for their nomination, endorsement, and encouragement. I look forward to this opportunity to learn from & contribute to this remarkable community and institution.

Tanveer I. Kathawalla shared thisWith SpaceX, IPO today, I find myself trying to situate this moment. In 1892, GE came to market just as electricity was transitioning from scientific breakthrough to mass adoption. Investors weren’t simply buying shares in a company that made generators and light bulbs; the opportunity was to invest in the technological foundation upon which the Industrial Revolution would be built. What followed wasn’t just the rise of GE. Factories reorganized around electric power. Cities illuminated their streets. Homes filled with appliances. New companies emerged to manufacture, distribute, and capitalize on a world transformed by electricity. The next chapter of American prosperity wasn’t created by one business; it was unleashed by the infrastructure that made thousands of others possible. I wonder if we’ll look back on the SpaceX IPO in much the same way. As the moment markets fully embraced a new era of American building. A future defined by reusable launch, autonomous systems, advanced manufacturing, robotics, defense technologies, energy abundance, and space-enabled services. Entire industries that become possible when the cost of accessing orbit falls dramatically. For much of the last three decades, the greatest fortunes were built moving information across screens. The defining companies of that era mastered bits. With the market reaction and the IPOs of leading AI companies happening later this year, the next era will belong to those who can combine bits with atoms. As someone who has spent much of my career investing in and building deep technology companies, I find this moment profoundly optimistic. It feels like a return to a distinctly American tradition: solving hard problems, building tangible things, and expanding the frontier of what is possible. History rarely repeats itself, but surely does rhyme.

Kathawalla reposted thisIn February 1945, during the Battle of Iwo Jima, a 19-year-old Marine named Jacklyn “Jack” Lucas threw himself onto two grenades to protect the Marines beside him. He survived. Years later, when asked why he did it, his answer was remarkably simple: he didn’t think about it. He just reacted to protect the men next to him. That has stayed with us because #MemorialDay often gets reduced into abstractions about patriotism, sacrifice, or service. But so much of history turns on ordinary people making impossible decisions in a single moment for people beside them. What also gets overlooked is what happened after the war. An entire generation came home and built companies, factories, supply chains, shipyards, engineering firms, and institutions with the same mentality: responsibility to something larger than themselves. You can still feel traces of that generation inside many legacy industrial businesses. Quiet pride. Long-term thinking. A belief that reliability matters. An understanding that systems fail when duty disappears. At Pioneer1890, spending time around founder-led industrial and defense companies has made us think often about the connection between national security and national character. Strong countries are not sustained by slogans. They are sustained by people willing to carry responsibility when nobody is watching. Today is for remembering those who never had the chance to come home and build the future themselves.

It was clear in our discussion that many of the country’s biggest constraints are no longer technological. They are industrial. We know how to build advanced systems. The harder challenge is whether we can manufacture them at scale, secure the energy required to power them, and sustain the supplier base behind them. That applies equally to defense systems, space infrastructure, AI compute, grid modernization, and next-generation manufacturing. I’m grateful for my years at Gibson Dunn and for the many colleagues and friends there who helped shape my practice and career. But I’m fired up for what lies ahead. For years, my practice has focused on helping companies navigate State Attorney General investigations and enforcement actions—and the complicated intersection of law, business, policy, and politics that comes with them. At Kirkland, I have the opportunity to take that practice to an entirely different level. I have long admired what Kirkland has built in litigation. The talent is exceptional and the resources are unparalleled. But what ultimately stood out to me was the culture—a place where lawyers are encouraged to build, to be ambitious about their practices, and to work across teams to solve difficult problems for clients. I’m grateful to Kirkland Chairman Jon A. Ballis and global litigation practice leader Andrew Kassof for seeing the opportunity to build something distinctive in the State AG space—and for trusting me to help do it. I’m also joining lawyers whose careers I have admired for years. Mark Filip is synonymous with excellence in white-collar and government enforcement. And as a former four-term Illinois Attorney General, Lisa Madigan brings a perspective on State AG matters that very few lawyers anywhere can offer. The opportunity to combine their experience, Kirkland’s broader platform, and the practice I’ve built is one of the things that made this move so compelling. Closer to home, Kirkland has assembled a tremendous litigation team in Texas, including Anna Rotman, Jeremy Fielding, Kim Bueno, Kasdin Mitchell, Nicolas Thompson, and my former Gibson Dunn colleagues Andrew LeGrand, Olivia Adendorff, and Cristina Martinez Squiers, whom I’m especially glad to have the opportunity to work alongside again. I’m eager to contribute to what they’ve built, help solve our clients’ hardest problems, and create new opportunities together. State AGs are increasingly driving some of the most important disputes facing corporate America. I want Kirkland to be the first call when companies face their most consequential State AG matters.

Tanveer I. Kathawalla liked thisToday, I bid farewell to my father, Jasjit Singh. To many, he was a dynamic business leader, a visionary, a mentor, and a friend. To me, he was simply Dad. He had a rare gift: making everyone feel valued, respected, and loved. Whether in business or in life, he led with generosity, integrity, and an unwavering belief in people. He inspired countless individuals, not just through his achievements, but through the way he treated others. Dad loved life with an intensity that was impossible to miss. He embraced every adventure, every conversation, every meal, every friendship, and every moment. He adored his family, cherished his friends, and found joy in even the simplest things. Nothing was ever taken for granted. Those who knew him will remember his warmth, his energy, his sense of humour, and his ability to make everyone feel special. He had an enormous heart and shared it freely. Losing him is irreparable and so is his legacy. The way he loved and lived, will continue to inspire us and all the countless lives he touched. Thank you for everything, Dad.

Nearly 1,000 miles later, the journey ended in Golden, not far from the Denver-area neighborhood where I grew up. Last night, I had dinner with my “Super Cousin” and her partner. As I passed beneath the “Welcome to Golden” sign, I felt something that was difficult to explain. Then I realized: my mind may have known I was only visiting, but my body remembered home. The air. The sounds. The smells. The ease of being somewhere that asks no introduction from you. You breathe differently. Perhaps home is not simply where we live. It is also where our nervous system remembers that we once belonged. This afternoon, I am in flight back to Miami, and I’m ready to be there. I love the home and life I have created in the 305. Colorado holds much of my history, but Miami is where my life is happening now. There is a full fall ahead with Somos22 and Fortaleza, and my mind could easily race toward everything waiting for me. But right now, ahora mismo, I’m holding on to what this final stop reminded me: We may leave a place without losing what it gave us. And loving where we came from does not make us love where we are going home to any less. P.S. Travel lesson learned: a ten-day road trip is not the time to experiment with a new brand of flip-flops, especially when you walk several miles a day. 🙂 Somos22
