Erik Bruckner posted thisProfessional update: After much thought, I’ve made the decision to step away from Giant Step Capital to pursue a new challenge. My time here has been an incredible experience - working alongside an amazing team and partnering with visionary founders. Having great conversations about the next chapter, however nothing finalized just yet. Always happy to connect. Thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey!

Erik Bruckner posted thisI’ve been reflecting on the key trends that will shape the venture capital ecosystem for 2025. Predictions for Venture Capital in 2025: DPI Uptick Fuels LP Commitments: Distributions to Paid-In Capital (DPI) metrics are likely to show improvement, rekindling LP confidence and unlocking new commitments. IPOs Rebound Slowly: While public market conditions will improve, the IPO pipeline will still face headwinds, resulting in a gradual recovery. The Rise of Solo GPs Continues: More experienced investors will launch solo GP funds, leveraging niche expertise and stronger personal branding to raise capital independently. Family Offices Surge into VC: Family offices will increasingly embrace venture capital as a key pillar of their portfolio GP Spinouts Accelerate: Senior investors will continue to spin out of established firms to create new platforms, leading to greater diversity in the market. Secondaries Remain Hot: The secondary market will remain a vital liquidity mechanism, as GPs and LPs look to rebalance portfolios in a slower exit environment. Private Equity Enters VC Aggressively: PE firms will deepen their footprint in venture capital, attracted by high-growth sectors and earlier-stage opportunities. Deep Tech Becomes a Top LP Priority: Emerging technologies will see significant LP interest as they align with long-term value creation. Institutional LP Exposure to Emerging Managers Increases: Institutional investors will seek to diversify into emerging managers, recognizing their agility and potential for outsized returns. Favorable Tailwinds from a New Administration: Regulatory and liquidity policies under the new administration could create a more favorable environment for venture-backed companies and funds. Agree/disagree? Are there others you see on the horizon?

Erik Bruckner posted thisI have had 100s of conversations with venture LPs over last year. The prevailing sentiment is 2025 will be one of the best vintages in years. The liquidity crunch has significantly raised the bar for GPs raising capital. LPs are back to applying sound fundamentals when evaluating managers. FOMO is gone. We will only see the best managers rise to the top.

Erik Bruckner liked thisErik Bruckner liked thisAlmost every space hardware brief I've taken this year has had "ideally ex-SpaceX" somewhere in it. Sometimes written down. Usually just said out loud. This chart shows what that adds up to. K2 at 32% of headcount. Varda 28%. Impulse 27%. Here's the thing though: the ask is never really about SpaceX. It's shorthand for someone who moves at pace, owns the problem end to end, and doesn't need a process built around them. Fair enough. But when ten companies are all using the same shorthand, you're fishing one pond and paying a premium for the logo rather than the behavior. Look at the bottom of the list instead. Rocket Lab at 5.3%. Blue Origin at 4.5%. Both flying hardware, both built largely with people from somewhere else. The engineers I place who move fastest have often come from primes, defense programs, or tier-1 suppliers. They've qualified hardware under real schedule pressure. They just don't have the badge. If you're hiring right now, it's worth writing down what you actually mean by "ex-SpaceX." In my experience the list is longer than one company.

Congrats to the entire Ursa Major team! Link to the press release in comments.

Erik Bruckner liked thisErik Bruckner liked thisSo excited to share that Neal M. has been promoted to Principal! For those of you that know him, you know how well deserved this news is. He harassed me (in a loving way) and everyone I know to get me on the phone when I was searching for my first investor to join the team two years ago. He has worked tirelessly since the day he applied for the job to help me continue to build what I hope becomes a pretty special early stage firm. He has sourced a handful of incredible companies that we are lucky to be investors in over the past 24 months and I can't wait to see what he does next. I gifted him a fancy little leather check book which I forgot to take a picture of when I told him he was writing his own checks moving forward. Please join me in congratulating Neal on being the fantastic human and investor that he is! Lucky to have you Neal.

Erik Bruckner liked thisClosing my first week at Picogrid in El Segundo, I’m reflecting on why this chapter feels personal. After 30 years in Security Forces, cyber, the nuclear enterprise, AETC, and Air Force acquisition, I’ve lived this challenge—integrating sensors so commanders, Defenders, and first responders filter noise, prioritize threats, and act decisively. From design to global deployment, the pulse is vibrant and the focus clear. Thanks, Picogrid, for welcoming this high-mileage, mission-ready Chief. Shoulder to shoulder, balikatan, shana ba shana, and Ooga pa Ooga -- the mission carries on. The time is now. Keen to lean into that fight alongside these clear-eyed patriots.

Castelion is building one of the most consequential companies in modern defense tech Honored to have been the company’s first investor and part of the journey. Was fortunate to meet Bryon Hargis back in 2022 while building a thesis on hypersonics. Bryon’s vision, understanding of the problem set and urgency deeply resonated. We quickly invested, and I remember wiring the money from my mother-in-law’s kitchen over the holidays All credit to Bryon Hargis, Andrew Kreitz, CFA & Sean Pitt for their relentless effort and execution these past three years. Three pathways power modern capital formation. Reg D fuels early stage growth. Reg CF fuels community driven expansion. Reg A supports national scale and pre IPO readiness. Understanding these tools means understanding how companies actually access capital and grow within the U.S. financial system. #CapitalFormation #RegD #RegCF #RegA #BusinessGrowth All information shared is for educational and informational purposes.

Following a recent antitrust settlement, Constellation will now be the biggest wholesale power provider in the U.S., owning 55 GW of capacity. ⚡️ The antitrust complaint was filed by the U.S. Department of Justice and the state of Texas, who claimed that Constellation’s $26.6 billion acquisition of Calpine would reduce competition and lead to inflated market prices. Estimates show that costs could have risen by over $100 million annually in both ERCOT and PJM. 💵 When the deal was first approved back in July, FERC had originally required Constellation to sell four PJM-based power plants with a combined capacity of 3,550 MW. In total, the DOJ/Texas settlement now requires Constellation to sell six power plants and a minority stake in a seventh. Additional plants include: 1️⃣ Calpine’s 828-MW York 2 Energy Center, a dual-fuel plant in Delta, Pa. 2️⃣ Calpine’s 609-MW Jack A. Fusco Energy Center, a gas-fired power plant near Houston 3️⃣ Calpine’s 19-MW minority stake in the Gregory power plant, a gas-fired power plant near Corpus Christi, Texas This is the first settlement consent decree filed by the DOJ’s antitrust division pertaining to the electricity industry in roughly 14 years. What do you think of this acquisition? Share your thoughts below. Great overview of the Florida VC ecosystem 👇 What stands out is not just the ~$2.85B raised, but how distributed and specialized each region is becoming. • South Florida → crypto, fintech, LatAm access • Tampa Bay → strong early-stage pipeline • Orlando/Space Coast → deep tech, defense, space • North Florida → emerging operator-led funds Tax advantages help, but the real story is growing density of founders, angels, and operators building locally. Still early compared to SF and NY, which is the opportunity. Who are the next Florida-based funds or angels getting active?

What’s old is new. Funny to watch VCs flood back to out-of-favor business models—hardware-enabled software, marketplaces, consumer tech—which are now viewed as more defensible because AI can't easily replicate physical infrastructure, network effects, or brand.

I had a great conversation recently with Peter Lehrman on the Axial Masters in Small Business M&A podcast discussing how the lower middle market has evolved over the past couple of decades. Over the last 25 years, the ecosystem has changed dramatically. Many funds outgrew the lower middle market, while additional equity sources like independent sponsors, family offices, new LMM funds, and large funds moving ‘downstream’ have expanded the participant pool. Purchase multiples and equity contribution percentages have increased, adding pressure to returns, and the credit markets have evolved as well, impacting leverage rates and deal activity. We talked about what this shift means for private equity value creation today. At Broadwing Capital, implementing platform growth tools in alignment with founders and management teams are more important drivers of return than financial engineering. I also shared the investment thesis behind our recent acquisition of CloudScale365, Inc. and how we think about growth, culture, and stakeholder impact post-transaction. Thanks to Peter for the thoughtful discussion. If you are interested in where the lower middle market is heading, it's worth a listen. https://lnkd.in/gTaMcGAc
