Ron Carey posted thisAugust is Black Business Month, a time to recognize the entrepreneurs, employees, customers, and communities behind Black-owned businesses across the country. As a Black business owner, I know that building a company comes with both opportunity and responsibility. It means creating jobs, opening doors, supporting families, and contributing to the communities around us. It also means navigating challenges that are not always visible from the outside. The value of this month is in what happens after recognition. That support can look like hiring Black-owned companies, including them in procurement conversations, sharing their work, investing in their growth, and building relationships that extend beyond a single month. Black-owned businesses are helping shape industries, strengthen local economies, and create opportunity every day. This month is a good reminder to celebrate that work and continue supporting it throughout the year.

Ron Carey shared this17 years with one client will teach you things no brief ever could. We started working with Walmart in 2008, helping build their in-store digital signage network from the ground up. What began as a single initiative has grown into something that now reaches 140 million shoppers a week across nearly 4,000 stores and 17 channels. The work spans practically everything: custom content strategies by channel, tens of thousands of assets created and produced, playbooks built from real experience, and the ongoing discipline of managing campaigns across one of the most complex retail environments in the world. What we've learned is that when someone is already in the store, already in motion, the content that works is the most relevant. Clear, direct, and genuinely useful in that moment. Our longest-standing client relationship is also our most complex. https://lnkd.in/etxWGf5s

Ron Carey shared thisI often reflect on the principles of leadership: the timeless philosophies that serve as the foundation, and the contemporary leadership styles that have adapted to today's workforce, industries, and society. That is why this profile of Tru Pettigrew caught my attention. Successful leadership must foster a supportive environment, create clarity, and accept accountability. It's not just about directing a business. It’s about safeguarding the humanity within it. At Tilt Creative + Production, my personal focus has always been on how businesses and humanity intersect. My goal is to ensure our work has a broader, positive impact on the lives of our employees and our clients. To me, a supportive environment isn't just a cultural perk; it’s a space where we actively champion diverse initiatives and build truly inclusive environments for everyone on our team, and in our audience. As leaders, we have an obligation to provide reassurance during times of disruption, adding efficiencies while preserving free-ranging creativity, and giving our people the freedom and confidence to innovate and take risks. That's where brilliant campaigns are born. The Genesis Of Leadership: Three Principles That Every Leader Needs Right NowThe Genesis Of Leadership: Three Principles That Every Leader Needs Right Now

That collaboration and experimentation can spark new thinking and push an idea into new territory.Smarter, Not Harder: Production That Protects the CreativeSmarter, Not Harder: Production That Protects the Creative

Ron Carey shared thisGreat content looks simple when it's finished. Behind it, strategy, creative, production, and post all have to work together. That's why process matters. At Tilt, we're built as one connected team with no silos and unnecessary slowdowns. We help brands create high-volume content without losing the craft, clarity, or emotion that gives the work its punch. Technology, including AI and next generation tools, is changing what's possible. Experience still decides what's worth walking through. The best work comes from blending new tools with old school craft. That's how smart ideas turn into content that sticks.

Ron Carey posted thisA company’s impact is measured by more than what it sells. It's also measured by what it supports. More brands are thinking seriously about how their dollars, platforms, and influence can create value beyond the transaction. That can mean investing in local communities, supporting education, creating opportunities for underrepresented groups, or partnering with organizations that serve people who need it most. Customers are paying attention to what companies say, but they are also paying attention to where companies show up. A purpose-driven business is not about making every action a campaign. It's making sure the business has a clear connection to the people and communities around it. When companies give back in thoughtful, consistent ways, they build trust.

Ron Carey posted thisBeing a small business owner teaches you to think about impact in a very practical way. Every decision feels closer to the people it affects. A new client can create opportunity for the team. A difficult season can test your resilience. A good hire can change the energy of the business. A strong partnership can open doors you could not have reached alone. That closeness is one of the hardest parts of ownership, but it is also one of the most meaningful. You are building jobs, relationships, culture, trust, and hopefully something that contributes to the community around you. For me, small business ownership has always been about the people the business allows us to support, serve, and grow with.

Ron Carey shared thisThe growth of Black owned businesses is encouraging. The gap that remains is still significant. Brookings’ latest update to the Black Business Parity Dashboard shows that Black owned employer businesses surpassed 200,000 for the first time in 2023, generating $249 billion in revenue and supporting more than 1.8 million jobs. Representation in business ownership still does not reflect the full potential of Black entrepreneurship across many markets. For those of us who have built companies, this is a lived reality. Access to capital, access to networks, access to procurement opportunities, and access to decision makers all shape which businesses get to grow. If companies say they value diverse suppliers, inclusive growth, and community impact, those values have to show up in how they spend, who they partner with, and how they open doors. Black business growth is not only good for Black entrepreneurs. It creates jobs, builds stronger communities, and expands the economy. The shifting landscape for Black-owned businesses: An update to the Black Business Parity DashboardThe shifting landscape for Black-owned businesses: An update to the Black Business Parity Dashboard

Ron Carey reacted on thisIn such a “specialized field”, never did I think we’d be lucky enough for her to take me up on my personal “college savings plan/tuition assistance” deal (Get loans, after college, live with me, rent free while you pay them off). There are 2 D1 programs within 50 miles of my home; one, my Alma Mater (and favorite school) didn’t have an opening but the other, our rival did! I’m proud of you Gillie, they’re lucky to have you!Ron Carey reacted on thisI’m so excited to share that I’ve officially joined the VCU Women’s Lacrosse program as an Assistant Coach! I’m incredibly proud to be from Richmond and so grateful for the opportunity to start this next chapter back home, in a place that means so much to me. A huge thank you to Coach Nicole Flores and the VCU Athletics staff for this opportunity and for believing in me. I am beyond excited to continue growing in the game I love from the coaching side.

I checked off bucket-list items — walking El Camino de Santiago in Spain and running my first half-marathon, and a second one since! I reconnected with my network, my family, my friends, and myself. I learned how a change of pace can be healing after years of high-intensity work, and I ventured into consulting by launching Ultreia (from Latin, meaning "onwards" — a salutation pilgrims use on El Camino). I also went back to the classroom for a 6-month AI-for-Executives program, which wrapped up in July with a week on MIT's Cambridge campus. As I begin a new chapter in corporate Procurement with Specialty Building Products, I'm grateful for every exchange and lesson from these past months, for the support of those who walked alongside me, and for the encouragement of those who cheered me on from a distance. Onwards — toward high-impact work, meaningful connections, and a more holistic way of living and working.

Ron Carey reacted on thisRon Carey reacted on thisFor nearly 15 years, I sent Tim Cook a weekly report every Sunday night on the global App Store business. My team and I packed it with data, charts, and commentary on what was happening around the world. Most weeks: silence. Every so often, a probing question would come back about a specific metric or market. Or, better, a note congratulating us on a strong quarter. Those reports taught me a lot about discipline and accountability. No matter where I was in the world, I sent that report. Tim expected his leaders to know their businesses cold. Whenever I put anything in front of him, I needed to understand not just the numbers, but what was driving them and what we were doing about it. His expectations made me a much better leader. On my last day at Apple, Tim and I had a 10-minute 1:1 scheduled. We talked for 30. Reflecting on my 21 years at the company, he told me my greatest accomplishment wasn’t helping build a $1 trillion App Store ecosystem or helping scale the business to more than one billion customers. It was the team I had built and the leaders I had developed who were ready to step up after I left. That meant the world to me. We took this photo together right after that conversation. Today is Tim’s last day as CEO of Apple. Much has been written about what he and the company accomplished under his leadership. But perhaps his greatest legacy is the one he taught me to value: the people he developed, the culture he shaped, and the leaders ready to carry it forward. I’ll always be grateful I got to be a part of it.

Ron Carey liked thisPresident Scott, thank you for the invitation and for the incredibly warm welcome from the entire Albany State University community. I left Albany State every bit as inspired as I hope the students were. And knowing that the conversations are continuing after I left campus means everything to me. If you love your HBCU, show it. Give. Mentor. Hire. Open doors. Come back. Pour into the next generation. Thank you, President Scott, and thank you ASU. The Golden Rams will always have a special place in my heart. 💙💛💚💛Ron Carey liked this#AlbanyState welcomed nationally recognized entrepreneur and community leader Devon M. We could have mentioned her seventeen years here and the many ways she has helped shape this company. And we will. But first: WE MADE HER PRESIDENT!!! 🎉 From joining Spurrier Group as a media buyer in 2009 to becoming a driving force in how we plan, perform and grow, Jennifer has been an important part of our story. She brings thoughtful leadership, a perfectly timed sense of humor and the calm confidence of a Gen X-er who has seen some things. Most importantly, she leads with sincerity, empathy and a genuine commitment to the people around her. Now, she’ll help lead Spurrier Group into what comes next. Congratulations, Jennifer.
