Robby Stein shared thisOne of my favorite parts of Google I/O was meeting the student builders shaping AI's future. Alongside Lila Ibrahim and Christopher Phillips, I had the privilege to check out some incredible student projects at a science fair-style “solve-a-thon” event at the Google campus. It was awesome to see students in action as they vibe-coded fully functional apps, using their creativity to build everything from holistic wellbeing trackers, to an app that helps connect local food providers with communities in need. I also sat down to chat with Majeed Khan and Hyunjun Jo about how AI Mode in Search is helping anyone become a builder, and opening up new ways to learn. As Hyunjun put it, students don’t just need quick facts, they need to understand the thinking and concepts behind them. The future of tech is in great hands. Thanks to everyone who joined us! 🙌

Robby Stein shared thisAs we wrap #GoogleIO 2026, taking a moment to reflect on a year of incredible growth. At I/O last year, a small but determined team launched AI Mode with a massive goal: to build a deeply knowledgeable search experience bringing together the best of a search engine with the best of AI. Fast forward to today and AI Mode already has over one billion monthly users, a testament to how helpful people are finding it. People are thinking less about how to ask their questions – they’re just asking them because they know how capable Search truly is. At I/O today, it was a deep honor to represent the team on stage as we enter the next era of Search. It's now easier than ever to ask anything on your mind right from main Search and get to powerful AI tools and experiences. With Gemini 3.5 Flash’s powerful agentic capabilities and the power of Antigravity, Search can do more for you than ever before. Here’s a rundown of what we announced: 1️⃣ The Search box got its biggest upgrade in 25 years! Our new intelligent Search box now expands as you type to accommodate longer queries and offers AI-powered suggestions to help you ask anything on your mind. Get seamless access to AI tools and easily add text, images, files, videos or Chrome tabs. 2️⃣ Gemini 3.5 Flash is now the default model for AI Mode globally. It delivers frontier performance for agents and coding, unlocking the helpfulness of AI at the scale of Search. 3️⃣ We're bringing Antigravity capabilities to Search, expanding our generative UI responses so you can get on-the-fly dynamic layouts and interactive visuals tailored to your unique queries. And for ongoing tasks, Search will be able to build you custom experiences, like dashboards or trackers that you can come back to and make progress on (like a fitness tracker or a weekend planner!). 4️⃣ With information agents, personalized AI agents will work for you in the background, 24/7. Your agents will intelligently reason across info on the web and surface updates related so you can find exactly what you need – at just the right moment. 5️⃣ And we’re expanding Personal Intelligence in AI Mode to more people in nearly 200 countries and territories, across 98 languages. Plus, you’ll soon be able to connect Personal Intelligence to Google Calendar for recommendations that seamlessly fit into your schedule. I can’t wait to see how these new capabilities will help people do more than ever with Search.

Robby Stein shared thisToday, we’re expanding Personal Intelligence for AI Mode in Search in the U.S. 🚀 This feature has totally changed how I use AI in Search. Here’s how it works: 1️⃣ Opt in to connect apps like Gmail and Google Photos. Search connects your info to give you responses that uniquely match your specific context and interests. 2️⃣ Start asking for things like ideas and recommendations where this is particularly helpful. For example: I wanted new podcast ideas and Personal Intelligence in AI Mode gave me spot-on recos on AI and product building shows that are similar to some of my favorites (hey @lennysan!). It even found some unexpected options around dad life working in tech. 🎧 This was designed with your privacy and transparency in mind. Connecting to Gmail and Google Photos is secure and it’s off by default. 🔒 If you’re interested in opting in, here is a direct link to update your settings: https://lnkd.in/gNvtAbnw

Robby Stein shared thisThe most helpful search experience doesn’t just know the world’s information – it brings together that global knowledge with insights that are uniquely relevant to your world. That’s why today, we’re bringing Personal Intelligence to AI Mode in Google Search. By opting in to connect apps like Gmail and Google Photos, you’ll start to unlock a search experience that understands your reality, not just your general interests. You can skip the part where you have to continue to re-explain your itinerary or preferences – AI Mode intelligently factors them in right from the start. I’ve been a power user of Personal Intelligence with Gmail and Google Photos enabled, and it’s helped me pinpoint new things that I wouldn’t have considered or discovered before – like recommendations for family activities on an upcoming trip. It also helped me find an awesome pair of new shoes! The ability to connect AI Mode to your Gmail and Google Photos is rolling out as a Labs feature for Google AI Pro & Ultra subscribers in the U.S. (Eligible subs will automatically have access to the feature as it becomes available). I’m really excited to get this out to more people and look forward to hearing what you think. https://lnkd.in/g5Bq6f-M

Robby Stein shared thisIt’s been a big week for Search. Rhiannon Bell and I joined Logan Kilpatrick on the latest episode of Release Notes to talk about how we’re bringing the frontier capabilities made possible with Gemini 3 in Search – and how they unlock new Generative UI experiences in AI Mode. We talk about how the model is learning to "think like a designer"—deciding in real-time when to code up an interactive simulation (like demonstrating lift on an airplane wing) or when to visualize data dynamically, to help you learn more deeply and comprehensively. It’s about moving from a static interface to one that builds itself around your question. Catch the full conversation here: https://lnkd.in/grmnnUQf

Robby Stein shared thisAnother exciting Search update has landed. Just a few weeks after shipping our most intelligent model, Gemini 3 Pro, in Search, we’re rolling out Gemini 3 Flash as the default model for AI Mode today. 3 Flash brings the incredible reasoning capabilities of Gemini 3 Pro, at the speed you expect of Search. So AI Mode better interprets your toughest, multi-layered questions – considering each of your constraints or requirements – and provides a visually digestible response along with helpful links to dive deeper on the web. We’re also expanding access to our Pro models in Search, bringing powerful visual creation tools to even more people. Gemini 3 Pro is now available to everyone in the U.S., unlocking a completely new visual experience that adapts to you – building interactive tools and simulations on the fly, based on your specific question. Nano Banana Pro, our state-of-the-art image generation model, is also expanding to more people in the U.S. For both of our Pro models, Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers will have higher usage limits. I’m constantly blown away by the teams that collaborated to bring this to life in Search. Can’t wait for more people to experience Gemini 3! https://lnkd.in/gHXKRKq6

Robby Stein shared thisHelping people find information on the web and connect to sources they trust is a huge part of how we’re building the future of Search. I’m excited to share product updates we announced: * Expanding Preferred Sources: We’re rolling out Preferred Sources, a feature to tailor your Top Stories results, to people around the world. We’ve heard positive feedback from consumers and websites alike. People have selected a wide range of outlets – nearly 90,000 unique sources, including local blogs and global news outlets – and when someone picks a preferred source, they click to that site twice as much on average. Preferred Sources will be available to English-language users globally in the coming days, with expansion to all supported languages early next year. * Prioritizing Your Subscriptions: To help you easily spot content from sources you subscribe to, we’re launching a feature that highlights links from these publications and prioritizes them in a dedicated carousel. This feature launches first in the Gemini app soon, with AI Overviews and AI Mode to follow. * Improving Inline Links: In AI Mode, we’re increasing the number of inline links and adding context on why a source is helpful – because we know that people are more likely to click links when they have more context. * Upgrading Web Guide: We updated our Web Guide experiment in Labs – which uses AI to surface and organize the most useful, hard-to-find web links for your most complex searches – to be twice as fast and to appear on the “All” tab for opted-in users. And the Web tab has been upgraded to deliver even more relevant links by deeply analyzing 5x web content. Robby Stein shared thisToday we launched Gemini 3, our most intelligent model, in Google Search, starting with AI Mode. This is the first time we’ve brought our latest Gemini model to Search on day one, and I’m really excited to bring our most advanced technology to people faster than ever. Our vision for Search is to be able to ask whatever’s on your mind. With its state-of-the-art reasoning, deep multimodal understanding, and powerful agentic coding capabilities, Gemini 3 grasps unprecedented depth and nuance. So you can ask your hardest questions, and AI Mode will understand your intent and connect you with highly relevant content from across the web. Gemini 3 with generative layout in Search also takes us one step further by reimagining what a helpful response looks like. With new generative UI capabilities, AI Mode can now dynamically respond with visual layouts and interactive simulations – completely on the fly. Gemini 3 Pro is available directly within AI Mode’s drop-down menu, and is rolling out today for Google AI Pro & Ultra subscribers in the U.S, and soon to everyone in the U.S. Really proud of the work across many teams to bring this frontier model to Search, and excited for you to give it a try!

Robby Stein reacted on thisRobby Stein reacted on thisExcited to share my next chapter: I’m returning to Google after 15 years (!) to lead product management for real-time communications—Google Meet and Google Voice. I’m thrilled to work alongside a world-class team building the future of how people connect, share, and collaborate. With everything now possible through AI and Google’s unique ability to power the future of work, the opportunities ahead are massive. This transition also marks the end of nearly a decade working with one of the great entrepreneurs in the world: Marc Lore. Marc, thank you for being such an incredible boss, mentor, and friend. I’ll be based in Google’s NYC office and can’t wait to get started this week. If you see someone who looks like me from 15 years ago but with gray hair, come say hi!

Robby Stein reacted on thisRobby Stein reacted on thisI’m excited to share that I've joined Google Cloud to build the future of Enterprise AI! In running product for ChatGPT Enterprise this past year, I sat in many rooms with CEOs of the world's biggest companies. Half their questions were about productivity, how fast they could move, and what their people could do now. The other half were some version of what will AI do to my business, beyond productivity? I’m thrilled to join an organization focused on tackling the most critical problems enterprises face in this new paradigm: from compute automation, to autonomous cyber defense to vertical enterprise solutions and core productivity. These are challenges that require rebuilding enterprise workflows from the ground up, and Google is one of the only places on earth with every piece needed to solve this problem: the frontier lab, the data, the distribution, and decades spent earning the trust of the enterprises that run the world - nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 are using Gemini Enterprise. I couldn’t be more excited to build this with my former OpenAI colleages/friends: Reah Miyara, Alexandre R., Matthew Knight, Nate Gonzalez, Ryan Lopopolo, and Yaming Lin who are also joining the Cloud AI team. 🚀 If you’re excited by this mission and the next frontier, come work with me: goo.gle/4qBhgg1

Robby Stein reacted on thisRobby Stein reacted on thisWow. TIME and Statista just ranked The Garage at Northwestern University as the #1 University Incubator in the country on their inaugural America's Best Incubators & Accelerators list. I have known since I joined The Garage in 2019 how special of a place it is, and how big of an impact our programming and community has on the students who pass through. What's most important to me about this ranking is the methodology: in addition to data on our startups and input from expert investors and founders, they also heavily weighted alumni evaluations of every incubator on the list. This recognition validates two of my core philosophies around university entrepreneurship: 1. Accessibility. Let everyone in. Don't gate keep. You never know where the next great innovator is going to come from, so don't limit opportunities to MBAs and engineers. Any student, from any background and any level of experience can access The Garage and our resources. 2. Focus on the individual, not the venture. Ideas come and go. Focusing admittance based on the perceived quality of a startup idea ignores the most important factor: the individual. Some of the most successful startups from The Garage started with a completely different (and clearly unsustainable) idea. Students also benefit from entrepreneurship even if their venture doesn't ultimately succeed. Success for us is not that every student raises a billion dollars for their startup; it's that they learn, grow, find self awareness about what they're exceptional at, and leave with confidence and agency, regardless of the outcome of any venture they worked on. I'm incredibly grateful for the support we receive from Northwestern University and our donors, alumni, mentors, and especially - the team at The Garage. Thank you.

Robby Stein reacted on thisI'm incredibly grateful to share that I've been selected as a recipient of the 2026 CRI Lloyd J. Old STAR Award. This award provides an exciting opportunity to continue our work developing pathology- and AI-based biomarkers of response to cancer immunotherapy and ultimately help bring more personalized treatment decisions into routine care. Congratulations to all of the outstanding awardees, and thank you to the Cancer Research Institute (CRI) for this incredible honor! #CancerResearch #Immunotherapy #Pathology #DigitalPathology #AI #PrecisionMedicineRobby Stein reacted on thisCRI is proud to announce the 2026 class of Lloyd J. Old STARs- five bold scientists pushing the boundaries of immunotherapy and reimagining what’s possible in the fight against cancer. Rooted in CRI’s exceptional track record of identifying and supporting people who have had a major impact in immunotherapy, these grants are not tied to a specific research project, but rather support outstanding researchers based on the quality and promise of their overall work. “These are people who are hitting their stride scientifically and career-wise, and this is where you really want to put some jet fuel in the tank,” describes CRI Scientific Advisory Council Associate Director, Dr. E. Very excited to be joining Google again today after an almost 12-year hiatus, this time to work on AI responses in Search 🎉 I’ve been watching the evolution of Search and AI from the outside for a long time, and I can’t imagine a more exciting moment to be returning to Google and helping build what comes next. A few weeks ago, I made the bittersweet decision to say goodbye to an incredible second adventure at Meta. I’m grateful to the many teammates, partners, and leaders I had the chance to work with there and to everyone who bet on me along the way 🙏 Feeling grateful for the journey so far, energized for what’s ahead, and excited to put my Noogler hat back on and build 👷♂️ 🚀

I’ve learned the hard way: hustle doesn’t beat ambiguity—systems do. When I’m shipping in high-ambiguity environments (new product, shifting requirements, multiple stakeholders), I’ve found that “working harder” rarely fixes the chaos. What does help is treating delivery as three lightweight systems that reinforce each other: 1) Scope system (make the outcome explicit) A short PRD that answers: what problem are we solving, for whom, and how will we know it worked? If the success metric isn’t written down, you end up debating opinions instead of iterating on evidence. 2) Execution system (make progress cheap) A single source of truth backlog with epics → small tickets → clear acceptance criteria. My rule: if it isn’t in the backlog with an owner and a date/sprint, it doesn’t exist. That’s how you avoid “verbal tasks” and quiet drops across parallel workstreams. 3) Quality system (make “done” real) “Done” isn’t “merged.” It’s: acceptance criteria met, edge cases considered, observability in place, and a clear path for rollback/triage if something goes sideways. Quality gates don’t slow teams down—lack of them does, because rework and production thrash are the real velocity killers. None of these systems are heavy. But together, they turn ambiguity into a repeatable loop: define → ship → observe → learn. Curious: what’s the simplest system you’ve seen that keeps teams shipping without losing quality?
