John Soppe reposted thisJohn Soppe reposted thisMissed opportunities are costly. We've all been there—pouring resources into campaigns, only to wonder if we're truly reaching our target audience. That's why we're excited to introduce the Audience Reach Optimizer (ARO) at scale! ARO helps you pinpoint underexposed households, optimize your budget, and extend your reach across multiple screens. ARO works by: 🔹 Using privacy-compliant household exposure data from our partners MediaRadar/Vivvix to uncover households that are missing or underexposed from broadcast campaigns. 🔹 Leveraging Spectrum Reach’s proprietary data to identify media share-shift opportunities to improve audience coverage. 🔹 Optimizing budget allocation to extend reach across Spectrum Reach’s multiscreen TV and streaming inventory. The results speak for themselves! Take Matter Brothers Furniture in Florida. They used ARO to identify inefficiencies in their broadcast campaign and reallocate spend to high-propensity geographies. The outcome? A 10-15% sales lift compared to local industry benchmarks. 👉 Read the full story in our latest press release to see how ARO is delivering impact for brands like Matter Brothers Furniture: https://lnkd.in/eHX9fein #MarketingOptimizatinon #AudienceReachOptimizer #SpectrumReach #TVAdvertising #Data #SmartAdvertising

John Soppe reposted thisJohn Soppe reposted thisThis morning, AdExchanger published an insightful piece highlighting a critical challenge in the Connected TV space—premium publishers increasingly bundling their streaming inventory in opaque ways that limit advertiser visibility. Rather than providing app and show-level transparency within the bid stream—where it can be actioned—advertisers are often left with fragmented, one-off reports that offer little opportunity for strategic optimization. By adopting these black-box models, publishers are inadvertently undermining their own value. Their most significant asset—the premium content they produce—is being devalued when advertisers cannot effectively align their investments with the programming that resonates most with their audiences. The reality is that advertisers are willing to pay higher CPMs for impressions with full content transparency because it allows them to make more informed decisions and, ultimately, drive better performance. This principle has long been the foundation of linear TV, where show-level buying had created a thriving, demand-driven ecosystem rooted in transparency and accountability. At Rain the Growth Agency, we’ve seen firsthand how transparency fuels success in CTV. By leveraging show & channel level data and aligning our digital buying strategies with the programming that has proven effective in our clients’ linear campaigns, we’re driving significant performance gains. And are willing to pay higher cpms than we otherwise might. We’re working with partners like Spectrum Reach, Samsung Ads, fuboTV Network & DIRECTV which provide the transparency needed at the show & network level to make data-driven investment decisions that maximize ROI through our custom algorithms & buying strategies. A notable example is Alexander Groysman at Spectrum Reach, who has led the charge in developing one of the most comprehensive and well-structured content metadata sets in the industry. His work has set a new standard for transparency, enabling advertisers to better understand performance at a granular level and optimize their spend accordingly. As streaming networks attempt to replicate the playbook of tech companies, they risk overlooking a crucial difference: they are not technology companies. They lack the same product offerings, incentives, and advertiser appeal that drive digital platforms’ success. In chasing the tech model, they may ultimately lose what has always differentiated them—high-quality, trusted content that brands are eager to invest in when they can do so with confidence and clarity. Publishers who prioritize transparency stand to gain the most, while those who don't risk leaving money on the table and eroding advertiser trust. It’s time to rethink the approach before it’s too late. Link to article in comments.

Given it finished building its programmatic stack, this is reflective of a transitional moment. Spotify's ad revenue grew 1% in Q2. The stock fell 6%. The coverage says Spotify cannot crack the ads code. I think the 1% is two numbers pretending to be one: a growing programmatic line and a shrinking direct-sales line. CFO Christian Luiga disclosed that programmatic channels represented nearly 40% of ad revenue in Q2, up from 30% in Q1. A 10-point mix shift in one quarter. Co-CEO Alex Norström says Spotify now runs 99% of impressions on its own ad server and counts 33,000 active advertisers, up 60% year over year. Spotify finished optimizing price and stabilized the direct channel, indicating tha the rebuild is essentially done. However, Spotify has guided to ad acceleration before and missed, and audio has traded at lower CPMs than visual formats for years. It earned that skepticism. I think Spotify actually fixed the infrastructure, but demand at the scale the math requires hasn't arrived. If a client brought me the Spotify earnings, I'd ask what metric they're actually reading. The 1% measures the cost of a 10-point mix shift completed in 90 days — not the health of the ad business. The real number is the gap between €0.90 ARPU and what comparable platforms earn per user. On a stack where the infrastructure cost is already sunk, closing that gap is high-margin upside the market hasn't priced in. That read is what I would bring into the room, and yes, that is the plug.

John Soppe liked thisJohn Soppe liked thisGoogle, Meta, and Amazon collected north of $500 billion in ad revenue last year. I wonder if anyone on the agency side has tried to renegotiate. I went on the AdTechGod ®️ podcast a couple of weeks ago. We covered The Trade Desk's organizational evolution, mid-size agency M&A, AI and the agency business model, and whether advertising has gotten so focused on measurement that it forgot the value of being remembered. Through all of it, one question kept pulling me back: Can agencies monetize being an intermediary between brands and the platforms that own a growing share of the global economy? Pool P&G's spend with the rest of the agency's client base, and you have spend that spans dozens of verticals and hundreds of brands with more aggregate spend than any single advertiser brings alone. This may be a hot take, but one hypothesis is that scale might be the most valuable capability agencies have, if they can figure out how to price it. I don't know the answer, and I said that on the podcast. The platforms have run the system for 15 years. LLMs are entering the mix. I think the renegotiation question is worth asking out loud, even without a clean answer. If anyone has a view on this one, I'd like to hear it. AdTechGod has been putting sharp ad tech voices on the mic for a while. I'm honored that they included mine. Full breakdown below, and the full-length pod is in the comments.Google, Meta, and Amazon book roughly half a trillion dollars of ad revenue a year. John Soppe liked thisJohn Soppe liked thisAfter 8 incredible years, today is my last day at Spectrum Reach. I got to lead the best product development organization in the business, building and scaling ad products through the most transformative stretch this industry has ever seen. A few things I'm proud of: 📺 Overseeing the ad tech stack that powered over $12B in ad spend for more than 100,000 advertisers throughout my tenure 🏆 Filing four patents and taking home over a dozen awards for innovations that moved the industry 📣 Advocacy and thought leadership that helped shape narratives and policy on transparency, consumer privacy, and piracy 🤝 Building partnerships with some of the most innovative technology companies in the space But none of that is what I'll remember most. It's the people. The relationships, the leaders I watched grow, and the teams that made every win possible. This was the most rewarding chapter of my career, and I'm grateful to everyone who was part of it. As for next steps, I'm going to take some much needed time with my family. Then I'll be back to announce the next chapter. All I can say for now is that it's out of this world. 🚀

John Soppe liked thisJohn Soppe liked thisYouTube is changing what counts as a view effective 8/24/26. Starting August 24, YouTube counts a view the moment a video starts playing, from the first frame, across every format globally. Long-form and Live now match the Shorts standard set last year. The old metric survives as “Engaged views” in Analytics > Advanced Mode. Monetization does not change - earnings still run on Engaged Shorts views and Engaged Watch Hours, and the YPP thresholds are simply renamed to “qualified Shorts views” and “qualified watch hours.” Three things that actually matter: 1. Views are now an impressions metric, not a viewership metric. That is genuinely useful for cross-platform work. A YouTube view will finally mean roughly the same as an Instagram or TikTok view means, which makes normalized benchmarking easier. The downside? It also means a view no longer tells you anyone really watched, just that it started in someone's screen. 2. Your time series breaks on 8/24. Any year-over-year or period-over-period long-form comparison spanning that date needs reviewing, or a big asterisk. 3. Check your contracts. If you have sponsorship, influencer, or content deals with view guarantees or view-based CPMs, those numbers get materially easier to hit on August 24 with zero additional humans watching anything. Both sides should know that before the next invoice. YouTube’s framing says this helps creators express their true scale and value to brand partners. Read that plainly: the number going up is the point. Exposure is not attention, and it should not be priced like it is. Feel free to message me with any questions you might have around this major change!

John Soppe liked thisJohn Soppe liked thisthis tweet from yesterday is going viral on twitter + I was sent it by countless folks who know where I stand - in AI startups, the sales-to-GTM re-branding is a necessary and refreshing one for the profession, rant below: in early-stage AI (seed thru series D) - where we play and our candidates/clients are - the best teams are calling their sales teams GTM it's not just cosmetic. the role is a lot more fluid: → they're not just closing, they're also building → they're helping with marketing, post-sales, etc → they're swiss army knives who can be thrown into different areas of the business words matter what you call the role changes how customers see you. and it changes how the person in the seat sees themselves a GTM builder optimizes for the whole motion, not just an old-school coin-operated rep i'm super bullish on this, even though i know it splits the room + think it's a great move for the profession let's worry about higher value things like creating pipeline and closing deals i think part of the folks calling it bogus or pretentious are either a little confused/not in the know or just a little bit mad that they got dinged from an org that called their sales team "GTM"

John Soppe liked thisJohn Soppe liked thisGoogle gave PMAX - Total Marketing Partner an off-switch for the first time in 4 years. 2 checkboxes, both pre-set to keep PMax on, in a limited pilot with no disclosed criteria. 3 agencies asked for access and were told no. The trade coverage says Google is listening. I think the product design says something different. I think PMax was built to remove the advertiser's routing decision. The opt-out adds back network-level control over two surfaces (Search Partners and GDN). Bidding, audience selection, and budget allocation don't change. The checkboxes (verifiable) may cost Google nothing. If the excluded inventory was low-value, spend redirects to owned properties. I suspect the access rationing (not verifiable) is where the revenue protection sits. Everyone else keeps routing through all networks. The trade coverage says Google is responding to ChatGPT. I think the scale gap says otherwise: 7,378 ChatGPT advertisers (Adthena, July 2026) vs 500,000 on AI Max alone (Schindler, Q2 call), $63.3B in search revenue, up 17% YoY. Google shipped the checkboxes the same quarter it debuted Buyer Direct via Google Ad Manager, which runs 90% of publisher ad serving (court finding). One move gives a headline while the other deepens the infrastructure the court is reviewing. I think the DOJ remedy ruling explains the timing better than ChatGPT does. Get into the alpha. Turn the networks off. You finally have a number on what Search Partners and GDN were doing to your CPA inside PMax. I wrote about what the product design reveals about how much control Google is willing to return.Google Gave PMax an Off-Switch for the First Time in Four Years. John Soppe reacted on thisJohn Soppe reacted on thisAt the end of this year, my time as an Assemblymember comes to a close. I'll have a lot more to say about the honor of representing the people of the 73rd Assembly District when we get closer. But one of the joys of this job has been working with incredible people, all of whom are now on the same timeline for finding their next place of work. If you are looking to work with some insanely talented people, I have some recommendations for you. And whether or not you're hiring, can you like/reshare this post to help others find them? Victoria Mazzola has run my District Office for the past several years and is one of the most loyal, dedicated people I've ever worked with. Over two decades in legislative offices, she's owned communications, scheduling, casework, newsletters, and general office administration, routinely managing 500+ emails a day and 50+ meetings a week while making independent judgment calls on sensitive matters. Any executive who brings her on will be getting a proven, trusted partner. If you or anyone you know is looking for an excellent Executive Assistant, please reach out. Ari Gershengorn has led my legislative efforts for the last three sessions, presiding over the passage of dozens of bills as our office consistently ranked among the most effective in Albany. His particular expertise is AI legislation, where he passed strongest-in-the-country laws on frontier model safety (the RAISE Act), AI-generated image labeling, and chatbot safety. He also served as a key policy and strategy advisor on my campaign for Congress. Resourceful, energetic, and dedicated, he would be an asset to anyone working to enact impactful policy or get the right people into office. Right before I launched my campaign for Congress, I hired Julie Roland as my District Director. She left the US Navy as a Lieutenant Commander after a decade of flying helicopters to move to New York, immediately establishing herself as a beloved member of our government office, campaign team, and community (as anyone who has ever attended one of our community board meetings can attest). She holds both a J.D. and an LL.M. in Global Business Law and is a stellar writer and public speaker who can address nearly any policy area with authority. I’d trust her to represent me anywhere, any team would be lucky to have her, and I wouldn't bet against seeing her name on a ballot herself one day, either!

If your MMM vendor says they can isolate the lift from individual creatives, don’t be afraid to press on this. Ask them: - Are you using actual modeled lift estimates for each creative, or just allocating channel-level lift proportionally by spend? - What assumptions are you making to estimate creative-level impact, and can you show me how sensitive your results are to those assumptions? - Can you show a prior-predictive or posterior-predictive check that validates creative-level signal detection? Media mix models are top-down models. They operate on aggregate outcomes (revenue, conversions, etc.) and aggregated inputs like spend or impressions. For the model to detect lift, the creative has to move the needle more than the system’s natural noise. And that bar is higher than most people think. In most cases, a new creative variant (a new background color, a new headline, or a different CTA) doesn’t drive a big enough delta in sales to stand out above baseline noise. So when a model spits out “Creative A had 3.4x ROI and Creative B had 1.9x,” you should ask: did those creatives actually drive statistically distinct outcomes? Or did the model just estimate that they did? Sometimes vendors fudge it: dividing lift by spend, or filling in gaps with untested priors. That can be fine as long as they’re honest about what’s being modeled and what’s being assumed. But don’t confuse assumptions for evidence. And don’t let a modeler (Recast or anyone else!) tell you they’re seeing something the data can’t actually support.

Reworked LinkedIn Post: AI hasn’t pushed SEO off the cliff, it has actually tossed it more relevance. New rules of the game? Win the ranking, and bag the citation. Google looks pretty flexible to search, but an AI Overview has seemingly hijacked the organic results’ top spot, even beating the ads at times. And all this is possible for about 21% of all keywords, Ahrefs reports. So, who wins the early consideration depends a lot on AI overviews now. Earlier you dropped from position #3 to #7, you were losing visibility. Now, if you’re not part of the AI answer at all, you’re off the visibility radar. That’s where the wind blows. Space constraints? Head over to the link to learn more about what I’m alluding to: [https://lnkd.in/de7B_qki] #SEO #AI #DigitalMarketing #MarketingTrends

Nebraska’s age-appropriate design code going operative is another example of where subscription teams can get surprised: compliance is now embedded in product design choices. Defaults, notifications, targeting, engagement mechanics—things that often sit in product/growth—are increasingly being evaluated through a regulatory lens when minors are involved. If you have any meaningful teen usage (even if you’re not “for kids”), it may be worth asking: Do we know when we’re dealing with minors—and if so, do our defaults change accordingly? 🧠 The visibility gap: not all CTV is what it claims to be CTV promises precision. But much of it isn’t even visible. In open market buys, up to 67% of CTV signals are unreliable: - 60% of bid requests contain no usable program-level signal - 7% carry shallow or inaccurate genre data - Only 33% include meaningful context Even worse: - App-level buying and Deal IDs don’t solve it - Up to 20% of “CTV” delivery can land on tablet or desktop 👉 Not all CTV is TV. That distinction matters. And performance metrics don’t fix this. Completion rate can mislead: a fireplace app or background podcast “completes” just like a premium show. 💡 What actually closes the gap? 1. Authenticated CTV delivery (excluding Fake CTV) 2. Human exposure to verified content 3. Pre-bid filtering and signal quality controls This is where broadcaster environments stand out: 1. known, curated content 2. verified audiences 3. strong program-level signals They don’t just deliver reach - they deliver visibility you can trust Visibility is not a technical detail. It’s a performance lever. 👉 What drives your choice between open market scale and private marketplace visibility? 👉 👉 Curious about the underlying data on CTV signals? Comment ‘Signals’ and I’ll send you the full report via DM.
