So does anyone who has spent decades building something worth being proud of. 🎨 There's a reason watching someone work at a craft is so compelling. The closer you look the more you see. What appeared to be a simple surface reveals extraordinary detail. Layer after layer after layer, each one adding depth to something that from a distance looked straightforward. I think about reputation work this way. A digital presence can look like one thing from the outside, a name, a profile, a search result. But look closely and the layers appear. The narrative that was established years ago and hasn't kept pace with where someone actually is today. The brand story that grew in one direction while the online presence stayed frozen somewhere in the past. The search results that tell an incomplete version of a career that deserves to be seen in full. The executives and business owners I work with have entire careers worth of depth. My Gen X and Boomer clients especially, people who built genuine expertise and credibility through decades of real work, often have a digital presence that only tells part of that story. Going layer by layer. Seeing what's actually there. Building something that reflects the full depth of the work. That's the craft. Rajiv Jadhav shared thisI was invited to speak at Queens College in New York recently and what came out of that room was one of the more honest conversations about sales and business growth I've had in a long time. It was a group discussion with people who are actually in the middle of building something and that's exactly what made it worth sharing. The topics we covered are things I talk about with clients constantly. Why referral partners, people who already know your customer are worth more than almost any other business development strategy. How convenience is a genuine pricing differentiator and how to apply that to whatever you're building. The difference between a problem aware and a problem unaware audience and why getting that distinction right changes everything about how you communicate your value. What a value stack actually is and how to use it to justify a premium without feeling awkward about your price. And we had a real conversation about customer types, the win-win customer who pays what you ask and is a pleasure to work with, the win-lose customer who needs a little more attention, and the lose-lose customer who wants premium service at budget prices and makes every interaction harder than it needs to be. Knowing which one you're dealing with early is one of the most underrated skills in business. My Gen X clients built entire careers on these instincts. My Boomer clients refined them over decades. Rajiv Jadhav shared thisSomeone came up to me after a keynote recently and told me the part about AI being accessible to everyone and creating economic opportunities across different communities was what resonated most with her. That meant a lot. Because that's the part I work hardest to get right every time I speak. The conversation around artificial intelligence can feel exclusive in ways that I think do real harm. When AI gets framed as something only certain companies or certain people with certain technical backgrounds can access or benefit from, it creates a narrative that leaves a lot of people out of one of the most significant economic opportunities of our generation. That's not the reality. And it's not a narrative I'm willing to leave unchallenged on stage. AI is genuinely accessible right now to small business owners, entrepreneurs and people in communities that have historically arrived late to major economic shifts, if at all. The tools exist. The opportunity is real. And the gap between the people who understand that and the people who don't is closing fast. That's what I talk about when I speak internationally. Not the technical complexity of AI but the human opportunity. What it actually means for real people trying to build something real in a world that's changing faster than most of us expected. Completely worth it. 😄🎸 There's something about that kind of music that cuts right through everything. Bold. Unapologetic. Full forward momentum. No hesitation. I think about that quality a lot in the context of reputation work. The executives and business owners who show up most powerfully in their digital presence have exactly that characteristic, a clarity and confidence about who they are and what they've built that comes through in every search result, every piece of press coverage, every corner of their online footprint. My Gen X and Boomer clients especially know this feeling instinctively. They grew up with this music. They built careers on exactly this kind of energy, showing up fully, doing the work and not apologizing for what they've accomplished. Their digital presence should reflect every bit of that same confidence. Today though the only deliverable was finishing that drive with the volume all the way up. Rajiv Jadhav reacted on thisRajiv Jadhav reacted on thisYesterday morning, my paternal grandmother passed away. I called her Nai Nai. She was 101, and after months of fearing what was beyond, she told my father the hour before she passed, she ���was going home.” As I thought about my post this week, it became obvious: I’d share the lessons I learned from my grandmother, both what to emulate and what to avoid. Her life was nothing notable for most people, and yet, it has always felt extraordinary to me, filled with courageous moves and perseverance almost to a fault. She grew up in China at a time of upheaval and incredible social and political change. Imperial China was ending. Women were no longer binding their feet, and they were starting to work outside the home. The Nationalists, Communists, and the Japanese were all battling for control. One of the few memories she shared with me was hiding in bomb shelters, and a deep distrust of Japanese people, all fostered in her early life. During the course of her life, she made many difficult decisions: She was one of those pioneering women in the workforce. She fled her homeland, leaving her entire family behind, to face uncertainty in a foreign land. She did back-breaking work to care for an 8-person household without help. And later in life, her kids would eventually move and build lives on the other side of the world. Through it all, she focused on what she could control and what she could savor. She was undaunted by change and focused on moving forward. I’m sad, and I need time to grieve. But grief is a funny business. It shows up differently for everyone. For me, the best way to honor my grandmother and process my feelings is to translate what I learned from her into leadership lessons I value and will continue to carry forward.
