Experts from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Clinical Futures work daily to advance pediatric research and improve outcomes for children and their families. Below are some key highlights from the past month: • Brian Fisher, DO, MPH, MSCE, is co-leading Pediatric Fungal Network's STudy of Rare Invasive Fungal DisEases in Immunocompromised Pediatric Patients (PFN-STRIDE), alongside colleagues at Arkansas Children's Research Institute, a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health. The three-part project will examine long-term outcomes, incorporating the perspectives of affected patients and families, and evaluating emerging approaches to diagnosis and management. • CHOP authors are among a global team of researchers who completed a large-scale meta-analysis showing how strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae are distributed across East Africa, Southern Africa, West Africa, and South Asia. Multiple CHOP authors contributed to the research, including Clinical Futures experts Grace Chan, MD, PhD, MPH, and Susan Coffin, MD, MPH. • CHOP and University of Pennsylvania researchers completed a comprehensive evaluation of a multi-year partnership with Botswana that helped raise over $22 million, trained hundreds of health workers, and supported 81 local investigators. Clinical Futures experts Andrew Steenhoff, MBBCh, DCH, the Medical Director of CHOP's Global Health Center, and Merrian J. Brooks, DO MS, an adolescent medicine specialist and pediatric global health expert, contributed to this research that will inform other academic global health partnerships' strategic planning. Two recent SPR Network publications address Medicaid and EPSDT for children and youth with special health care needs. A new AHRQ report, “Adverse Events Among Medicare Hospitalizations in 2021–2023,” presents national findings from the Quality and Safety Review System. The analysis captures more than 40 types of adverse events through systematic review of inpatient Medicare records from rural, targeted urban, critical access, and other acute care hospitals. Did you know that across all 3 years, medication events, pressure injuries/ulcers, and hospital-acquired infections represented about 80 percent of adverse events? Another fabulous pop health symposium from New England Life Care. A great one-two punch from Aisha T Pittman from the National Association of ACOs bringing up-to-date insights from DC and MaineHealth’s Debra McGill who shared her experiences in implementing (and improving) a new data-informed care management model. “This is really hard — to make big changes” she shared along with the counsel to bring IT and analysts and staff together so that resources would be less limited while building and implementing the program. The care management team is now able to target sicker patients as they refine the recipe to support more patients with optimized groups aligned to each patient’s needs. Thumbs up from MyndYou.
