Olga Yurovski posted thisAsk two people on your team what you've spent toward the Kroger JBP commitment. If you get two different answers — both are probably right. That's the problem. JBP meetings are around the corner, and every shopper marketing leader is about to face the same three questions: 1. What have we spent toward the commitment so far? 2. How does that compare to last year? 3. How is next year's plan shaping up? Sounds simple. It isn't. Because: Your commitments cut across your budget structure, not along it. Your internal fiscal year matches none of your retailers' calendars. And "what counts as retail media" means something different at every single account. Most teams try to solve this with Excel and PowerPoint. It works — until anyone asks a new question. Then it's back to the scramble. New on the blog: why commitment tracking is structurally broken, what missing a commitment actually costs you, and the 5 things proactive tracking requires. Link in comments 👇

Olga Yurovski posted thisUnpopular opinion from someone who sells planning software: be suspicious of the ROI demo. Every vendor in this space leads with the ROI dashboard. It's what buyers ask for, so it's what gets demoed. But post-event analysis is only as good as the plan and spend data underneath it. If actuals aren't collected and mapped back to the original plan, event by event, that beautiful dashboard is doing math on estimates. Most teams don't have an analytics problem. They have a system-of-record problem wearing an analytics costume. We just published our full evaluation guide for CPG marketing planning software. It covers: * The 5 tools teams mistake for planning software (TPM and Excel are only two of them) * The 6 criteria that separate a system of record from a pretty interface * 12 questions that force honest answers in any vendor demo, including ours The data ownership question alone has saved teams from some very awkward agency transitions. Olga Yurovski shared thisMost CPG marketing teams that "try AI" on their plans this year will be disappointed. Not because the tools are bad, rather because of what they'll feed them. Paste your plan summary into a chatbot and ask it to flag gaps in your Kroger program, and you'll get a confident, articulate, useless answer. The AI only saw what your spreadsheet could tell it. And your spreadsheet can't even tell you much without an hour of pivot-table archaeology. The AI isn't the problem. The plan is. With annual planning season weeks away, I wrote up four moves omnichannel marketing teams can make this cycle to change that — no new software, no reorg, no IT project: 1. Structure your data as you plan, not after (one taxonomy, one naming convention) #shoppermarketing 2. Pick one home for the plan and defend it 3. Write down "what good looks like", one sentence per tactic 4. Ring-fence a small AI sandbox inside the plan itself The pattern behind all four: the features that make a plan great for humans are the exact prerequisites for AI. AI-readiness isn't a tool you buy. It's hygiene you adopt during work you were going to do anyway. Olga Yurovski shared thisRetail media is moving from a media line item to a full-blown planning discipline. As retailers connect in-store, ecommerce, marketplace, membership, CTV, and offsite media, CPG teams are being asked to manage more complexity, faster decisions, and tighter spend accountability. The problem? Too many teams are still trying to run this through scattered spreadsheets, agency decks, and post-campaign reports. That model is cracking. In our latest post, we look at why retail media planning needs a system of record, one that connects planning, execution, results, and total spend analytics. Read it here: https://bit.ly/4uR5mzb #RetailMedia #ShopperMarketing #CPGMarketing #CommerceMedia #MarketingPlanningRetail Media Is No Longer a Line Item. Olga Yurovski shared thisMy friend and fellow practitioner Uzma Rauf just published something worth reading if you work in CPG. Her diagnosis: retailers want deeper collaboration with brand partners, but many brands keep showing up with the wrong briefcase (polished decks full of national trends and brand equity scores), when buyers want retailer-specific category intelligence with clear financial implications. She calls it a translation problem, not a data problem, and the framing is spot on. From where I sit, working with shopper marketing teams on the planning and budgeting side, I'd add that even when teams build this translation capability, it's hard to sustain without the operational infrastructure to back it up. If you can't quickly pull what was actually planned, spent, and executed at a given retailer last year, building a credible forward-looking story becomes heroic effort every single time. Uzma's piece is the best articulation I've seen of why so many retailer meetings underdeliver, and what winning actually looks like. https://lnkd.in/d5wXPQmC

Olga Yurovski reacted on thisThe agencies winning more scope aren’t always the ones pitching harder. They’re the ones showing up with answers. When you can explain where every dollar went, what it delivered, and how it compares to prior periods, something shifts. Clients don’t ask if they should renew. They ask why you aren’t managing more. That’s what operational excellence actually looks like in practice. ⚡️ Get the full perspective: https://lnkd.in/eph4BvWa #Shopperations #CPGMarketing #FinanceAlignment #MarketingOpsThe Agencies That Control the Budget Control the RelationshipThe Agencies That Control the Budget Control the Relationship

Olga Yurovski shared thisFor years, agencies competed on creative and strategy. But the ground is shifting. AI is compressing creative value, retail media complexity is exploding, and clients want financial accountability in real time. Agencies that haven't built operational muscle yet may be underestimating how quickly the rules are changing. Most agencies haven’t fully realized that yet. Here’s why.The Agencies That Control the Budget Control the RelationshipThe Agencies That Control the Budget Control the RelationshipOlga Yurovski
-
Olga Yurovski shared thisCreative used to be the center of gravity in agency relationships. Today, operational excellence is quietly taking its place. AI is compressing the cost of creative production. Retail Media Networks are consuming a growing share of CPG budgets. And finance teams are asking tougher questions about where every marketing dollar went. In that environment, the agencies gaining trust aren’t the ones with the most impressive pitch decks. They’re the ones who can answer financial questions instantly, show where funding is available, and connect spend to results. Operational clarity is becoming the real competitive advantage. 👉 Curious how this shift is reshaping the agency landscape? Olga Yurovski liked thisOlga Yurovski liked thisNormalize the value in women without their relationships. I've noticed that when people stick up for women, they often say "she was someone's daughter, wife, mother, etc." That's all fine and dandy, but relationships don't determine value. Unfortunately, for much of history, relationships DID determine a woman's value. They couldn't get jobs, open a bank account, or inherit property. So being a mom, husband, or sister was thought to add value. Even in marriage, wives were considered their husband's property. Unfortunately, this mentality still hangs on today. When a woman is SA'd or unalived, people say "she was someone's daughter or mom." I'm sure they had the best of intentions, but it shouldn't matter whether she was someone's daughter, mom, or whatever. She already had value. The sooner we all realize that women have inherent value, the better off we'll all be.

CPG brands need to focus on Retail Velocity Support as their main KPI. Plain and simple! Not followers - nor likes - nor comments - nor virality. While those things are all nice ancillary benefits of consistently putting out great content, they are not the main attraction. You want people to be aware (through content, paid social, and influencers), then consider (through great packaging and solid ingredient labels), and then generate trial (value, health benefits, etc.). I genuinely believe that they do not do this on a brand's website, especially for a lesser-known one. Back in 2017, sure...but not anymore! People buy new CPG and Beverage brands, primarily in brick & mortar stores. This is where they are searching to discover new products to integrate into their lives, and you must meet them on this journey. Brands should experiment with different formats that feel real, relatable, and current. Right now, that is leaning toward humaized, differentiated, "lived-in" content. You also want it to stand out from the clutter and be a little bit out of the box. Or in this instance, a little bit in the cart. 😜 Sircle Media has been supporting Retail for CPG brands longer than anyone else in the game, and we are here to help you move product now. With Expo West next week, it is time to talk shop. Let's go... Much love for Smood Sweets 🎯🛒 #cpg #socialmediacontent #socialmediaagency

How do I get consumers to trade up? Or, to reframe: how do I find consumers who might trade up? In the better-for-you and startup CPG space, this is an always-on existential question. And it’s easy to bark up the wrong tree. We have a saying at Cartograph: “Cheetos are undefeated”. Some consumers are so loyal and some products have such stickiness (cheesy fingerness?) that you’re better off NOT trying to speak to them. This has always been a hard problem. One common solution: sell in the natural channel. Cheetos fans don’t shop at Whole Foods as much - or they don’t look for them when they’re there. The challenge with Amazon is basically everyone is in the same aisle, regardless of channel, price, or key selling points. So many categories are a price race to the bottom, and you’ll likely get beat on reviews if you use anything but high-tech, non-natural ingredients. Amazon’s Marketing Cloud has changed this, at least a bit. Now, with your PPC ad targeting “snacks”, you can exclude all the people who have bought cheetos in the last 365 days, or do a price-related audience filter, to carve out people who might not give your product a second look. Cheetos is a bit of a cheesy example, but consider beverages that sell at $35-40/12ct vs. $15-20, or higher priced beauty products not competing with mass or drugstore prices. That’s where it can be really powerful: take a shot at big search keywords without getting into traffic with folks who wouldn’t buy in your segment. This is why AMC audiences are table stakes for us this year: you can spend more with the people that matter, and less with those who probably don’t.

Why is Minnesota performing exactly like Poland? 🤯 We paired US states with global countries that share identical online wine and spirits retail survival rates (2021-2026). Once a week, we publish an article about an interesting discovery in the industry. The results prove that Market Structure > Geography. Here are the 4 Global Archetypes we discovered: 🏰 The Emerging Fortresses: Minnesota & Poland (~90%) AI Edge: Low competition = time to implement. These markets have the runway to adopt AI tools before the giants arrive. 💎 The Premium Hubs: New York & Japan (~83%) AI Edge: Curation at scale. AI-powered personalization is the only way to deliver white-glove service without white-glove costs. ⚔️ The Saturated Heartlands: California & Italy (~73%) The Risk: AI commoditization. When everyone has the same chatbot, differentiation collapses further. Custom AI or die. 📜 The Bureaucratic Struggles: Maryland & Brazil (~60%) The Opportunity: AI compliance automation. The retailers who survive here will be those who let AI handle the red tape. In 2026, the question isn't whether to adopt AI, it's whose AI you're building on. Renting intelligence from aggregators means renting your future. This is why we built sommelier.bot's Federated AI Platform: world-class sommelier intelligence for independents, without the platform trap. See where your market fits in the chart below. 👇 Full article here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gsgJ7aC5 → https://sommelier.bot/: Own your AI.
