Kris Brown shared thisAlways great to see NJ Senator Andy Kim. At a time when so much feels off course, Andy’s voice of hope, truth, and humanity is a guide for us all. He is a true guardian of peace and justice in America. Never tell him the odds, Andy knows what we must do to end gun violence, and that there is no try.

Kris Brown shared thisI was excited to represent Brady: United Against Gun Violence at last week's SXSW, joining Amory Wooden of ANDMORE® on stage thanks to Seth Gaffney at PREACHER, Ashley Shaffer at Redscout, and Chloe Sacks from PEAK6. What stood out most was the recognition that brands and businesses have a real role to play here. Culture doesn’t shift through policy alone — it shifts when what we see, hear, and experience every day starts to change. That’s where the private sector has enormous influence. It’s vital that we continue creating spaces like this, where leaders across industries can engage in honest, solutions-oriented conversations about gun violence and their role in driving change. Grateful to have been part of it — and looking forward to building on the momentum.

Kris Brown shared thisIn this week’s Substack, I share more about the Oscar-award winning documentary All the Empty Rooms, and Brady’s partnership with the production team. We must change the conversation around gun violence in America, and this film tells stories that demand our attention. Read more at the link in my bio.

Kris Brown shared thisThank you, Afdhel Aziz, for spotlighting this. Storytelling shapes how we understand responsibility and risk. When safe gun storage shows up naturally on screen, it helps normalize a behavior that can save lives. That’s exactly what we’re working toward through #ShowGunSafety, in partnership with writers and studios across Hollywood.Kris Brown shared thisDid you watch the Oscar's last night? You may have seen that the documentary short "All the Empty Rooms" won an Oscar for its focus on children killed in school shootings. It underpinned one unexpected place where gun violence prevention is taking shape - in Hollywood. That came through in my conversation with Kris Brown, president of Brady: United Against Gun Violence, one of America’s leading gun violence prevention organizations. Through #ShowGunSafety campaign, Brady is working with writers and studios to make safe gun storage visible on screen. It’s simple, and that’s why it works. Culture doesn’t usually change because people are told what to think. It changes when new behavior starts to feel normal. And with 4.6 million children living in homes with loaded, unlocked guns, normal matters. This is practical culture change, not performative messaging. Find out more about Brady's work and cooperation with Hollywood in my latest Forbes piece via the comments below. #GoodIsTheNewCool #StoriesThatFillTheHopeGap

Kris Brown shared thisViolent crime is falling across the United States, and firearm deaths and injuries have been declining since 2022. Strong gun laws and investments in prevention have made a material difference and saved countless lives. And cities that have invested strongly in prevention programs are seeing some of the sharpest declines. Strong gun laws work. We need to continue these policies, not dismantle them. But the current administration is moving in the exact opposite direction by expanding access to deadly weapons. They say they are the only leaders who are “tough on crime,” and that more guns make us safer. But the data speaks for itself. We won't be gaslit. Get the facts in my latest Substack. https://lnkd.in/e6kCN8-JCrime is Down. So Why is Trump Flooding Our Streets with More Guns?Crime is Down. So Why is Trump Flooding Our Streets with More Guns?

Kris Brown shared thisThis administration is quietly restoring gun rights to individuals who were convicted of felonies. As I shared with NPR, there are few details about who DOJ is deciding to put on this list, and the lack of transparency could lead to violent offenders having access to deadly weapons. It's critical for public safety that we have a clear process and vetting procedure before restoring gun rights. But the Trump administration once again thinks it’s above the law. The decision to move forward with restoring rights before the rulemaking process is even finished shows a disregard for the lives and safety of the American people. https://lnkd.in/eXQnkZktThe Trump DOJ is giving guns back to felons, including one alleged fake electorThe Trump DOJ is giving guns back to felons, including one alleged fake elector

Kris Brown shared thisRepresentations in TV and film have helped normalize behaviors like wearing seatbelts. That's why the inclusion of secure firearm storage in Scream 7 is so important. The newest film in the Scream franchise shows Sidney Prescott as a responsible mom and gun owner who keeps her gun securely locked in a safe. In this week's Substack, I talk more about the film and how Brady's Show Gun Safety campaign is working to leverage the power of film and television to make us all safer. https://lnkd.in/ebEaf6ihThe Most Important Scene in Scream 7 is Something You Might Have MissedThe Most Important Scene in Scream 7 is Something You Might Have Missed

Kris Brown shared thisOur veterans made significant sacrifices for our safety; the very least we can do is protect theirs. In my Substack this week, I talk about the Trump administration's actions that are being marketed as a freedom-bearing tribute to our nation’s veterans, but in actuality, will create a dangerous situation that could give individuals struggling with severe mental illness – and who are at risk of suicide – easy access to lethal weapons. Kris Brown shared thisLast Saturday marked eight years since the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that claimed the lives of 17 people and injured 17 others. Aalayah Eastmond, a survivor of the shooting and a Team ENOUGH leader at Brady, published a moving op-ed in USA Today that lays bare the further erosion of public safety currently before Congress. The dangerous bill that Aalayah wrote about, the so-called “Innovate to De-Escalate Act,” passed the House of Representatives and is now being primed for consideration in the United States Senate. Thanks to a significant multi-year investment from a funder, End Family Fire is hard at work, building a bottom-up, community led, secure storage program throughout the state. We kicked things off last Tuesday with bringing all 50+ community partners together alongside our Advisory Board to review research and focus group plans, outline gaps, and identify populations who are/were not having their needs met via existing efforts. Huge thanks to our research team of Ubuntu Research & Evaluation, LLC and to our facilitator extraordinaire Gregg Potter for making our meetings not only engaging, but also meaningful and fun, too. Thank you Ad Council for your valuable insight on campaign possibilities over the next few years and thank you to Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez for stopping by to meet attendees, too. Learned a tremendous amount from everyone around the table and walked away with great enthusiam and excitement for the path forward with this campaign. See you all again in person later this year and many more times before that online. #EFFWisconsin

A Governance Shift Worth Watching in Florida As someone working at the intersection of law, real estate ecosystems, and community structure, I’m closely following a bill moving through the Florida House of Representatives that could fundamentally reshape how residential communities operate. House Bill 657, introduced by State Representative Juan Porras, proposes something Florida has never formally provided before: ➡️ A lawful pathway for communities to dissolve their HOA. In regions like Tampa and across Florida’s growth corridors, where HOA-governed housing dominates new development, this isn’t just procedural reform. It’s a philosophical shift. ⸻ What HB 657 Signals If advanced, the bill would: • Eliminate mandatory mediation between homeowners and HOAs • Introduce a community association court model • Allow residents to dissolve an HOA through: – A 20% petition – A full community vote – A 2/3 approval threshold For decades, HOA governance has largely functioned as a permanent layer of private regulatory authority. This bill introduces the possibility that governance may instead be: 👉 Conditional 👉 Participatory 👉 Revocable ⸻ Why This Matters HOAs don’t just enforce rules. They manage: • Infrastructure • Shared amenities • Financial reserves • Environmental standards If dissolution becomes viable, communities will need to rethink: What replaces centralized authority? This opens important discussions around: ✔️ Local stewardship ✔️ Alternative governance models ✔️ Municipal integration ✔️ Cooperative management structures ⸻ A Broader Lens To me, the significance of HB 657 is not simply the ability to dissolve an HOA. It is the legal acknowledgment that: Community governance should derive legitimacy from the governed. Florida may be entering a period where residential governance evolves from imposed permanence toward structured consent. ⸻ I’ve joined the broader discussion here as well: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eEM_V_Yd ⸻ Looking forward to thoughtful dialogue from: • Real estate professionals • Community leaders • Policy analysts • Municipal planners on how this could reshape Florida’s housing landscape. — Michelle L. Connecticut lawmakers have drafted another AI regulatory bill. But this year they have dropped many of the model regulation provisions in favor of more use-case regulations. The drafted bill would: ▪️ Provide whistleblower protections for frontier model AI developer employees; ▪️ Regulate companion chatbots; ▪️ Regulate automated decision-making systems used on employees; ▪️ Require labeling of synthetic content produced by AI; ▪️ Create an AI regulatory sandbox ▪️ Direct several economic development, education, and training programs for AI; ▪️ Allow AI users to apply for a proposed safe harbor program. https://lnkd.in/gQhaYWQj

The Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) weighed in on key steps to continue U.S. leadership in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Areas highlighted by NVTC that must be addressed cover AI data, talent, digital infrastructure and standards & regulations. Below is a summary of NVTC’s key steps to continuing U.S. AI leadership with a link to the full NVTC submission. (Thanks to NVTC and Jennifer Taylor for the summary.) NVTC provided this input on AI leadership in response to an Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) request for comments on the development of an AI Action Plan as directed by Presidential Executive Order 14179. The AI Action Plan will define U.S. federal AI policy, at least during the current administration, and is expected to be released by July 2025. Credit to everyone at NVTC who helped to prepare this document for submission to OSTP! Brian 🌎 NVTC weighs in: Key steps to keep the U.S. leading in AI Well, you know how AI is basically touching everything these days? In February, The White House OSTP put out a call for input on how the U.S. can stay ahead in the AI race, and NVTC jumped in with some recommendations. We laid out four big moves to keep America leading the way, all tied to the new AI Action Plan from Executive Order 14179, aiming to maintain America’s global AI dominance. AI is changing the game in every industry, and if we play our cards right, the U.S. can stay at the top. NVTC recommended these areas for attention: ✅ Data – AI is only as good as the data it learns from. We need strong policies to ensure high-quality, well-governed data that improves model performance, enhances security, and keeps us ahead in AI advancements. ✅ Talent – No surprise here—AI is nothing without the right people building it. Investing in education and upskilling is critical to fueling innovation and keeping our AI workforce strong. ✅ Digital Infrastructure – Think of AI like a race car. Without the right track, it’s not going anywhere. Scalable computing power and seamless connectivity are the backbone of AI growth, and we need to make sure our researchers and companies have what they need to push boundaries. ✅ Standards & Regulations – We need smart, responsible AI policies that drive ethical innovation and build global trust. If the U.S. leads in AI governance, we set the rules for how AI develops worldwide. Bottom line? If we get these four things right, the U.S. doesn’t just stay in the AI race—we define it. Go deeper: Read the full response here: https://lnkd.in/d-nFgpwK #NVTC #artificialintelligence #AI #AILaw

This was a lot of fun! VA State Bar members be on the lookout for a summary soon. TL;DR from me is that #smallbiz innovators hope policymakers and courts follow the facts like Judge Mehta did in acknowledging the competitiveness of markets for #AI services, which pose direct threats to general search incumbents like #Google. They want distribution channels & platforms with integrated services and far-reaching scale, and that means #antitrust enforcement must allow them to fight for scale and truly challenge rivals. In this case, the competitive conditions evolved so much since 2020 that the accepted market definitions and therefore liability are more in question than ever. The lesson for #antitrust enforcers and courts considering #tech #antitrust lawsuits is clear: Accepting narrow market definitions that ignore dynamic competitive conditions risks distorting outcomes with ill-fitting remedies in search of a problem. The result is a toxic mix of penalties for innovation and fierce competition, leading to degraded services with weaker scale for #smallbiz developers demanding greater scale, more innovation, and better services. The SBA has launched a "full-scale" audit of its 8(a) business development program with the stated intention of referring matters to DOJ and SBA's Office of Inspector General for enforcement related to fraud and bribery. Led by SBA's Office of General Contracting and Business Development, SBA's audit will initially focus on "high-dollar and limited-competition contracts" going back 15 years. As Chair of Fluet's Litigation + Investigations Practice, I wanted to share an update on our innovative legal strategy addressing the unprecedented mass terminations at USAID that I discussed in my previous post. Since alerting you to our work challenging these terminations, characterized as a "Reduction in Force," our team has successfully implemented our strategic "group appeal" approach. While others pursued class actions that were ultimately rejected by the courts, we had already anticipated this outcome and developed an alternative path forward. Our approach is yielding results: The MSPB has now consolidated our appeals, which are currently in process. This consolidation allows our clients to: 1. Challenge the fundamental legitimacy of the terminations rather than merely contesting procedural irregularities 2. Combine individual appeals with similar claims while preserving each employee's right to tell their complete story 3. Pursue comprehensive discovery while significantly reducing costs 4. Focus on substantive due process violations that demand full restoration of employment status What makes this approach particularly valuable is its replicability. As other federal agencies face similar restructuring efforts, our litigation team's strategy can be adapted to protect workers' legal rights to be judged on merit and terminated only after proper notice and opportunity to be heard. I look forward to reporting on the progress of this direct approach as we continue advocating for federal employees' fundamental rights in accordance with established law!
