Jake Dobkin shared thisHi Friends! We're hiring for a few positions on my team in NYC this month: an Ad Operations Manager, and two Sales Assistants. We're supporting some of the great mission-driven public media brands in the US: WNYC, WQXR, Gothamist, Radiolab, On The Media, the New Yorker Radio Hour, Science Friday, and others. The work makes a difference, and it's a great group of people. https://lnkd.in/g9meT585 ; pass it on!

Jake Dobkin shared thisA tough week for all of us in public media- please take a minute to support your local station if you haven't already!Jake Dobkin shared thisLast night, Congress approved a measure to claw back $1.1 billion in federal funding for the American public broadcasting system. This was a decision that stands in opposition to the prevailing sentiment of the majority of Americans: a survey from The Harris Poll just this week found that two-thirds of Americans (including 58% of Republicans and 77% of Democrats) support federal funding for public radio. This morning LaFontaine E. Oliver, New York Public Radio President and CEO and Executive Chair, shared a note with our community about the devastating impact of these cuts and where we go next. “[This is] funding that goes directly to sharing life-saving information and life-affirming stories. Funding that holds our government accountable; brings people together in good-faith conversation; and lifts up classical music and the arts. In plain speech, this is the worst possible outcome of a months-long series of attacks, effectively ending federal funding for public media, which has enjoyed bipartisan support since 1967—and still does. As challenging as all of this is to take in, I want to state emphatically: this will not be the end of public media, or New York Public Radio.” To read more and donate, click here: https://lnkd.in/e7b3B5DRA Letter from NYPR's President & CEO and Executive Chair LaFontaine Oliver - New York Public RadioA Letter from NYPR's President & CEO and Executive Chair LaFontaine Oliver - New York Public Radio

Jake Dobkin shared thisLocal journalism is a key pillar of our democracy: please support us!Jake Dobkin shared thisPublic media has never been more vulnerable. It’s also never been more valuable or more urgently needed. This is a precarious time for public media. The White House has issued an Executive Order aiming to eliminate all federal funding to NPR and PBS, and their proposed budget calls for the complete defunding of public media. While we’ve never faced a moment as challenging as this one, we’ve seen tough times before. And we’ll do whatever it takes to stand strong, and continue to provide essential public services to our community. Please stand with us by making a gift during our spring pledge drive. https://pledge.wnyc.org/

Jake Dobkin shared thisSo proud for our newsroom!Jake Dobkin shared thisNEW! The WNYC/Gothamist newsroom has been named a finalist for the 2025 Pulitzer Prize in the Audio Reporting category “for their revelatory investigation into decades of sexual assault of female inmates on Rikers Island.” The “NYC Now” podcast series dove into hundreds of lawsuits filed against NYS sexual abusers, and found that the vast majority of those lawsuits focused on a single location: Rikers Island. The reporting uncovered abuse ignored by authorities for generations. The investigation took a shocking turn when WNYC/Gothamist determined there was a single person accused of assault by at least 24 women: a longtime guard who went by the name “Champagne” and was still employed at the time the series came out. Due to this reporting, investigations began at the prison, leading to reforms and the removal of officers from the women’s facility. Congratulations to the entire team who worked on this impactful and important work, as well as to the women who bravely entrusted their stories to us. https://lnkd.in/e25c6MdqHere are the winners of the 2025 Pulitzer Prizes - PoynterHere are the winners of the 2025 Pulitzer Prizes - Poynter

New England Public Media finalized its merger with GBH to create a statewide network of stations, all committed to protecting and strengthening local journalism, music, and community connection. Thanks to Susan Goldberg and my colleagues across the state, I'm more optimistic than ever about the future of public media here in Massachusetts.Jake Dobkin liked thisAn exciting new chapter has begun as we have officially merged with New England Public Media (NEPM)! Together with CAI on the Cape and Islands, we are building a powerhouse public media network that is both hyper local and spans the entire Commonwealth. And we have already hit the ground running with some incredible collaborations: IN COMMON: On Independence Day, we launched our new weekly statewide radio news magazine, In Common: News from the Berkshires to the Bay, hosted by Jeremy Siegel. It airs simultaneously across GBH News, NEPM, and CAI, bringing you stories that reflect life in every corner of Massachusetts. STATEWIDE POLITICAL COVERAGE: GBH News’ Adam Reilly recently represented all three of our news outlets to cover the first U.S. Senate debate between Sen. Ed Markey and Rep. Seth Moulton, featuring NEPM Executive Editor Elizabeth Roman on the panel. Mark your calendars for August 3rd, when we host the second debate across all our platforms with Boston 25, The Bay State Banner, and El Planeta. BROADCASTING BSO AT TANGLEWOOD: GBH Music and CRB Classical 99.5 are partnering with Classical NEPM to broadcast the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summer concerts live from Tanglewood through August 23, bringing more world-class music straight to residents across the state for free. A huge thank you to news Editor-in-Chief Dan Lothian, Matt Abramovitz and everyone at NEPM, CAI, and GBH for your creativity and drive as we find new ways to work together and serve the state. We are just getting started, and I couldn't be more excited about what we will accomplish together to keep Massachusetts connected.

Jake Dobkin liked thisJake Dobkin liked thisFor the past couple of months, I've stepped away from running City Cast as a whole to act as the temporary General Manager of City Cast DC. Thanks to the chaos at the Washington Post, our DC team has the chance to build the biggest and most essential local newsroom in the DMV, and I've been having so much fun hiring talented reporters and scrapping for stories. But all good things...Now we're hiring a permanent GM to replace me. You'll have the chance to run a fantastic, well resourced, ambitious local news operation within City Cast. You'll own the P&L; oversee edit, sales, marketing, subscriptions; and work with a delightful group of people. You've got to be in the DMV or be willing to move here, and you should have experience in business and media. Please apply yourself, or send me great suggestions. https://lnkd.in/e9E2RCEg

Journalism at the center of YouTube? In 2010, I was the first partnerships executive at YouTube focused solely on news media partners. Distinguishing between "news" and "citizen journalism" and commentary was a wildly moving target back then and the subject of a lot of internal and external debate. 16 years later, the lines between functions may be gaining clarity. And it's about time. "When millions of people rely on you for understanding, people expect you to start speaking with more care, more structure, and more transparency. You need editorial standards, fact-checking processes, and reporting." https://lnkd.in/grEFrvzj

I sat down last week with Emily Schario, head of content for Boston Globe Media's B-Side newsletter, to break down what’s really happening in today’s job market. Among the topics we discussed: -- Why the job market feels so unpredictable right now. -- What’s actually driving layoffs and hiring slowdowns. -- How technology and policy shifts are shaping opportunities. -- What this means for millennials and Gen Zers navigating their next move. If you’ve been trying to make sense of where things are headed, please check out our conversation here. https://lnkd.in/ewvtfWyZ

AI isn’t replacing media buyers — it’s replacing the parts of the job we probably shouldn’t have been doing manually in the first place. That was one of the lines I shared yesterday while joining The Women in Programmatic Network for a conversation about a question many of us are asking right now: Is AI becoming the new media buyer? It’s a conversation that feels less hypothetical every month. What people really mean when they say that is that AI is increasingly becoming the execution layer of media buying. The mechanics that used to take teams of analysts can now happen continuously and at scale. But that doesn’t mean the thinking disappears. It means human time moves up the stack. Instead of manually optimizing campaigns, people increasingly design the systems AI operates within — defining strategy, guardrails, success metrics, and business context. AI might be pulling the levers, but humans still decide which levers exist and why. It’s no surprise, then, that campaign management itself is evolving. Programmatic began as automation of buying, and now we’re moving toward automation of decisioning. Much of the tactical work — bid adjustments, pacing, reporting — is becoming automated, and honestly that’s a good thing. Those tasks were never the highest-value use of people’s time. What matters more is asking the bigger questions: Are we solving the right problem? Is the algorithm optimizing toward the right goal? Are we interpreting the results correctly? The role of the media professional becomes less operator and more strategist and systems thinker. The people who thrive in the next phase of programmatic won’t necessarily be the best manual optimizers — they’ll be the ones who know how to direct AI effectively. As execution becomes more automated, the skills that matter shift as well. The most valuable people in this industry will increasingly be those who can translate between business goals, technology, and people — combining strategic thinking, communication, and the ability to turn business objectives into measurable frameworks. Because at the end of the day, media is still a people business. AI can process signals and optimize performance, but it can’t sit in a room with a client and help them figure out what they’re actually trying to achieve. As AI makes execution cheaper and faster, the real competitive advantage shifts back to strategy and relationships. The most valuable roles will sit between systems and strategy — the people who can connect technology to business outcomes and guide clients through what it all means. In the future, I suspect the best media professionals won’t just run campaigns. They’ll design the systems that run them. Curious where others land on this — does AI change the role of the media buyer, or redefine it? Thanks to Mary Nickels (Wood), Grace Ebach, and Olivia Brewer for the candid and insightful convo, and to Dayna Moon and Rebecca Aliab D. for getting me in there to chat on my fave topic.

This insightful prediction from Jennifer Brandel for Neiman Lab is worth a read for every newsroom leader working with AI: "AI companies cannot afford degraded inputs at the exact moment their valuations hinge on delivering stable, trustworthy outputs. And with the tech industry already jittery about an AI bubble, and investors being uneasy about long-term revenue models, regulators circling and consumers getting burned by hallucinations — this seems somewhat inevitable. We’re already seeing the early moves of vertical integration — the tech-industry equivalent of buying the farm when the food supply gets unstable: OpenAI is funding and expanding Axios Local into new markets. Google is bankrolling California local news efforts and offering AI training to newsrooms. Microsoft partnered with Semafor to build “Signals,” a wire-service alternative combining human reporting and AI summarization. AI companies are striking major licensing deals with AP, Axel Springer, FT, and News Corp. These aren’t random. They are supply-chain decisions." Read it: https://lnkd.in/ezih8Yku
