This 36 year old CEO built
OpenAI, then walked away from the most valuable tech company in history to regulate AI.
Meet Mira Murati, CEO of
Thinking Machines Lab.

Born in Vlorë, Albania, Mira grew up 6,000 miles away from the heart of the tech world.
But even as a kid, she knew she was meant to build.
She left Albania as a teenager and went on to earn her degree in mechanical engineering from
Dartmouth College
At the time, she was one of only a few women in her class.
An engineering genius, Mira's meteoric rise was immediate.
After graduating, she started her career at
Goldman Sachs, then moved into aerospace at
Zodiac Aerospace.
From there, she joined
Tesla to work on the Model X.
But her defining chapter began in 2018, when she joined
OpenAI as one of its early team members and co-founders.
At the time, it was a scrappy nonprofit research lab with a bold mission, led by Sam Altman.
Quickly, she became CTO of the growing team.
As CTO, Mira led the teams behind the company's biggest launches, including ChatGPT, DALL·E, and Codex.
She was also a key force in securing OpenAI’s multibillion-dollar partnership with
Microsoft, one of the most significant deals in tech history.
In 2023, she briefly stepped in as interim CEO during a leadership shakeup, which earned her praise for her calm, clear, and principled leadership.
But in 2024, Mira made headlines again.
She announced she was leaving OpenAI to focus on building AI for the public good without the pressures of corporate control.
The tech industry was stunned.
Sources close to her say she was increasingly concerned about the commercialization of AI and its long-term social impact.
It wasn't a secret that her leadership no longer aligned with CEO Sam Altman's relentless pursuit of capital gain.
After her departure, OpenAI announced an $80 billion valuation.
That's because, for Mira, innovation was never the goal — impact was.
Speaking on her view of AI, Mira shared:
"How do you make sure AI is aligned with human intention and ultimately in service of humanity? It's important that we bring in different voices, like philosophers, social scientists, artists, and people from the humanities."
Today, she’s building something new. Quietly. Thoughtfully.
As CEO of
Thinking Machines Lab, she focuses on ethics and impact of AI.
Mira's story isn’t just rare. It’s historic.
Yet this post may be the first time you've ever heard of her.
That's why I'm going to be sharing the stories of more women execs and founders like Mira every Wednesday for
#WomenFounderWednesday.
