In our latest contribution to JCJ ARCHITECTURE's 90th anniversary series, Barbara Hubbard, Olivia Pawlik, and Eric Haggstrom, AIA, LEED AP, Fitwel Ambassador reflect on the evolution of sustainable design, its impact on our industry, and the responsibility we share in creating more resilient, healthy, and efficient places. Eric Haggstrom, AIA, LEED AP, Fitwel Ambassador reposted thisEric Haggstrom, AIA, LEED AP, Fitwel Ambassador reposted thisYesterday, the JCJ ARCHITECTURE design team for the new Bullard-Havens Technical High School in Bridgeport visited the almost-completed school building. Walking the project and sharing lessons learned, both good and bad, is always a part of our process. We're looking forward to seeing students in the labs and classrooms later this year, then the old school will come down, and an athletic complex will take its place. This project is especially significant as Connecticut’s first fossil-fuel-free technical high school. Funded by the State, it exemplifies Connecticut’s commitment to zero-energy readiness, high-performance building standards, and fossil-fuel-free construction. "Kids were running the halls with excitement to see the next classroom space and parents were in awe of the educational environment and opportunities now available to their kids." - Dr. Michael Flanagan, Superintendent of Tyngsborough Public Schools It's moments like this that speak volumes around why we do what we do! Eric Haggstrom, AIA, LEED AP, Fitwel Ambassador reposted thisEric Haggstrom, AIA, LEED AP, Fitwel Ambassador reposted thisGreat to be back at New York Build 2025, discussing “Building & Designing Resilient Cities”! Thanks to fellow panelists (Breanna Horne, CHMM, ENV SP, WEDG, WELL AP, Fitwel, Eric Haggstrom, Niniane Tozzi, Sofia Zuberbuhler-Yafar RLA, ENV SP) moderated by Margaret Newman FAIA, LEED AP and everyone who joined the conversation on how we can shape more climate-resilient, sustainable, and inclusive urban environments. It was inspiring to learn and exchange ideas with experts and practitioners committed to tackling the challenges our cities face in this era. Lots of homework still left, but looking forward to driving meaningful change! #NYBuild #ResilientCities #UrbanPlanning #UrbanDesign #Sustainability

Eric Haggstrom, AIA, LEED AP, Fitwel Ambassador liked thisEric Haggstrom, AIA, LEED AP, Fitwel Ambassador liked thisHow should architects engage with communities — as guides, interpreters, advocates, or something else entirely? That was one of the questions we explored yesterday at New York Build Expo during our panel, “Putting People First: Community Driven Design in Practice.” It was a spirited conversation about the role we all play in helping empower people and communities to shape the built environment. It was a privilege to be part of an incredible panel of professionals. Last week, that meant a beautiful winter sunset over the Great Marsh on the way to a community meeting in Essex. We had a great conversation around the Essex Elementary School project for the Manchester Essex Regional School District. Lots of good questions, candid comments, and constructive input — exactly the kind of dialogue that helps shape the right project for the district and the communities it serves. Grateful for the engagement, the time people took to come out on a night when temperatures were in the single digits, and the reminder that good projects are built as much through listening as they are through design. Eric Haggstrom, AIA, LEED AP, Fitwel Ambassador liked thisEric Haggstrom, AIA, LEED AP, Fitwel Ambassador liked thisI left Marist University with so much - a strong education, my first real job, and lifelong friends. Any time I get the chance to visit campus and be present for Marist students, I jump at the opportunity. Recently, I visited Marist during alumni weekend to share my career experiences with students and conduct an AMA. The packed room of attending students definitely brought their A-game, asking some amazing questions about the world of social media + gaming, our approach to issues management, the biggest areas of opportunity in the social media craft, and so much more. My thanks to Amanda Damiano, Ph.D. + Christina Brown for the invite. Go Red Foxes!

H2M Director of Private Sector Architecture Kevin Paul, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, CFM, and Deputy Real Estate Market Director and Department Manager for Civil Engineering Joel Richardson, P.E., recently published an article on office amenities in New York Real Estate Journal. The article, titled “Bringing Class A Experiences to Class B Buildings,” outlines how developers and building owners can enhance the appeal of their office buildings by incorporating amenities commonly associated with more expensive, higher-end office leases. These amenities include fitness and wellness facilities, shared communal spaces, dining areas, and more. “There is a potentially great opportunity for property owners to elevate Class B properties, thereby helping provide comfortable, productivity-minded spaces to the many businesses looking to return to the office.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/ek49K7Hd

Excited to discuss this important topic as Onondaga County looks toward a future with a growth mentality. As communities evolve, compact, smart growth strategies will be essential to achieve complete communities that are financially and environmentally sustainable, and increase our quality of life.
