In business, we talk endlessly about innovation, disruption, and competitive advantage. We celebrate leaders who "crush it" and "dominate the market." But what if the most powerful leadership quality is something simpler and more radical? In my latest Campfire Conversation, I sat down with Kerem Durdag, a business leader who came to the United States at eighteen with $200 in his pocket. He experienced racism, xenophobia, and hatred. He was told to go back home. His response? He chose decency. Not as weakness. Not as naivety. But as the foundation for everything else. Kerem told me: "Fear is reductive. It's a cudgel, a hammer, a laser beam that can reduce you to nothing. Whereas love, you have to seek it. You have to find the scale of it." In this video, Kerem talks about why decency (not dominance) is the fire we need to tend in ourselves and our organizations. This matters in business because culture flows from leadership. When leaders operate from fear, they create cultures of control, zero-sum thinking, and toxic competition. The Silent Accounting Issue That Could Distort Your Margins: Capitalized Software Costs A growing number of tech companies are quietly boosting margins by capitalizing software development costs—but most stakeholders don’t understand the accounting mechanics behind it. Under ASC 350-40, companies can capitalize certain internal-use software development costs, deferring them as assets and amortizing them over time. The result? Lower expenses today, higher reported margins, and cleaner EBITDA. The problem is interpretation and consistency. What qualifies as “development” versus “research”? When does the capitalization window open and close? How much of the engineering team’s time is eligible? These aren’t technical footnotes—they’re significant accounting judgments that can materially change how profitable a company looks. Here’s what’s often missed: • There’s wide variance in how firms apply the rules, even within the same sector. • Some companies overcapitalize to manage burn optics or hit earnings targets. • Others undercapitalize out of caution, hurting comparability and overstating costs. Few outside the controller or audit team are tracking this closely. But the impact is nontrivial: • In a sample of public SaaS firms, capitalized software costs made up 8–15% of total assets. • Improper treatment has led to restatements and audit issues—especially during IPO diligence or M&A. **You’re Leaving Money on the Table by Going It Alone** Most CPA firms, RIA owners, and ambitious acquirers are laser focused on their own turf: boosting revenue, securing clients, or landing the next deal. But here’s the blind spot , value isn’t created or realized in a vacuum. Succession, firm valuation, and client trust all sit at the intersection of professional relationships that too often operate in silos. When CPAs, RIAs, and M&A strategists come together intentionally, three things happen: First, growth gets easier. Aligning your accounting, wealth management, and deal teams means you spot growth opportunities no one could see alone. Client service expands, cross-referrals flow, and your firm becomes more valuable as a multi-dimensional partner , not a commodity. Second, you sell stronger.
