Drew "Murph" Busbee posted thisIn some personal news, I wanted to share with the broader ecosystem that this is my last week at DTI. Three years ago, as I was ending my terminal time with the USSF, I walked into an abandoned warehouse in Culver City that would become the proving ground for I2A and The BR-DGE. From whiteboards to execution, we supported 64 I2A companies that have since scaled from R&D efforts to $1.7B in follow-on government contracts and $2.25B in private investment. What started as an empty space is now 21,000 sq ft of collaboration space that has hosted 149 events and over 6,000 annual visitors. Along the way, we welcomed international delegations, senior Department of Defense leaders, and a few unexpected guests. To the team, thank you for trusting me to lead. I’m taking a few weeks to reset. Wedding planning, more rugby, and some time at home. Then it’s back to building in the defense and space ecosystem for the long haul. Institute for Digital Asset Innovation (IDAI) podcast network series “Supplying Space” explores the future of sustained human presence beyond Earth will not be built by launch vehicles alone. It will be built by infrastructure. The partnership between Max Space and Voyager Technologies represents one of the most important developments emerging in the next phase of the space economy: large-volume orbital and lunar habitation systems. Expandable habitats fundamentally change the equation for exploration. Instead of launching rigid structures that limit crew capacity and mission duration, expandable systems allow us to deploy mass-efficient, high-volume environments capable of supporting science teams, manufacturing capabilities, and long-duration human operations. These technologies are not just engineering advancements — they are strategic enablers for the next era of space infrastructure. As the global community prepares for sustained lunar missions and the establishment of permanent off-world capabilities, habitat scalability will directly influence mission architecture, crew survivability, and the ability to support deep-space operations. This is where the Max Space and Voyager collaboration becomes especially important. Their work advances a future where expandable structures can support: • Lunar surface operations • Orbital research and manufacturing platforms • Deep-space mission staging • Long-duration human habitation Most importantly, these capabilities strengthen what the space industry ultimately requires for exploration to scale: assured access to operational environments beyond Earth. We appreciate it! For those not familiar with the program, THE BR-DGE is a space innovation hub based in El Segundo that connects startups, government, venture, and industry. They do a great job helping companies navigate the government space ecosystem and connect with real mission opportunities. Their rideshare marketplace helps payload teams and mission hosts find each other faster, with clear visibility into open capacity, timelines, and mission requirements. It is a simple idea, and a very good one. At Blackwing Space, we are building affordable, American-made, modular nanosatellite platforms designed to reduce the cost and complexity of accessing space. Our Baby Bird mission is part of that effort, providing a practical path for payload teams to fly early, validate technology, and move toward repeatable flight opportunities on commercial nanosatellite platforms. It started as a launch company, then a global broadband company, and has now become a full stack AI company with orbital compute, xAI and Terafab, with Moon and Mars ambitions accelerating on the back of NASA's newly pledged $20B lunar surface base. SpaceX is the most valuable private company in the world, and when it goes public, the largest IPO in history will belong to a space company. At a $1.75T valuation target, this transforms how the market values space infrastructure entirely. The flywheel detailed in our latest blog post is not just a SpaceX story. For years GPS alone was the pillar of space applications. Now GPS, GEOINT, and SatCom are converging at once across global industries and defense markets that are only beginning to take shape. That maturing infrastructure layer is enabling a whole new generation of applications to break out, entangled with the most cutting edge technology frontiers, Industrials, Physical AI, Robotics, Energy, Bio, Quantum, Cybersecurity, and more. There will be companies built on top of it that we cannot yet imagine. Finding that compounding logic is what separates the founders who build category-defining companies. The talent alone tells the story. The SpaceX alumni ecosystem has grown from $4.6B across 105 companies in early 2024 to $11.6B across 150 today, applying the same first principles culture to the world's hardest problems, helping build the industrial base the next era of the space economy will run on. The IPO will unleash a supercycle of unconstrained builders on top of that. Impossible to estimate where that number sits a decade from now. The implications will define generations. Just as every company became an internet company in the 2000s, every technology company will need a space strategy in the years ahead. For decades space has quietly underpinned the global economy. Lucky to have the kind of support that makes moments like this possible. 24 hours later, I watched Artemis II rise from Cape Canaveral, carrying America back to the Moon. I’m grateful for the path that led me here, including my time at Interlune, where I saw firsthand how much this next chapter depends on building a lasting presence beyond Earth. Looking ahead to what comes next under President Trump and Administrator Isaacman’s leadership. We’re just getting started, and I’m excited to play one small part in this mission alongside the team at NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Let’s get to work.
