Chad P Smith reposted thisChad P Smith reposted thisA very special Happy 50th Work Anniversary to Joey Nagli at our Auburn, WA branch! On July 16, 1974, Joey joined PGL (Palmer G. Lewis), which would become Huttig Building Products, and now Woodgrain. She began her journey with us as a Kardex/Clerical staff member before transitioning into a dual role, splitting her time between working the Kardex and as an Inside Sales Coordinator for the Olympic Peninsula territory, officially becoming a full time Inside Sales Associate in 1983. Joey worked from our then Bremerton branch location supporting our Olympic Peninsula customers. Today, 50 years later she continues with the Inside Sale staff supporting the Olympic Peninsula customers. Throughout the region and from our best customers she is known as the “Queen of the Peninsula.” Joey has been and remains both an asset to our company as well as the companies we service. To have reached the milestone of having worked for one company for 50 years is something extremely special. We are fortunate to have her on our team. Chad P Smith liked thisChad P Smith liked thisHe-Man is an HR Specialist? I never thought I'd see those words in the same sentence! But I just watched the new Masters of the Universe movie and was surprised to see Prince Adam as an HR person. I braced myself for the usual HR stereotype. Instead, he was in a training session (barely paying attention, but still), coaching an employee (not well, but again, still…), and describing himself as someone who's good at conflict resolution and de-escalating tension. I was happily surprised. Not because those activities define HR. They don't. But because I am accustomed to media portrayals of HR focusing on policy enforcement and lay-offs. It made me wonder if we're seeing a subtle shift in how our profession is viewed? Someday maybe we'll see the day when HR is portrayed as what it can be at its best: Helping organizations perform through better leadership, stronger systems, and more intentional ways of working. But until then, let me be the one to say it: HR, we have the power! (Said in a thunderous voice while holding a massive magical sword)

I spent the last week in a lot of conversations, both with other people in my life boat, “survivors”, and friends/family. I spent time reflecting on my thoughts and am ready to attempt crystalizing at least some of them. To start…this sucks - but in a good way. For my whole career, I’ve known that the passion in my work was directed at what I did and with whom more than where. Every employment I’ve had was at different companies, each in different industries. Each time, I grew to appreciate the products and the business problems they were attempting to solve. I became a reliable subject matter expert in each domain. I added new volumes to my personal library of knowledge and experience while providing my own flavor of thinking on how to organize chaos. The passion I gained stemmed from the relationships created and investing in the success of others, but all that evolved 4 years ago when I caught lightning in a bottle with ZeniMax Online Studios. I joined an industry in which I was a user. My thanks go to Daniel Speed, Will Unkart, and Jesse McAllister for giving me the opportunity. Thanks to people I had the pleasure of working with directly, including… Andrew Holdren, Jacob Geiman, Máté Matisz, Ben Uphoff, Adam Beach, Tristan Anderson, Jeff Olen, Peter Bereczky, Cheri White, Gregory Fick, Shawn Lindsey, Ali Mazeh, Brannen Graves, Sammi Weeks, Jade Kraus and so many others I can’t begin to enumerate. Having the opportunity to play even a small role as a fellow “architect of Tamriel” on The Elder Scrolls Online has been a dream fulfilled. And being surrounded by literally hundreds of people who share a deep passion of every possible aspect of the job/product/studio is a gift I presume most people will never have the chance to experience. So, yeah…this sucks. It sucks to lose your job. It sucks losing your job because of other people you’ve never seen, working in buildings you’ve never entered, trying to solve problems you had no hand in making, and who made unilateral decisions you had no way of influencing. That’s going to suck no matter what. BUT… it's a bittersweet feeling knowing a large part of that “suck” is because it's rooted in your actual passion and knowing you were part of something incredible. If I had the choice, of course I’d rather avoid it, but I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to be even a small part of something I can honestly say I care about - and will continue to care about. So what's next? I'm going to support our union and my fellow "life boat" passengers as best I can. I'm going to participate in various webinars and training courses to renew my PMP and Scrum certifications. I want to learn more about this "AI" thing people keep talking about. I'm going to support my wife and family by moving from "work from home Dad" to "stay at home Dad". And I'll recover. We'll recover. #xbox #layoffs #gaming #elderscrolls #zenimax #openforwork
