    𝐍𝐞𝐰 paper in press: 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐜𝐡-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐬 Assessment of negative symptoms in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) remains challenging with traditional clinical methods. Digital health technologies, including automated speech analysis, offer a potential solution, but progress has been hindered by heterogeneity in methods and uncertainty about which speech features have the greatest clinical utility. Michael Spilka, Sunny Tang and colleauges systematically evaluated 𝟑𝟖 acoustic and linguistic speech features in 𝟔𝟐 individuals with SSD across baseline and follow-up visits. The features were examined in relation to: 💡 Test–retest reliability 💡 Associations with clinician-rated negative symptoms 💡 Convergent and discriminant validity 💡 Specificity to negative symptom severity 💡 Clinical and demographic characteristics 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐜𝐡-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 Three features emerged as robust speech-based markers across tasks and visits: 💫 Speech proportion 💫 Speech rate 💫 Unfilled pauses These markers demonstrated adequate or better reliability, consistent associations with negative symptoms, discriminant validity, specificity, and no associations with antipsychotic medication or extrapyramidal symptoms. Speech rate additionally showed convergent validity with an alternative negative symptom measure and was the most reliable feature at the level of a single task administration.     A significant advance in pancreatic cancer treatment: the FDA has approved Rasonque (daraxonrasib), the first-in-class targeted therapy for adults with metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma who have received prior systemic therapy or are not candidates for multiagent systemic therapy. Daniel King, MD, PhD, director of research and development at the Northwell Cancer Institute's Center for Genomic Medicine says, "As an oncologist dedicated to pancreatic cancer care, I'm thrilled by the news: Daraxonrasib is now FDA approved! Showing a doubling of survival compared to chemo, this is an immense step forward. It reignites our hope and truly inspires us that our patients can live longer, fuller lives.     Great news as the summer winds down - our team, with our amazing collaborators Liron Sinvani and Alex Makhnevich, has received a new R01 from the The National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Aging (NIA): "Machine Learning Models to Identify and Predict Delirium in Hospitalized Older Adults." Delirium is missed in over 75% of hospitalized older adults, despite being dangerous, often preventable, and a known risk factor for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Our goal is to use machine learning and clinical wearables, to catch delirium early in the ED and predict who is at imminent risk during hospitalization enabling timely prevention, better outcomes, and lighter clinical workload.     It was a pleasure to have high school student Samarth Kasaraneni work in our lab this summer at The Feinstein Institutes, Northwell Health! Working closely with Dr. Amanda Loke, Samarth developed a novel quantification tool to track the movement and trajectories of colorectal cancer cells within a neuron-tumor co-culture preparation. His analysis of ECHO spinning-disk confocal time-lapse videos, using a combination of TrackMate and custom code, demonstrated that cancer cells consistently migrate towards peripheral sensory neurons over a 12-hour imaging period! #cancerneuroscience #NextGeneration

    Northwell Health and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory are proud to have helped lead an international research effort that developed more than 150 patient-derived cancer organoid models as part of the Human Cancer Model Initiative (HCMI). Published in Nature, the decade-long project resulted in 665 organoid models across 25 cancer types, now available to researchers worldwide. These next-generation models more closely reflect the biology of real patient tumors and may help accelerate discoveries in drug testing, tumor biology and more personalized cancer treatment strategies. This work highlights the power of collaboration across clinicians, scientists and patients and underscores how research partnerships can help move innovation from the lab toward better care.     After wrapping up an incredible summer at The Feinstein Institutes, I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to have worked alongside such an inspiring team and to continue contributing to our work remotely throughout the academic year. I’m especially thankful to Stavros Zanos for welcoming me into his lab and allowing me to learn, contribute, and grow as a researcher. Another special thank you to my fellow intern, Ella Kurtz, for making this summer such a fun and memorable one. I’m particularly grateful to Vasiliki Patsiou for being such an incredible mentor, for welcoming me into her project, and for trusting me to contribute to work that I learned so much from. Her guidance throughout the summer played a huge role in making this experience so impactful. I also want to thank Ishan Amin Khwaja, Naveen Jayaprakash, and Nicole Carpentiere for their support, mentorship, and the valuable insight they shared with me throughout the summer. This experience strengthened my appreciation for translational research and the incredible work that goes into connecting scientific discovery with improvements in patient care. I’m excited to stay involved with the team remotely and continue building on everything I learned this summer.

  • New research, published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (AJRCCM ) and led by Dr. Kei Hayashida & Dr. Lance B. Becker, shows that intravenous mitochondria transplantation (MTx) dramatically improves heart recovery and protects vital organs after cardiac arrest. Big picture 📸 Mitochondria are the "powerhouses" of our cells. After cardiac arrest, they're often damaged, leading to an energy crisis. MTx directly targets this, helping the heart pump stronger and safeguarding organs. In the video ⬇️ it shows Z-stack imaging of a neuronal cell following mitochondrial transplantation. Green indicates the endogenous mitochondria, while red indicates the transplanted donor mitochondria.
