Advances in prostate cancer care are helping change a long-standing challenge: balancing effective cancer treatment with preserving a patient’s quality of life. With innovations in multiparametric MRI, PSMA PET imaging and focal therapies, physicians can more precisely identify and target areas of prostate cancer, potentially preserving more of the prostate and the surrounding structures involved in urinary and sexual function. What drives a physician-scientist both at the bedside and in the lab? For Dr. Lily Dara, it comes down to improving patients’ lives. As a hepatologist with the USC Digestive Health Institute, part of Keck Medicine of USC, Dr. Dara specializes in the treatment and research of rare and complex liver diseases, including autoimmune liver diseases and drug-induced liver injury. Her approach to medicine is also deeply personal. One question she regularly shares with her fellows is: “What would you do if this patient was your mother? How would you want her to be treated?” That commitment to human connection extends beyond patient care. Through her research, Dr. Dara works to advance our understanding of liver disease and pursue discoveries with the potential to improve future treatments and outcomes.
