Congratulations to Thomas Duhen, Ph.D., associate member at Earle A. Chiles Research Institute and director of the Anti-Cancer Immune Response Laboratory on receiving a NIH R21 grant to investigate a newly identified mechanism in colorectal cancer. His research explores how colorectal tumors may weaken the body's natural immune response, helping scientists better understand why some cancers are able to evade the immune system. The findings could lead to new ways to improve immunotherapy and expand treatment options for people facing colorectal cancer. New ideas and strong partnerships are helping move cancer research forward. Providence Cancer Institute and Arizona State University have received a Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) Nina Nicolai Innovation in Collaboration Award to advance research aimed at improving cancer immunotherapy for patients with pancreatic cancer, one of the most challenging cancers to treat. The collaboration brings together Dr. Eric Tran of Providence Cancer Institute and Dr. Di Liu of Arizona State University to explore new mRNA vaccine technology that could help strengthen and extend the body's immune response against cancer. By combining expertise in immunotherapy and RNA engineering, the team hopes to advance new approaches that may improve outcomes for patients facing hard-to-treat cancers. More than 30 years ago, Dr. Hank Kaplan helped establish one of the nation's first breast cancer registries at Providence Swedish. The database has informed screening guidelines, supported groundbreaking studies and helped researchers better understand breast cancer and its treatment. Today, that legacy continues. Some of the most meaningful acts of care happen behind the scenes. Each year, Kadlec Auxilians in Richland, Wash., hand-sew between 9,000 and 10,000 pillows that are gifted to patients, offering comfort during what can often be challenging moments. During a recent visit to Kadlec, President and CEO Erik Wexler met with members of the Auxiliary sewing group to learn more about the extraordinary impact they make through their dedication and service.
