I’m proud to share this co-authored op-ed I wrote in partnership with Tiffany Benjamin, CEO of the Humana Foundation, published today in TIME. It’s entitled, “Boys Are Pulling Away. Mentorship Can Bring Them Back,” See, there is a lot happening with boys and young men in our country and it needs our attention. —-1 in 4 young men in America reports feeling deeply lonely on any given day. —-Two-thirds of men under 30 believe no one cares whether they're okay. —-Nearly 1 in 7 young men reports having no close friends �� nearly five times the rate it was in 1990. —-And since 2010, suicide rates among young men have risen by a third. These numbers are alarming and they represent boys in our communities – some we know and many others we don’t – who are quietly pulling away. And too often, we're missing the signs. Tiffany and I believe the conversation around boys and young men is one of the most important discussions and clear set of actions we should have right now. The Humana Foundation's new research report, "Strengthening Belonging for Underserved Boys," makes clear just how much worse this crisis is for boys already on the margins—across different backgrounds, experiences and geographies. At Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, we see these experiences in our mission everyday. The disconnection too many boys and young men feel who are seeking mentors in their lives—especially men. But also the magic and transformation that happens in a boy’s life when they find “their person” who is a friend to help guide them. They become more confident, healthy, well-adjusted and socially connected. Mentorship in essence turns feelings of helplessness into hopefulness. In my time leading this mission, I have seen a waiting list of 30,000 kids—mainly boys—shrink down because men have answered the call to volunteer, partners have mobilized people and investments to extend reach, and leaders in communities have collaborated to find holistic solutions. But we need more mentors and investment at scale. The bottom line is addressing the challenges facing boys is solvable when they have a community around them. And that community is all of us.
