Matthew Rayner shared thisWhat a great evening at the Growth Table last night, hosted by Blend! I hope to learn something practical and think of a new idea I can implement in my work, whilst making some new connections at these kind of events. All three goals were ticked last night ✅ Some insights I took from the evening: 🧠 How to not just talk a good game on AI (or doom-monger) but that you need to trial, test and implement at pace to augment your team. I've added diving deeper into Claude, exploring AskElephant and testing HubSpot breeze to my to do list. 🗣️ How getting Executive / Board-level social selling initiatives off the ground isn't easy, but it's an oft underutilised channel which needs focus, discipline and C-suite support. 💻 Shared war-stories about launching rebrands and building new websites with highs, lows and sleepless nights. 🍪 That compiling a definitive top 10 of biscuits is a lot harder than it sounds! Feel like you've been on my shoulder through numerous meetings over the last 5 years! Really it's about getting better at Marketing ourselves and our work......which we can only do by really understanding the the customer....Gary...and speaking in ways they understand.

Matthew Rayner reacted on thisMatthew Rayner reacted on thisI've never been one to think that a formal degree in Marketing is very helpful to the do job of Marketing. This is perhaps partly because I'm a snob, and in the UK the degree was considered slightly above coloring in, and because in the UK we think degrees that help people do a job are "vocational" and to be looked down on. It's WAY more prestigious ( and thus better) to have a Veblen degree like Classics, where you can be the most useless employee ever, for years. But I was still amazed by the Ipson/Mark Ritson work on the lack of understanding of Marketing, by people that work in Marketing. The questions are shockingly basic, on things like. - the 4P's of Marketing - the idea of positioning - What ATL advertising is, or ominchannel. The fact 2/3rds of people who WORK in Marketing failed the test explains how for years almost all meetings I've been in have be vague. - We talk about numbers with precision, but almost no one seems to know what they mean. - People using words like segmentation, positioning, attributes, personas, target audiences, interchangeably. - Few people using Qual and Quant knowingly - People asking questions about the tiny details, rather than ever taking on the big flaws. - Jargon, jargon everywhere - Lots of talk with three letter acronyms that almost nobody seemed to understand. - Lots of squirming if you ever tried to look under the hood of a black box process. And now it makes sense to me, the reason most meetings have been long winded, avoided making any decisions, didn't have good questions, failed to call bullshit on obvious nonsense. It's because, somehow, people didn't have the knowledge to be able to do this. I've always thought that marketing is one of the most important jobs in business. I felt that marketers should be on the board. Our job is to take care of the only thing that matters, a customer. Our role is the only one that brings them into the company. Maybe we should take our jobs a bit more seriously and learn to know what we're talking about. Have a dig around and look at the work that was done. It's crazy to see what people didn't know.

But on my 6am train into London this morning, watching the sun come up from the platform, I did have one of those moments and thought I'm lucky to do what I do. I get to meet people building brilliant companies. I get to speak to people stepping into career defining roles. Hopefully, in some small way, I get to have a positive impact on both. It’s easy to lose sight of that when life is busy, but I do think it’s worth occasionally taking a moment to feel grateful for the people you meet and the journey you’re on. Wishing everyone a great bank holiday weekend when it comes.

Matthew Rayner reacted on thisMatthew Rayner reacted on thisLast weekend I ran the Brighton Half Marathon in 1:59:16. Sub-2. Just. 🏃♂️ The preparation meant months of early mornings and evening runs through the dark, wet and cold of winter. Slowly building distance, consistency, and the belief that sub-2 might actually be possible. Then with just over a week to go, I picked up an injury and couldn’t run for 9 days leading into race day. Things were going well…until about 14km, when the injury came back. The final 7km quickly became less about pace and more about mental resilience. Just focusing on the next kilometre marker and keeping the sub-2 goal alive. A big thanks goes to my brother-in-law, Darren Whiting, who made it very clear that “I had to keep running” if we were going to make the sub-2 target. The last photo of us nearing the finish line telling two very different stories...😂 It reminded me a lot of working in data and AI. Big ambitions rarely go exactly to plan. Models fail. Projects stall. Strategies need to pivot. And sometimes the hardest part is the stretch near the end where you just have to push through the uncertainty and finish what you started. Success in this space, like endurance running, comes down to: • Consistency over time • Resilience when setbacks appear • Persistence when things get uncomfortable Three months ago I wasn’t a runner. Last weekend I finished a half marathon sub-2 hours. Not the perfect race, but a great reminder of what consistent effort (and a bit of external motivation) can achieve. #Leadership #Data #AI #Resilience #Persistence #HalfMarathon

Matthew Rayner reacted on thisMatthew Rayner reacted on thisIn December, I failed spectacularly. I was enrolled in the MiniMBA in Brand Management with Mark Ritson. I'm not a trained marketer. I kind of stumbled into marketing. But I did study brand attachment for my master's dissertation 15 years ago (don't ask me the results, I genuinely don't remember), but I've never had formal marketing training. I wanted to fix that. So, for 3 months, on top of work, I was reading, watching, and learning. I learned a lot. I also failed the optional but very fun simulation. Spectacularly. Why? Because I ignored the three things that stuck with me most. And I'm only choosing three because of number two on this list. 1. Diagnosis before anything else. Before strategy. Well before tactics. You have to figure out where you are and what problem you're actually solving. I think I always knew this instinctively, but Ritson gave me the tools to actually do it. I'm running customer interviews in the next few weeks to understand our brand associations. Better late than never. 2. Be choiceful. What you choose to do matters. What you choose not to do matters just as much. And you're never going to have perfect data or perfect information to make those choices. That's just how it is. Make the decision, commit to it, and move. This one changed how I think about my job day to day. It's permission to stop waiting for certainty that's never coming. 3. Give it time. For people to notice and remember your brand, it takes time. You have to make a decision and stick to its execution even when it feels like it's not working. I think in SaaS, we have this instinct where we run one campaign, it doesn't hit immediately, and we PIVOT. New strategy. New direction. Start over. But building or managing a brand doesn't work like that. The rewards only come if you hold long enough to let them compound. If you're a marketer who (like me) never had formal training, I can't recommend the miniMBA in Brand Management with Mark Ritson enough. It's the best thing I've ever done. Probably even better than my MSc in Applied Psychology. Definitely better than any other marketing course I've taken. Even if you crash the stock price of a fake brand as I did, I promise you’ll be a better marketer for it.

I was lucky enough to be part of the original team that helped to launch the MiniMBA in Marketing more than 10 years' ago with Mark Ritson. Back then, online education wasn't really a mainstream thing that people invested in so it really felt like we were breaking new ground. After watching the business continue to grow from afar, I'm getting stuck back in as the business enters a new era under new owners Brave Bison who are supporting the next chapter of product innovation.
