One of the most profound lines in Supernatural first aired 15 years ago, when Crowley clearly established how insightful and perceptive he was compared to everyone else on the show. Over the course of 15 years, Supernatural proved that the Winchester brothers, Sam and Dean, were more than capable of fending off any creature that dared to get in their way.
As professional hunters, initially reuniting in search of their missing father, Sam and Dean faced incredibly powerful villains. In the face of every new threat, the boys came out on top. However, not every threat in the series was equal, and there are some characters who managed to align themselves with the Winchesters before it was too late.
For instance, Crowley, a former crossroads demon who became the King of Hell, was one such character who initially had animosity towards the Winchesters before eventually having his own goals align with their mission and becoming a reluctant antihero who played an important part in saving the world. But before all of that, Crowley proved he could see what many others didn't.
After Crowley's Warning, Supernatural Villains Continued To Underestimate Sam & Dean For Another 9 Seasons
In Supernatural, season 6, episode 20, "The Man Who Would Be King," Crowley has a heart-to-heart with the angel, Castiel, where he begs Castiel to kill the Winchesters. He does this because he recognizes the immense threat they present to the entire supernatural world, including angels and demons, which is why he seeks Cass' help.
However, Castiel has already grown attached to the Winchesters, and so he outright rejects Crowley's plea and warns him that if he does anything to the Winchesters, he will intervene. Finally, Cass half-heartedly tells Crowley not to worry, to which Crowley responds emphatically;
"Don't worry- what, like Lucifer didn't worry? Or Michael, or Lilith, or Alistair, or Azazel didn't worry?! Am I the only game piece on the board who doesn't underestimate those denim-wrapped nightmares!?"
It's impressive to note that this is only the sixth season of the show, and by this point in the series, barely over a third of the way through, the Winchesters have racked up a surprising number of major players on their list of extinguished rivals. It's also interesting to note that all of the names Crowley provides are demons and angels.
The Winchesters have done more than put down demons at this point in their journey, having also turned their attention to corrupt angels and archangels, all of which they managed to overpower and eliminate. So, Crowley was right to be worried, and his observations meant he was more prepared than most as the Winchesters continued on their journey to eliminate the dark forces from the world.
Crowley's Line Proves Supernatural Killed Him Off Too Soon
This pivotal moment in the series also highlights just how much of an asset Crowley was, and how much potential there was for his character to play a larger part in the series. Actor Mark Sheppard, who plays the character in Supernatural, had already racked up an impressive list of credits appearing in major franchises throughout his career, though Crowley was perhaps his most notable character.
Sheppard brought gravitas and intensity to the role, as well as nuance and an evolution for the character while playing the character in just one fifth of the overall episodes. And ultimately, the character only appeared between the fifth and twelfth seasons of the series, meaning he was absent for important chunks of the story.
Crowley was easily one of the best characters in the show, and Sheppard deserved the opportunity to dive deeper into the character's story, providing more of those spectacular insights and his signature sharp-witted remarks. Unfortunately, after Crowley's heroic demise, the character never returned, unlike so many other characters in the world of Supernatural who defy death time after time.
