As Stranger Things season 5 prepares for the end, Netflix is making history by breaking its no. 1 rule.
According to Puck, the Stranger Things series finale will get a theatrical release on New Year's Eve, the same day that the episode premieres on Netflix. The two-hour episode is expected to be screened on AMC and other movie chains.
This comes after the Duffer Brothers recently suggested a theatrical release for the series finale, but that pitch was rejected by Netflix COO Bela Bajaria. The report does state that the deal has not been signed, but this movie will happen.
If this deal becomes official, this would mark the first time in Netflix history that any of their original shows earns a theatrical release. It's not uncommon for major television series to screen in theaters, such as the case with several Game of Thrones episodes during its original run, including "The Watchers on the Wall" and "The Children." However, this report is particularly surprising due to Netflix's anti-theater stance in recent years.
Back in April 2025, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos commented that streaming was the future, while the theater experience was an "outmoded idea." During a time when the box office has been rather erratic, the executive argued that audiences "like to watch movies at home, thank you. The studios and the theaters are duking it out over trying to preserve this 45-day window that is completely out of step with the consumer experience of just loving a movie.”
However, since his comment, it appears that Netflix has reversed course in its position. In just the last few months, several of their original movies have landed a theatrical release, including Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein on October 17 and Wake Up Dead Man on November 26. Both will get a wide release for a limited window before releasing on Netflix on November 7 and December 12, respectively.
The most shocking move was a few months ago, when Netflix set up a sing-along event for KPop Demon Hunters. As the fantasy musical became an overnight sensation and eventually overtook the title as the most popular Netflix movie in history with over 325 million views, the streamer put up the movie two months after its streaming release.
It set a record first for Netflix, becoming the no. 1 film at the box office, although just for the weekend of August 23–24. KPop Demon Hunters is getting another theatrical re-release on Halloween, while the brand is pushing for award consideration, especially for the hit song "Golden."
While Netflix seems to be embracing the theater experience after all, the decision behind Stranger Things is unprecedented. However, it makes sense since the sci-fi show is one of Netflix's most popular shows and has consistently done well on streaming. Additionally, Stranger Things season 5 has become the most anticipated event since it was announced that these would be the final episodes to conclude the Upside Down and Hawkins arc.
Audiences are now preparing for the end, with season 5 splitting its episodes into three volumes, which all coincide with major holidays. The first four episodes will drop on November 26 during Thanksgiving Day, the next three will release on Christmas Day, and the final episode will air on New Year's Eve. With just a month left before Stranger Things ends for good, viewers now have another opportunity to check out the series finale, this time on the big screen.
