Star Wars Outlaws: The Most Impressive Switch 2 Port Yet?

It was originally thought that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade on the Nintendo Switch 2 might be the best third-party port on the console, but it's turning out that another game might have better performance, according to Digital Foundry. FF7 Remake impresses on Switch 2 with crisp visuals and a smooth 40 FPS, but it seems the full power of Nintendo's latest hybrid has yet to be fully tapped.

According to an analysis by Digital Foundry, Star Wars Outlaws on Switch 2 performs exceptionally well, boasting ray-tracing, a stable 30 FPS, and high-level visuals, despite it being a weaker console than others on the market. Digital Foundry calls it "the most impressive Switch 2 port to date" (via Nintendo Life).

Ubisoft Put In A Lot Of Effort

The announcement of Star Wars Outlaws for Switch 2 turned quite a few heads. The game didn't perform particularly well commercially or critically, but it's clear Ubisoft has gone to great care to make sure the Switch 2 version is the best place to play. Despite some cutbacks in draw distances and resolution, the Star Wars Outlaws Switch 2 port is impressive.

The game utilizes DLSS technology to upscale the resolution to 1080p in handheld mode, and the game's menus in docked mode almost hit 60 FPS. Putting it side-by-side with the Xbox Series S version of the game (the closest modern console in power to the Switch 2), it's actually hard to tell the difference between the two at first glance.

Third-party ports for the Switch were not exactly great. Hogwarts Legacy, for example, highlighted the console's struggles with frame rate, colors, load times, and more. It seems, so far, that Switch 2 ports are being taken much more seriously than previously. That isn't too surprising, given the Switch 2's monumental commercial success and popularity.

With Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, and now Star Wars Outlaws all impressing on the Switch 2, the console is in a great position to deliver quality third-party ports. Hopefully, developers will continue to showcase what's possible with the device moving forward.
