Supermassive Games' forthcoming horror title, The Quarry, will launch without multiplayer options in tow, the developer has announced. A spiritual successor to beloved PS4 exclusive Until Dawn, The Quarry represents Supermassive's latest stab at the teen slasher genre. The studio went all out for this particular project, too, bringing in several horror movie veterans to fill out its star-studded cast. Scream star David Arquette counts among the cast members, as does Aliens' Lance Henriksen and Lin Shay of Nightmare on Elm Street and Insidious fame.
The development crew unveiled The Quarry this past spring, promising a choice-based narrative experience that appeals to those who love teen horror. Players who hop aboard the spooky adventure will take the role of nine different summer camp counselors at Hackett's Quarry, each of whom must eventually come face-to-face with untold horrors. Like several of Supermassive's other titles, The Quarry will boast a multiplayer mode that allows up to seven friends to watch along and cast votes about character and narrative choices. The studio previously announced couch co-op as well, which will involve users in a group making decisions for a camp counselor of their choice.
When The Quarry hits store shelves for PC and consoles in the next couple of weeks, it won't feature one key component - multiplayer. Supermassive Games has confirmed as much in a recent social media post, telling fans that online gameplay options should become available in a post-launch update by Friday, July 8. According to the developer, the decision to delay multiplayer was to ensure it launches in the best state possible.
This news may put a damper on the anticipation for some, but players can still expect to enjoy the slasher in other modes. Going it alone will always serve as a viable option, of course. In addition, The Quarry's gameplay-less Movie Mode makes for a unique experience wherein users control the terror insofar as tweaking choices about each character's fate and how they'll respond to the world around them.
Barring its support-related efforts on Little Nightmares 2, the upcoming horror title marks Supermassive's first game outside of the Dark Pictures universe since 2019. Three entries from the Bandai Namco-published anthology series have already landed in stores, including The Man of Medan, Little Hope, and House of Ashes. The next Dark Pictures adventure, The Devil in Me, should launch sometime this year, though it still lacks a firm due date.
The Quarry comes to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on June 10.
