He says exactly this when talking to Lemar earlier in the show then again when they're with Sam and Bucky. He also directly says that he NEVER was trying to be Steve either but the latter two just ignore that and keep accusing him of it.
That the show had Sam be far more sympathetic and open to Karlii than a fellow vet who had just lost his partner in a violent manner disgusted me. Not gonna lie.
