One of the coolest video game reveals in years has to have been the brand-new Divinity video game from Baldur's Gate 3 studio Larian Studios. What started with a mysterious statue in the desert ended with a trailer for a sequel I never expected.
If you've never played any of the Divinity games before, such as Divinity: Original Sin or Divinity: Original Sin 2, they're classic RPGs in the vein of Baldur's Gate 3. There's plenty of depth, tactical combat, and loads of freedom. Larian has promised the new Divinity will be bigger than anything the studio has done before, which, given the scope of Baldur's Gate 3, is almost terrifying.
When Will The New Divinity Release?
There's absolutely no word yet
Unfortunately, there's no word on a release date for the new Divinity yet, but the fact the trailer we were shown at The Game Awards was entirely CG implies it's not exactly close. Let's take a look at the Baldur's Gate 3 release timeline to try and get a clearer picture, shall we?
Baldur's Gate 3 was officially announced back in 2019 as part of a Google Stadia (remember that?) event. The game's first act was then released into Early Access in 2020.
While this obviously sounds like not too long a wait at all, it's worth noting the version of Baldur's Gate 3 players got in 2020 was nothing like the version we have today. It was thanks to Early Access that the game was shaped into the critically acclaimed monster it was when it finally got a full release three years later in 2023.
Now, we have no idea whether Larian will go the Early Access route for Divinity. However, given how well it worked for Baldur's Gate 3, I think it'll be safe to assume it'll happen. This means you could well be playing Divinity much sooner than you expected, although it's worth stressing that it will not be the finished game.
Assuming Divinity keeps to a similar timeline as Baldur's Gate 3 (and that's optimistic, given Larian has explicitly said it's a bigger game), then we won't see a full release/console release for Divinity until 2030 at the earliest. You might want to strap in for a wait, basically.
The Wait Will Be Worth It

Larian Studios has certainly proved time and time again that it knows ball when it comes to RPGs, so I'm more than willing to give Divinity as much time in the oven as it needs. I would probably abandon any hope of seeing the new game come to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S mind you, especially if it's going to be in development for the next few years.
Maybe I'll kill some time by starting another playthrough of Baldur's Gate 3. That should take at least a year off if I try to do everything.
