Destiny 2 has been going strong for over eight years now, but the end of an era is finally arriving. Over the course of its lifetime, Destiny 2 has evolved and reinvented itself repeatedly, going so far as to remove earlier campaigns from the game to replace them with revamped content.

For Destiny 2 players, the journey has had plenty of ups and downs, from the acclaim garnered by the Witch Queen expansion to the more divisive Lightfall. Most recently, The Final Shape brought plenty of fans back into the fold, with some considering it the best Destiny 2 release to date.

On the official Bungie website, Destiny 2 announced that "the final live-service content update," called Moment of Triumph, will arrive on June 9, 2026. The studio promises that, like the original Destiny, the game will continue to be playable, but active development of new content will cease.

The final update will expand on the annual Moments of Triumph celebration, highlighting "experiences from across Destiny 2." This includes returning features like "a newly refreshed Director" and the permanent addition of a new Pantheon mode with "a fresh slate of bosses to challenge and overcome."

Crucible will receive three new game modes — Arena, Glass Cannon, and Software: Third-Person Abilities Only. Sparrow Racing League will also return as a permanent mode, with tracks from the original Destiny along with a new racing space. There should also be plenty to earn in the new update, with the return of Legendary Marks, new and revamped weapons and armors, and more.

For those who still have some catching up to do, Destiny 2 will release a bundle of all previous content packs on June 9. Individual packs and expansions are also set to receive permanent discounts, making it easier to experience the full scope of the game without emptying your pockets.

The sunsetting of Destiny 2 comes months after the final update for Halo Infinite, bringing the end of an era for two major online shooters with Bungie DNA. While the studio was no longer involved in the Halo series, the groundwork laid by Bungie in the original Halo trilogy remained the cornerstone of Halo Infinite's online gameplay.

At any rate, Destiny 2 will be going out with a bang, so the final update should feel more like a celebration than a funeral. As for what lies ahead, Bungie's post suggests that the final Destiny 2 update will be followed by "a new beginning for Bungie," with the studio turning its attention to "incubating [its] next games."
