Borderlands 4 may finally arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2 roughly five months after its debut on other platforms, if its leaked release date is to be believed. The looter shooter series' fourth mainline installment first hit the scene in September 2025, garnering favorable critical reviews but suffering a review bomb on Steam for poor optimization.
The Switch 2 version of the game has yet to be properly evaluated, but a delay to its original release date indicated that more work was needed. Portuguese gaming retailer GamingReplay has now listed Borderlands 4 for the Switch 2 with a release date of February 27, 2026. This puts its Switch 2 launch just over a month away, relatively soon considering the date has not been officially confirmed.
Portuguese Retailer Says Borderlands 4 Comes To Switch 2 On February 27
Developer Gearbox Software and publisher 2K had originally intended on releasing the Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 on October 3, just under a month after it arrived on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. When the delay was announced, the official reasoning was to ensure Gearbox could "deliver the best possible experience" with "additional development and polish time."
Leaked release dates should always be taken with a grain of salt. Retailers listing information before it's supposed to be publicly known happens fairly often in gaming, but there's no guarantee that GamingReplay's date is correct. It would be a welcome surprise, coming so soon after an indefinite delay, but it's also unexpected given the transparency regarding the Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 thus far.
You Might Want To Wait For Reviews On This One
Despite Borderlands 4 being a major third-party release for the Switch 2, there are reasons for caution regarding the port. Most obvious is the delay itself. There were reported issues with developers receiving Switch 2 dev kits, but the announcement of the delay came less than two weeks before the original release date for the Switch 2 port. A game getting pushed back just before release doesn't exactly inspire confidence.
There is also some concern that the Switch 2 version will inherit many of the performance issues from other platforms, and potentially turn out even worse. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said last July that the Switch 2 version will "be mostly around 30 fps," with performance hits during "intense combats or if hosting a multiplayer game in handheld mode."
The Switch 2 is clearly not as powerful as the other consoles Borderlands 4 has released on, but a port failing to maintain 30 frames per second is not a good sign for the rest of its technical ability. Until Gearbox or 2K say otherwise, the leaked release date of February 27 for Borderlands 4 on Switch 2 is not set in stone, but it's only a matter of time before we find out how well it runs on Nintendo's handheld.
