In the year of our lord 2025, it would appear Bloodborne is officially bigger than it's ever been. So, I ask you: if Bloodborne is truly back in such a big way... where the heck is that sequel we've all been asking for?
Bloodborne originally released on PlayStation 4 on March 24, 2015. Despite being widely regarded as one of the best PlayStation exclusives of all time, the game's 10th anniversary has gone largely ignored. This, despite the fact the so-called cult classic isn't so cult anymore.
Bloodborne Is Bigger Than Ever
The numbers don't lie
According to new data from analysts Alinea Analytics, Bloodborne has seen some seriously staggering player numbers over the years. It has apparently sold an estimated 9.3 million copies since its initial release on PlayStation 4, which is... fine.
However, the overall player count has since hit 16 million after another 7 million players picked up the game via PlayStation Plus Extra. They also point out that Elden Ring led to an "influx" of new Bloodborne players, which makes sense.
Now, I want to make clear that I'm by no means an expert. But I feel like if Sony were to release Bloodborne on Steam? I'm not saying they could double that number, but it almost certainly wouldn't hurt.
It's worth pointing out that, while these numbers are strong, Bloodborne is definitely one of the "weaker" PlayStation exclusives in terms of sales.
With the recent re-release, Days Gone just hit 9 million sales. This is another game Sony doesn't really want to roll the dice on again. On the one hand, it got to the 9 million mark a lot quicker than Bloodborne. On the other hand? Days Gone actually got a re-release, and Sony/PlayStation acknowledge the existence of Days Gone a heck of a lot more than they ever have Bloodborne.
So, Where The Heck Is Bloodborne 2?
It'll never be enough
While Bloodborne is bigger than it's ever been, it'll probably never be big enough to justify a sequel from PlayStation. The continued lack of PC port or 60fps update is, however, baffling.
One Reddit user argued:
"They're sitting on a goldmine, twiddling their thumbs — I don't understand why Sony are so reluctant to update it for PS5 or put out a PC port, either of which could easily double the sales. I mean hell, people want it so bad they've put in insane amounts of work to make PS4 emulation of it viable to the point it even runs on something like the Steam Deck and STILL Sony refuses to step in and take matters into their own hands. At this point, I'm convinced there's some IP rights related legal f*ckery going on here the way Sony is just sitting on it refusing to do anything."
If you're desperate to enjoy some new-gen Bloodborne action and don't want to die of old age before an official release, there are plenty of unofficial options you can hunt down. I'm certainly not saying you should do that. I'm just saying you could. If you wanted to.
