Warning! Spoilers to Batman #105 ahead!
Ever since the mysterious Ghost-Maker appeared in Gotham City, he's made quite an impact on the Bat-Family. The new vigilante revealed that he was Bruce Wayne's former friend who fought him frequently during Bruce's training that became the building blocks for Batman. As his intelligence, skills, and tools appear on par with the Dark Knight, Batman #105 reveals that Ghost-Maker was at the beginning and the end of Bruce's training, interrupting the prequel to Batman: Year One for one final confrontation.
In the issue by James Tynion IV with art by Carlo Pagulayan and Alvaro Martinez, Batman is dealing with keeping the vigilante Clownhunter from killing Harley Quinn while trying to prove his old nemesis' wrong regarding his opinion about Bruce's methods in protecting Gotham. The issue starts off with a flashback of Bruce leaving Argentina where Ghost-Maker appears, telling Bruce he's not ready to return to his hometown and that he predicts he'll die in vain, leaving his beloved promise unfulfilled and wasting all those years he spent training. The two former friends argue, both unwilling to compromise or back down from their point of view, until it gets physical, concluding with their agreement to stay out of each other's respective cities, never to see or meet with each other again.
Having been there at the early stages of Bruce's training, it was only fitting that Ghost-Maker is there as Bruce closes that chapter of his life with a new one on the horizon. Ghost-Maker believes both he and Bruce are crazy, broken individuals who see the world for what it is and have spent years learning how to make it better, not for money or glory but because they have the abilities to do so. He predicts Bruce's death because he's trying to fulfill a child's request, a black and white promise in a world that is nothing but grey and the only way Bruce will ever be free is if he lets go of that obligation and everything that Gotham represents. The future Batman refuses his offer to collaborate and when he's called a coward, he accuses Ghost-Maker of actually being sick, with his anger toward Bruce stemming from his refusal to become broken like him. This provokes Ghost-Maker to strike Bruce and later to agree to their deal of avoiding each other.
In some ways, Ghost-Maker was actually right. In Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's Batman: Year One, Bruce returned to Gotham and his first attempt at vigilantism almost ended in his death, stabbed and shot by the very people he sought to protect or work with. However, he would find his inspiration in a bat that crashed through his study window, investing his skills and training into becoming an urban legend that sought to strike fear in the hearts of criminals. Working alongside James Gordon, who arrived in Gotham around the same time Bruce did, they team-up to loosen the grip organized crime and corruption had over Gotham. Although many would criticize his methods over the years, Batman became a force to be reckoned with an extensive network of allies and resources to help Bruce in his never-ending war against the same kind of evil that took his parents.
Years later, Batman and his original partner Dick Grayson would cross paths with Ghost-Maker, marking the first time they had seen each other since Argentina. Although that interaction didn't go as well, Bruce admitted that despite Ghost-Maker's arrogance and their history, he still missed his friend. One could argue that Ghost-Maker's confrontation years earlier was more him trying to look out for Bruce instead of a fight, hoping to dissuade his former friend from getting in over his head and dying before he reached his full potential. Although nothing could apparently stop Bruce Wayne's destiny to become Batman, the same could be said about the presence of Ghost-Maker in his life, returning to haunt the Dark Knight until they were friends once again.
