Police Computer

The Police Computer is an interactive computer found on board most law enforcement vehicles in Grand Theft Auto IV, Episodes from Liberty City, and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.

In GTA IV, when the player is stationary in any police vehicle, they can access the police computer by pressing the button (PlayStation 3), the button (Xbox 360), or the key (PC), allowing the player to access four LCPD functions. The computer uses Pro Tech software.

This allows the player to perform Vigilante-style side missions (only in GTA IV and GTA Chinatown Wars).

Players can search a subset of the main LCPD Database for criminals. There are 54 listed profiles: the 30 Most Wanted plus 24 others. Some may not be searchable until certain points of the game and some may become unsearchable later. Players can search using an image (as seen in Portrait of a Killer) or by name. An on-screen keyboard is displayed, although PC users can simply type in a name using their keyboard. When executing the search, 51 of the 55 mugshots will be rapidly randomly cycled through multiple times for 6 seconds (357 individual mugshot transitions will play). If the player is permitted to access that profile at that time, the search result will appear, otherwise "Search Failed" will appear and the player will be automatically returned to the search screen.

View a borough-specific list of the most wanted list and hunt them down. This is effectively an enhanced version of the Vigilante side mission.

Although the police computer is assumed to be standard on all road-based law enforcement vehicles (except bikes), this is not the case as certain models do not come equipped with it; a significant number of law enforcement vehicles in Grand Theft Auto IV may also lack an actual police computer model in their interior despite allowing the player to access one.
