Modo is a clothing store in Grand Theft Auto IV, Episodes from Liberty City and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars located in North Holland, Algonquin, Liberty City.

Description

[edit | edit source]

Located on the northwest corner of Exeter Avenue and Vauxite Street, Modo primarily sells sportswear and casual clothing that are considered to fall in the "mid-range" price category, halfway between the Russian Shop and Perseus. Modo's presentation is generally simple but tidy, with neatly organised rows of wardrobes. The cashier is a well-dressed young man named Mike. Unless Niko Bellic walks into the store wearing Modo clothes, the cashier will comment on his clothing, with mocking remarks like Niko looking like he was "in a Binco explosion", or was a past resident of Alderney.

The cashier can be scared away if the player physically attacks or otherwise threatens him. Money worth from $9 to $199 can be also taken from the cash register. The alarm will go off if the player shoots around or opens the cash register, but only when the cashier is alive and still in the shop. Either way, a one-star wanted level will be triggered.

Like other clothing stores in Grand Theft Auto IV, Modo cannot be entered in The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. Similarly, while the store does appear in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, it is inaccessible.

The radio station that plays inside is the The Classics 104.1.

Influence

[edit | edit source]

Modo may be inspired by the Sweden-based international clothing retail chain H&M. 'Modo' could be a reference to the word "moda", which means "fashion" in various languages, namely Turkish, Polish, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, Bulgarian, Russian, Ukrainian, Slovenian and Serbo-Croatian.

The exterior design is likely based on the pre-2019 design of a VIM outlet located at 2239 3rd Avenue in East Harlem, Manhattan, New York City.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • It is possible to enter Modo in The Ballad of Gay Tony through a glitch and cheats. If the player spawns a Comet inside Modo's door through a cheat and then jumps onto the car and through the door, the player will find themselves inside Modo. The player can play QUB3D inside on the QUB3D machine but other than that, the store is non-interactive. To get out, the player has to kill themselves, reload a save file or replay a mission through the phone (if the story has been completed). This video shows how to accomplish this.
