Mythic Uniques got completely reworked in Diablo 4 with the release of Season of Undeath Awakening. Instead of having a list of Mythic Unique items, Mythic itself has now become a rarity tier, and every Unique in Diablo 4 can now become a Mythic item. Of course, this brings with it some changes to the existing Mythic Uniques, and the Mythic rarity itself holds new implications for gearing and buildcrafting. If you're not sure how this new system works, here's a breakdown.
Diablo 4: Mythic Tier, Explained
In past seasons, Mythic Uniques referred to a specific set of powerful items with extremely low drop rates. These served as Diablo 4's chase items, and a number of them served as capstones for many builds in the game. As of Season of Undeath Awakening, any piece of Unique gear can now become a Mythic Unique, and the items on the old list of Mythic Uniques have been downgraded into regular Uniques.
What Happened to Mythic Items?
For example, the rare Heir of Perdition in Diablo 4 can now drop as a regular Unique — this helmet now has weaker stats than before, but in exchange, it is now also more common. On the surface, it may seem like the new Mythic tier system nerfed all the old Mythic Uniques in the game, but there is a way to upgrade them back up to their original splendor (or even better). This change also means that the old Mythic Unique items now roll random affixes, but at the same time, they can now be modified using the Horadric Cube's Focused and Chaotic Reroll options.
In Season of Undeath Awakening, actual Mythic items now have the following properties:
- All of their affixes have max-rolled stats
- Unique item powers are 30% stronger
- Mythics are always Ancestral in quality
Basically, Mythic Uniques went from being an exclusive list of uber-strong items into a rarity tier that can only be reached by Unique items. Mythic Uniques still have extremely low drop rates, but players can now upgrade regular Uniques into Mythical ones via the Horadric Cube.
You can only equip one crafted Mythic Unique at a time, but you can use multiple Mythics that dropped naturally.
What Does This Mean for Farming and Buildcrafting?
This change drastically opens up the number of builds you can make on your character, as it shifts power towards generic/class-specific Uniques by a noticeable amount. Sure, using a Grandfather sword might do wonders for your DPS, but an Anathema of the Primes with perfect affixes and a 30% stronger unique effect might be the better option if you want to build an Archdemon Warlock, for example.
Also, now that Mythic Uniques have random affixes, they can potentially end up being much stronger than the ones from previous seasons. Of course, this also means that there's a lot more RNG involved when it comes to farming Uniques in Diablo 4. If your build absolutely needs a Mythic Harlequin Crest, then you'll need to find one with affixes that match your build. This increases the grind for perfect gear significantly, as getting the perfect set of affixes involves tons of luck and/or an equally large amount of Horadric Cube resources.
You can re-roll bad affixes on Uniques and Mythic Uniques by visiting any Occultist.
