Developer Insomniac Games revealed an exciting Marvel's Wolverine update that is complete with Jean Grey and her powers, a teased run-in with Sabretooth, and a lot of intense violence when it comes to combat. The footage shows Wolverine sneaking through an abandoned area while cybernetic-enhanced mercenaries are transporting mutants against their will. Jean Grey jumps in to help the kidnapped mutants, making way for Wolverine and Jean to fight side-by-side in a heart-pounding team-up. The combat looks almost inspired by God of War, while the sneak peek at Sabretooth revealed that Wolverine is going to be running into even more iconic X-Men.

Logan's powers were on full display in this State of Play gameplay preview, and one combat section that involved a lot of car-based fighting looked reminiscent of games like Uncharted. Based on the footage, it looks like Jean Grey is going to be a companion character in a few key parts of Marvel's Wolverine's story. That wasn't the only good news that Insomniac Games' State of Play window had in store for gamers, though. The Marvel's Wolverine's release date was once again confirmed to be September 15, and pre-orders were officially announced.

So far, the major X-Men characters confirmed for Marvel's Wolverine are Jean Grey, Sabretooth, Omega Red, and Mystique, which raises questions about whether there will be any other heavy hitters revealed to be part of the lineup when the game is released. Marvel's Wolverine's companion characters and enemies are clearly trying to include some of the names that are most closely associated with Logan, so it will be interesting to see if other X-Men staples like Professor X and Magneto make an appearance.

Since Marvel's Wolverine is going to be a more linear narrative-driven game, it's going to be a fascinating change of pace. The linear design combined with a stacked roster and God of War-like combat makes Marvel's Wolverine one of the most exciting releases of the year.
