Atari and Digital Eclipse have announced Toy Story: Retro Roundup and Toy Story 3: Complete Edition, which will be released on modern platforms later this year. The original Toy Story debuted in theaters in 1995, and the film was accompanied by video game adaptations on several platforms. In the decades since, the Toy Story characters have starred in several games, while also appearing in games alongside other Disney and Pixar properties, such as Disney Dreamlight Valley.
Toy Story 5 will pit toys against technology, and this time around, there won't be a video game adaptation. Disney has largely moved away from putting out adaptations to coincide with the release of its films, instead focusing on games that expand on the worlds of its properties. The days of tie-in adaptations are largely a thing of the past, replaced instead by standalone games like Star Wars Outlaws and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Still, those eager to play some Toy Story games will have an option later in the year.

Toy Story: Retro Roundup is an upcoming compilation featuring 11 older games, including adaptations of the first two movies, as well as Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, and Toy Story Racer. Curiously, the collection will also include A Bug's Life. The Toy Story 2 game has many passionate fans, and the collection could introduce it to a new generation of players. In addition to faithful versions of these games, interviews and behind-the-scenes material will be included. Toy Story 3: Complete Edition was also announced, and will offer a remaster of the 2010 game from Avalanche Software. Both Toy Story: Retro Roundup and Toy Story 3: Complete Edition will be released on October 15.
Fans that would prefer to purchase just Toy Story: Retro Roundup or Toy Story 3: Complete Edition will have the option of doing so. However, the two will be offered together in physical collections that will be available on PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. The games will still come to Xbox, but not in a physical format. Sales of physical games hit a record low last year, and Xbox Series X/S in particular has struggled, so it's not surprising that Atari elected to stick with digital versions on those platforms.
While licensed games are often a mixed bag, there are plenty of reasons for Toy Story fans to be excited about these releases. Toy Story 3's toy box mode served as the inspiration for Disney Infinity, and the game was well-regarded upon its release. The games based on the original Toy Story film were also praised at the time, in large part due to their authenticity to the CGI in the movie. The bonus material should also be a selling point. The trailer for Toy Story: Retro Roundup shows several people that provided interview material, including Jim Hanks, who provides the voice of Woody in the games, in place of his brother, Tom Hanks.

Digital Eclipse has made several collections over the years, and the team is appreciated for their work on compilations like Atari 50. With the team in charge of both Toy Story: Retro Roundup and Toy Story 3: Complete Edition, fans should have much to look forward to. There might not be a Toy Story 5 game anytime soon, but getting a set of remasters and re-releases could be a better deal.
