When The Division 2 players reach Level 30 or arrive in New York, their Agent can hyper-focus on a Specialization, which is essentially thematic playstyles with unique Signature Weapons, Skills, and Grenade types, among others. This selection serves as the perfect start of an Agent's endgame, as their choice of Specialization cements their preferred gameplay style. Whether it's fighting from long range, absurdly close, or with a ridiculous amount of explosives, there's a Specialization for every player.
The game currently offers six Specializations, all of which can be played interchangeably. However, players still need to upgrade their Specialization's dedicated trees one unlockable at a time, forcing them to lock in a specific focus. When push comes to shove, just which Specialization should you prioritize?
Obviously, most people made their choice a long time ago, but new players are still discovering The Division 2. Hopefully, this article will be helpful once they arrive at this point in a run.
6 Firewall
Up Close And Personal Build Perfect For PVP

- Signature Weapon: K8-JetStream Flamethrower applies Burn and fire damage to anything in its radius
- Skill Variant: Striker Shield allows weapon use while deployed, giving allies behind it some damage boost
- Cluster Grenade: Adds burst damage to the initial grenade blast as it separates into clusters
The Firewall Specialization in The Division 2 is perfect for players who want to walk the fine line between heavy-duty tanks and frontline DPS. Key to their kit are two elements: the K8-JetStream Flamethrower that Burns targets and forces Normal enemies to flail in a frenzy, as well as the Striker Shield that can buff the damage of allies behind it based on the number of enemies in front of Firewall. The Cluster Grenade is an added bonus, giving much-needed burst damage to finish off enemies fast. As a last resort, the Firestarter Shotgun with flammable bullets can finish any job the Firewall couldn't.
Due to their flame motif, it's no surprise the Firewall's kit majorly focuses on boosting the Flamethrower's damage at short distances (Firewall Tactical Link), boosting Burn damage-over-time (Enriched Magnesium Formula), and Burn-on-armor break (Fiery Response). Beyond the Flamethrower, Firewalls can dish out Assault Rifles with damage boosts (E.M.I.) should they have to fight longer distances. This aggressive kit makes the Firewall being incentivized to burn enemies up close can definitely provide a change of pace.
Use The Firewall? Get Down And Dirty In Melee
In a game where there's barely any answer to enemies in melee situations except to make distance, the Firewall being incentivized to burn enemies up close can definitely provide a change of pace. The emphasis on melee is made evident in a skill tree that provides heal-on-kill (Frontline Recovery), 200% recovery with kits (Extracellular Matrix Mesh), and bonus armor when taking cover (Bull Rush). However, compared to other Specializations, the Firewall has only ever seen very effective use cases with builds that focus on Fire damage.
Many of the Firewall's benefits trigger in extremely close ranges, something that can get players overwhelmed quickly if they're not careful.
5 Demolitionist
Wreck Enemy Formation With AOE

- Signature Weapon: M32A1 Grenade Launcher
- Skill Variant: Artillery Turret that uses mortars to affect wider areas
- Fragmentation Grenade: Apply Bleed to damaged foes
Considered as masters of inciting chaos, the Demolitionist is perfect for no-holds-barred playstyles in The Division 2. With the M32A1 Grenade Launcher, they're able to launch more grenades (M406 HE Grenades) in quick succession, allowing them to cover more area and enemies. If successive grenade fire isn't enough, their Artillery Turret can provide covering fire to a directed location so the Demolitionist can control the carnage they're creating. To add salt to the wound, they also come with a Fragmentation Grenade that inflicts Bleed damage-over-time on top of burst damage.
This "everything-go-boom" playstyle is incentivized with a kit that enhances damage (Explosive Ordinance) to foes away from cover (Demolitionist Tactical Link), while keeping the Demolitionist safe with Burn resistance (Incombustible), armor kits that also grant weapon handling boosts (Stimulant Patch), and receiving less crits when actively engaging foes (Vital Protection). Beyond the grenade launcher, the Demolitionist can pepper through enemies with increased LMG damage (Onslaught, Spray And Pray) and better crit chance (Small Laser Pointer). The sheer over-the-top nature of Demolitionists makes them decent choices for solo players who need more firepower to compensate for lack of allies.
Use The Demolitionist? Added Firepower Always Welcome In Solo Plays, Tough Team Encounters
Area denial and burst damage are the bread and butter of the Demolitionist, making them excellent for solo players who want to take care of enemies quickly, and when playing with other players who need someone to clear mobs. However, despite its damage potential, the Demolitionist can be too "all over the place" for players to fully utilize, especially those who appreciate the tactical finessing The Division 2 allows with its builds. At worst, enemies who do survive their initial barrage are likely too scattered to easily track down. The Demolitionist can easily dominate with explosions, but they may end up being one-trick ponies.
Need more Signature Ammo? Focus on explosive kills with the Grenade Launcher, especially with the China Light (explosive damage), Empress International (skill damage), and Grupo Sombra.
4 Technician
Skill Boosts Perfect For Support And Utility Builds

- Signature Weapon: P-017 Missile Launcher that can hit up to 6 enemies at once
- Skill Variant: Artificer Hive that can improve the skills of allies
- EMP Grenade: Also damage any form of tech in the radius
While more or less a support-oriented Specialization, the Technician of The Division 2 does have the P-017 Missile Launcher with seeking ammo (Guided Missiles) to take down enemies from afar. However, where the Specialization shines the most is Skill support with the Artificer Hive that boosts the efficacy of tech for allies near the Technician's effective space. If they need the extra kick, the Technician can deploy the EMP Grenade to disable enemy tech, giving the team a definitive upper hand, albeit for a short while.
This tree's emphasis on Skills builds is made more evident through the boost to the Artificer Hive's effective AOE (Upgraded Sensor Package) and recovery rate (Liquid Cooling, Enhanced Diagnostics), along with giving armor boosts to friendly Skills (Emergency Paths), uninterruptible Skill usage to allies (Faraday Field), and buff armor while aiming Skills (Technomancy). Should the Technician need to take the fight to the enemy, they can grant damage boosts to Skills (Overclocked CPU), inflict more damage to enemy tech (Dismantling), or enjoy damage boosts to Marksman Rifles (Depleted Rounds), Assault Rifles (E.M.I), and LMGs (Onslaught). The most coveted feature of the Technician is its free Skill Tier, as it gives an immense boost to existing loadouts despite its simple description.
Use The Technician? Maximize Tech Presence With Impressive Utility
The Technician's presence on the battlefield is unmatched in terms of overall utility. The EMP Grenade can be extremely powerful in locations where there are heavy defenses on the part of enemies, while the Artificer Hive repairs and increases the damage of deployed Skills. However, the Technician doesn't offer a lot in terms of damage, making them somewhat difficult to appreciate unless they work with a squad that relies on a lot of deployables.
Always grab the Technician for the +1 Skill Tier, then party up so the Artificer Hive can provide consistent assists. Technicians also have a passive damage bonus against Black Tusk drones and robots.
3 Sharpshooter
Take Care Of Enemies Before Firefights Even Happen

- Signature Weapon: TAC-50 Sniper Rifle with armor-piercing rounds
- Skill Variant: Tactician Drone that marks all hostiles within a specific area
- Flashbang Grenade: Apply Stun and Blind to targets
A shooter isn't complete without a sniper kit, and the Sharpshooter fills this role in The Division 2. Equipped with the TAC-50 Sniper Rifle, Sharpshooters are expected, and even equipped, to take out high-value targets while the rest of the team handles other foes. The Sniper can identify weak points (M5Xi 15x Scope) for easy detonation (.50 BMG Rounds). Combined with the Tactician Drone that highlights hostiles for both the Sharpshooter and their allies, anyone in the player's crosshairs is essentially easy pickings.
Due to the emphasis on range, it's no surprise the Sharpshooter is also boosted with overall better headshot damage (One In The Head). The Specialization also receives fewer criticals in Conflict (Vital Protection), more armor in cover (My Home is My Castle), faster reloads (Deft Hands), and better recoil and stability (Breath Control). Allies even get headshot damage boosts (Sharpshooter Tactical Link) as long as any one of them is closer to an enemy than the Sharpshooter. If, at any point, the Sharpshooter needs to use another weapon, they can boost the damage of Assault Rifles (This Is My Rifle) and Marksman Rifles (Depleted Rounds), and get additional headshot damage (Digital Scope).
Use The Sharpshooter? Safety At A Distance Is Always A Smart Play
The Sharpshooter is the obvious choice for players who want to catch enemies unawares, especially when it can get chaotic dealing with one enemy at a time while everyone else is taking a shot at them. The Tactician Drone trumps any other tool for gathering enemy locations, especially when playing with teams, as highlights are also visible to squadmates. However, there's the obvious risk of drawing enemy attention once they spot the Drone. Not only that, but bonuses go out of the window once the Sharpshooter lets go of their sniper, which means they're locked into long-distance plays.
The Hotshot Gear Seat is easily one of the best options for Sharpshooters, especially when Headache (Talent, Set Bonus 4) gives more damage for each successive headshot. Grab a chest piece with Headhunter to get 125% more damage to the next shot after killing with a headshot.

2 Survivalist
Dominate The Battlezone With Effects

- Signature Weapon: Crossbow with explosive bolts
- Skill Variant: Mender Seeker Mine that releases a cloud that heals the user and repairs the party's Skills
- Incendiary Grenade: Apply Burning to damaged foes
Nothing says healing quite like the Survivalist in The Division 2, although they do need to ensure enemies are taken care of first. They do this through the Explosive-Tipped Crossbow that has a rather lackluster reload but also stuns enemies with a mean cluster explosion (Explosive Bolts) afterward. Survivalists don't even need to pause to heal, as they can just deploy their Mender Seeker Mine to constantly provide armor healing to themselves and members of the squad. Should players manage to balance healing allies with engaging foes, their Survivalist can become the perfect frontline unit.
More specifically, Survivalists can make excellent candidates for a tank-healer build, especially with how the game incentivizes both parts of the equation. The Survivalist can enjoy more potent healing (Triage Specialist), get faster cooldowns in cover (Crunch Time), get less chance of being hit by crits (Vital Protection), and give Mender a more potent healing AOE (Distributed Repair). In combat, Survivalists can burn enemies with an Incendiary Grenade while their allies get more status ailment damage (Survivalist Tactical Link), and get 5-bullet reloads when going from cover to cover (Scraping By).
Use The Survivalist? The Closest Thing The Game Has To An Active Tank-Healer Hybrid
While not the subject of a lot of builds, the Survivalist's skill tree has a lot of components that can enhance existing builds, such as the Artificer Hive and other tools that improve combat coverage. However, pure Survivalists are known for their stellar sustainability and durability, making them excellent for solo play or backing up a more aggressive squad. Players who can accept having limited firepower in exchange for constant heals can definitely make do with a Survivalist focus.
If the Crossbow isn't cutting it, the Survivalist can enjoy better Assault Rifle range (Infantry 5.56 Mag) and damage (E.M.I.), and even hit better with the LMG (Onslaught) and Shotgun (Running the Gun).
1 Gunner
A Sustainable Powerhouse Perfect For Long Fights

- Signature Weapon: Minigun that deals sustained damage with a ridiculous firing rate
- Skill Variant: Banshee Drone that causes Confusion to targets while ignoring cover
- Riot Foam Grenade: Traps affected enemies
Imagine just going Rambo on enemies, and this is exactly the "rewarding recklessness" playstyle that the Gunner embodies. Their M134 Minigun can pepper through enemy lines easily, while their Banshee Drone can confuse foes. To make things easier, the Riot Foam Grenade can trap enemies in place while the player makes a dramatic entrance with their Minigun. The Gunner's arsenal emphasizes targeted mayhem, with the perks surrounding the Minigun encouraging more forward players, as they have enough sustains to keep them in combat or, at least, get them back into combat as fast as they possibly could.
On top of the Minigun already having +50 bullets (Large Bullets), hits themselves have a chance of restoring some of the Gunner's armor (A Good Offence) while kills grant firing rate (Barrage) and armor repair (Incessant) boosts. Bullets barely become a concern for the Gunner, as the Minigun can grant ammo bars as long as they kill enemies without letting go of the trigger (7.62 Minigun Ammo Acquisition). They can even give 50% more reload speed for every third reload (Coupler) of the Minigun, and even provide better handling while stationary (Emplacement).
Use The Gunner? The Most Well-Rounded Among The Specializations
Considered as the "go-to" Specialization to focus on since its release, the Gunner is just the most straightforwardly aggressive Specialization among the pack. The ammo regeneration is of particular focus to most players, as this incentivizes the Gunner getting into - and staying in - the heat of battle. However, the Gunner can get easily stale as there's really no other "oomph" factor to their kit, as even the Minigun's perks only ever work while shooting enemies. The lack of variety can make the Gunner stale quickly, but players who can get past this will have a well-balanced build on their hands.
Don't hesitate to take time in a firefight - eliminate minions first, then the bodyguards, then focus on the boss. Make sure to always move towards cover and closer to the boss as the fight progresses. Even if minions respawn, the Gunner will end up much closer to the boss than minutes earlier.
