May 17 Update Notes: Added Star Wars Outlaws and RDR2 as May 2026's best new games. A hidden gem has also been added.
On June 13, 2022, Sony launched a new and improved PlayStation Plus in North America. Split into three tiers, this model combines the previous version of PS Plus with PS Now; depending on which level someone subscribes to, they will gain access to certain services and games.
- PlayStation Plus Essential ($9.99/month): This tier is the equivalent of the old PS Plus. A subscription includes online access, monthly free games, and discounts.
- PlayStation Plus Extra ($14.99/month): Along with the Essential tier benefits, Extra provides access to hundreds of PS4 and PS5 games.
- PlayStation Plus Premium ($17.99/month): Along with the Essential and Extra tier benefits, Premium includes a library of classic games (PS3, PS2, PSP, and PS1), trials, and cloud streaming in certain regions.
PS Plus has over 700 games covering more than two decades of PlayStation history. Such a huge collection can be overwhelming, and the PS Plus app does not make it very easy to browse through the library; as such, it can be useful to know this tier's highlights before investing in a subscription. Each month, Sony adds a handful of new games, most of which are PS5 releases. Let's take a look at some of the best PS Plus Extra games.
PS Plus Extra: Best New Games (May 2026)
Here is the full May 2026 PS Plus Extra lineup. The games will be available from May 19th.
Red Dead Redemption 2
Rockstar's Open-World Masterpiece
Well, you cannot get much better than arguably the greatest open-world game of all time, or at least a top contender. Now, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a massive deal regardless of the circumstances, but it should be noted that Rockstar's masterpiece was already part of PS Plus Extra, but it left the service in November 2024. That is about 18 months ago, so it is cool to have the game pack. Considering rumors of a GTA 6 reveal have been making the rounds, this arrival would give you something to play while waiting for that game to release. Or, it could be a complete coincidence.
Best Games Set in the Wild West (That Aren't Part of the Red Dead Franchise)
Red Dead Redemption might be iconic, but it's far from the only gun-totin', darn-tootin' wild west gaming IP worth checking out.
What is there left to be said about RDR2? If you have never stepped into this universe, I heavily recommend playing the original Red Dead Redemption, which is also on PS Plus Extra, before jumping into the second entry. Yes, RDR2 is a prequel, but that is irrelevant. Otherwise, this game is for anybody looking for an immersive Western that tells a best-in-gaming story featuring characters you will come to love (or hate). The controls and gameplay can take some getting used to, though.
Star Wars Outlaws
The Ideal PS Plus Game
- ESRB
- T For Teen // Violence, Simulated Gambling, Mild Language
- Developer(s)
- Massive Entertainment
- Genre(s)
- Open-World, Action-Adventure
- Platform(s)
- PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S
Star Wars Outlaws is arguably the perfect PS Plus game. Firstly, it is huge, and I mean that literally and commercially. Featuring trips to multiple planets, Ubisoft's title combines a lengthy campaign with great visuals, a decent story, and pretty good gameplay. Secondly, it is somewhat divisive to the point that some people might have held off purchasing the game due to its mixed reception. Consequently, it is the perfect PS Plus game.
If you aren't that into Star Wars, you might still want to give Outlaws a try, as it can be appreciated as an action-adventure romp that feels like a space western at times. You don't need to be very familiar with the universe to get something out of this game; honestly, a lack of familiarity might improve the experience.
Hidden Gem of May 2026
The Thaumaturge
A Twisted Detective RPG
The Thaumaturge probably won't be moved into the "Best PS Plus Extra Games" section after this month is done, but it is one of the better RPGs on the service. Roughly a year before Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 became the biggest game ever, The Thaumaturge arrived to challenge the status quo of turn-based RPGs, and its 1905 Warsaw setting provides a unique feel and aesthetic.
One-part detective sim, one-part Persona or Pokemon, The Thaumaturge has players use a supernatural perception power to figure out clues to solve a mystery. Meanwhile, when combat is involved, players fight with a Salutor, which are mythological creatures. With an interesting blend of fiction and history, The Thaumaturge is a pretty fantastic AA-style game that has way more positives than negatives. Give this a shot.
Best PS Plus Extra Games
Marvel's Spider-Man 2
The Most Super Game On PS Plus Extra
- Developer(s)
- Insomniac Games
- Genre(s)
- Open-World, Action-Adventure, Superhero
- Platform(s)
- PlayStation 5, PC
Insomniac's full Spider-Man trilogy can be played with a PS Plus Extra subscription, and they combine to provide more than 50 hours of superhero greatness. When it comes to picking the best of the bunch, a strong argument could be made for all three of them; however, there is absolutely no point in doing that when we can just recommend all three games.
Spider-Man has received his fair share of great games over the decades, but Marvel's Spider-Man and its sequels are the most complete packages, delivering fantastic web-swinging, satisfying combat, quality visuals, and mostly decent stories. All three games are set in New York, and they recreate the city pretty darn well. While none of the open-worlds have amazing optional content by the standards of the genre, moving through them is so much fun that they are still a blast.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has the most divisive story in the trilogy, but it also fine-tunes the gameplay to near perfection. You also get to play as Miles and Peter, both of whom have nuances that set them apart from each other.
The Best-Looking PS5 Games, Ranked
The best-looking games on the PlayStation 5 feature remarkable visuals and are a must-play for players who appreciate games with stunning graphics.
Red Dead Redemption
Rockstar's Best Game Is On PS Plus Extra
- Developer(s)
- Rockstar San Diego
- PS5 Release Date
- December 2, 2025
- Genre(s)
- Open-World, Adventure
- Platform(s)
- Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Android, iOS
Red Dead Redemption 2 might overshadow its predecessor to an extent, but make no mistake about it, the original RDR is nothing short of a masterpiece. Rockstar's Western was ported to the PS5 in 2025, and that is the one available on PS Plus Extra. While the changes were minimal, this version is definitely the definitive way to experience John Marston's legendary story, one that holds up pretty darn well. A far leaner journey, Red Dead Redemption is relatively short for the modern open-world genre, with the story lasting maybe 20 hours. Fortunately, Rockstar makes full use of every second, telling a tale that covers two countries, an absurd range of memorable characters, and an honor system that encourages repeat playthroughs.
Personally, Red Dead Redemption is my favorite Rockstar game, and the PS5 release just reinforced that love. John is still one of the most likable but also complex characters in gaming, and the story blends intense shootouts with quiet moments of introspection or dread. Also, RDR is actually fun to play, even if it might not reach the over-the-top insanity of GTA.
Undead Nightmare is also part of the package, and it is one of the greatest expansions ever.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2
A Fresh Bloodbath Unleashed On PS Plus
- Developer(s)
- Saber Interactive
- Genre(s)
- Third-Person Shooter, Hack and Slash
- Platform(s)
- PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S
The biggest new game added to PS Plus Extra in March 2026 was, undoubtedly, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, which has been out for about 18 months by this point. A long-awaited game that sold pretty well and already has a sequel in the works, Saber's project is exactly what you want it to be, for the most part. Blending gory melee combat with visceral third-person shooting, Space Marine 2 lets you step into one of the most powerful fictional forces, and you will get to kill so many Tyranids throughout the short but sweet campaign.
Warhammer 40K: Strongest Space Marine Chapters
Warhammer 40K has featured a number of space marine chapters, but among them, which are the most powerful?
Playable in co-op, the single-player mode will probably be the main reason most people download this game, as I assume anybody interested in the multiplayer has already jumped on board. Although not perfect by any means, Space Marine 2's campaign is a bloody blast that blends great combat with gorgeous visuals and fun set pieces.
Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth
Maybe The Best Turn-Based RPG On PS Plus
- Developer(s)
- Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio
- Genre(s)
- RPG
- Platform(s)
- PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X
I am almost hesitant to recommend Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth. Why? Because it will be the only game you play for a month or maybe even two, and that is only if you average at least 15 hours of gaming per week. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's franchise is known for its lengthy campaigns that combine an incredible main story with an absurd range of optional quests, but Infinite Wealth took things a few steps further. This is, by far, the longest entry in the franchise, one that will dominate your life and become your everything for a while.
Besides quantity, Infinite Wealth also delivers quality. Set in Hawaii and splitting its time between two protagonists, the story builds on Like a Dragon and The Man Who Erased His Name, emphasizing both Kazuma and Ichiban. The latter is the primary focus, but the former gets his moments in the spotlight as well. Honolulu is gorgeous, huge (by Yakuza standards), and densely populated with content, including sub-stories that are regularly incredible. The turn-based combat isn't that unusual for the genre, but it is all-around great.
