The Outlast Trials presents its experienced players with the option to Rebirth, which acts as a unique Trial with variators that could spell disaster for solo players and co-op teams alike. If you're curious what to use your Rebirth Tokens on, or you want to further understand how Solo Rebirth and Communal Rebirth work, then we've got you covered. You can find the complete explanations and guides for the entire Rebirth program in The Outlast Trials below.

Rebirth and Relapse are two different things. While Rebirth is how you unlock one of the endings, a Relapse is how you Prestige. Click the guide above to find out more information regarding Relapses, and continue reading this guide to find out about Rebirths.

How Does Rebirth Work in The Outlast Trials?

Rebirth is a unique way to free your Reagent and unlock one of the endings in The Outlast Trials. It's also a great way to farm XP. You can begin a Rebirth by speaking with the guard opposite the Terminal in the Sleep Room, but only after you have 100 Rebirth Tokens. You will get 5x Rebirth Tokens for an MK Trial, and 10x Rebirth Tokens for an ending Trial. (You can only have 1,000 Rebirth Tokens at once).

Rebirth puts you into a difficult Trial where you will be tested on mechanics and enemies seen in previous Trials. These are the important things to know before you start a Rebirth:

  • You gain 10,000 XP, 100 Stamps, and randomized rare cosmetics if you complete a Rebirth.
  • Your Therapy Level is not reset.
  • Your cosmetics are not reset.
  • Your Rigs, AMPs, and Prescriptions are not reset.
  • If you fail the Rebirth, your Rebirth Tokens will be refunded so you can try an unlimited number of times.
  • You unlock 1 random Newspaper for The Director, with 46 in total (Communal Rebirth only).

Below, we'll share more information regarding the Solo Rebirth and Communal Rebirth experience, including difficulty values, Trials, and more.

Solo Rebirth, Explained

If you are playing as a solo player, you can enter a Solo Rebirth. This will return you to the mansion (from the tutorial) where you will be forced to complete a specific set of objectives to escape. Each successful Rebirth unlocks harder modifiers and enemies:

The Solo Rebirth has the same objectives for the return to the Mansion, where you must See the Words (activate the generator with the gas can and place the film reel) and Hear the Words (activate the three frequency boxes).

Your first Rebirth will feature Grunts in the upper rooms and Big Grunts in the lower areas. From your 2nd Rebirth onwards, there will also be Night Hunters, Screamers, Berserkers, and Pouncers.

From your 2nd Rebirth onwards, a Prime Asset will chase you as you reach the Employees Only exit of the Solo Rebirth Trial.

Communal Rebirth, Explained

The Communal Rebirth is something 1-4 players can do together, and it will place you in a random MK-Challenge Trial with a twist. The Trial is randomized, the perspective is mirrored, and on top of having to complete the primary objective, you must also find and activate three frequency boxes (Hear the Words) and deliver your individual Rebirth records (Who Are You?)

Another important factor to know with a Communal Rebirth is that even if you die and just one of your friends makes it out alive, the game will consider it a success, and it will count as you also succeeding the Trial.

A randomized Trial, a mandatory secondary objective, and a mirrored perspective aren't the most difficult part of a Communal Rebirth. Every Communal Rebirth will have a Classified Variator. This means that a random Variator will be added to the Trial, but the game won't tell you which one it is. Here's a look at the Variators that you could end up facing in your Communal Rebirth:

Variator

Description

Bleeding

Taking damage will cause bleeding.

Use bandages to patch up.

Cold Snap

The Trial environment is sporadically filled with piercing cold air.

Cold Snap activates every 90 seconds and pauses during certain objectives.

Cold Snap is active for 20 seconds.

Deep Burn

The Trial environment is filled with fire.

This adds Fire Mines, Flame Throwers, Hazard Vents, and more Pitchers to the Trial.

This also adds smoke in the air, which causes Stamina to drain faster and recovery speed to decrease.

Health Sickness

Health is restricted, and you need to find special pills to recover it.

Jaeger

The Jaeger Ex-Pop is permanently present in the Trial.

Permafrost

Permanent freezing temperatures in the Trial.

Locate heat sources to stay warm, which consist of burning barrels and hiding spots.

Permanent Damage

Damage is permanent, but you can remove it with special pills.

Partially damaged health bars can be healed.

Prime Roulette

There can now be two Prime Assets present in the Trial at the same time.

Salvage Rigs

You can find single-use Rigs from dead Reagents around the map.

These Rigs will always have upgrades, even if you haven't purchased them.

Surveillance Cameras

Surveillance Cameras have been installed across the Trials.

Detection will result in a painful shock and alert nearby Ex-Pop.

You can destroy Surveillance Cameras with Bricks, Bottles and Rigs.

Toxic Shock

The Trial environment sporadically fills with toxic gas, inflicting permanent damage.

Toxic Shock activates every 90 seconds and remains active for 20 seconds.

Lost Health can only be recovered by being revived or through Health Pills, but you can heal partially damaged health bars with Medicine Bottles and Bandages.

We only recommend doing a Communal Rebirth if you have a team that is familiar with the Trials mentioned above.

This is something you can attempt solo, but it is far more difficult, especially since the Jaeger will spawn and track you down. Remember, even if you fail, your Rebirth Tokens will be refunded, so death isn't the end.
