While originally expected to release at the tail end of September 2026, Onimusha: Way of the Sword may have just pushed up its release date if recent retail listings are to be believed. Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the return of Capcom's 20-year-old classic hack-and-slash franchise, and it might just be getting ahead of a crazy fall release schedule to get its time in the sun.
Fall of 2026 is about to be one of the busiest seasons for gaming in recent memory. Following Summer Games Fest 2026, it appears that just about every game is planning its launch for September to get ahead of the GTA 6 release happening in November, because no one really wants to compete with the most anticipated game of all time. This September, The Blood of Dawnwalker launches on September 3, Marvel's Wolverine launches on September 15, and then the month ends with Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Control: Resonant, and Silent Hill: Townfall on September 25. However, things might be changing for Onimusha soon.

As spotted by CAG on BlueSky, it seems like Canadian Retailer PNP Games has moved Onimusha: Way of the Sword's release date from September 25, 2026, to September 4 with seemingly no explanation. Other retailers like Best Buy, VGP, and GameStop still have Onimusha slated for a September 25 release, so it could be that PNP is ahead of everyone else, or that it was simply done in error. PNP's listing has been up for two days at the time of writing, and it still hasn't changed the release date back to September 25. As of now, Capcom has not made any official announcement regarding Way of the Sword's release date, but that doesn't mean Capcom hasn't shifted release dates to avoid clashing with major releases before.
Just this year, Capcom moved Pragmata up from April 24 to April 17, presumably so that it wouldn't compete with PlayStation's Saros at that time, but this would be a much more substantial jump, and for good reason. From mid to late September, there are some real heavy hitters in the gaming space launching, specifically Marvel's Wolverine and Control: Resonant, which seem poised to do well given fan response following Summer Game Fest. Launching in early September only puts Onimusha: Way of the Sword up against The Blood of Dawnwalker, which is a more favorable market position than going up against two massive games from established franchises.

Additionally, moving Onimusha up would give some breathing room for Capcom's other upcoming projects, such as Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, which launches on October 9. However, it is worth stressing that Capcom has not yet made any comment about Way of the Sword's release date. So far, the game is still locked in for a September 25 release date, and the PNP Games listing remains an outlier with current retail listings.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword could likely change its release date, but so could plenty of other games as well. Rockstar Games more or less just locked in Grand Theft Auto 6's release date after confirming pre-orders open on June 25, which means that anyone calling Rockstar's bluff might be changing their release dates soon. Perhaps the only company willing to go head-to-head with GTA 6 this November is Nintendo with the Ocarina of Time remake, so it will be interesting to see if that ends up being the case as the year goes on.
