During the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja revealed Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember, the upcoming sequel to the underrated Soulslike Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Released in 2023, Fallen Dynasty is a hack-and-slash action RPG set in second-century China during the Yellow Turban Rebellion. Now fans of the first game will be able to jump back into the war-torn Three Kingdoms era with Wo Long 2.
When it launched in 2023, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty received generally positive reviews across the board, though some players did call out its initial poor performance on PC. The game's enemy and boss design was praised, however, as was the music. Fans were mixed on the linear level design, with some appreciating its similarity to Nioh, another Team Ninja-developed title, while others wished for more open exploration. And Fallen Dynasty's gameplay was praised overall, by critics and players alike. Despite this, the gameplay fell under the radar for many Soulslike fans, perhaps distracted by other titles in the genre that released the same year.

Like its predecessor, Wings of Ember takes place during the late Eastern Han period of China, in the late second century. The land is filled with strife as warlords battle for supremacy, but "a phoenix rose from the fires of war as a nameless champion." As such, players will strive to learn Chinese martial arts and use their skills to defeat powerful enemies, human and demons alike. The game is of course still in development, but the Xbox Games Showcase trailer has provided a glimpse at the excitement and intense gameplay that awaits.
In the meantime, the first game will be once again joining Xbox Game Pass so that fans and newcomers alike can acquaint themselves with the story and setting. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty takes about 25 to 35 hours to beat, depending on whether one focuses on the main story or wanders a bit from the beaten path. Completionists will clock in closer to 50 hours, but since the sequel won't be out until sometime in 2027, even thorough gamers should have enough time to wring every bit of gameplay out of Fallen Dynasty.
The June Xbox Games Showcase was packed with game trailers and announcements, and Xbox Game Pass subscribers undoubtedly came out on top, with 17 titles revealed to be coming to the service. In fact, only a smattering will not be making their way to the service, such as the highly anticipated Metro 2039, which is currently scheduled to launch in February 2027. And there are plenty of games to look forward to in the coming year, including Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, Minecraft Dungeons 2, One More Level's action RPG Valor Mortis, and of course Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember.
